Date: March 09, 2008 03:12AM I saw the recent post about opening a coconut and wanted to share my method. Starting a new post seemed most efficient.
This is how to open a coconut without losing a drop of the precious water and without using/swinging a sharp knife Required items: - Hand strength - Plastic knife (or lots of hand strength, strong nails and patience) 1) JoJo & a fresh young coconut, flat side down. 2) Score the coconut, using a plastic knife, starting from the flat side. 3) Score it like a pie (or whatever works for you) 4) Start to peel it. Getting it started is the hardest part - it helps to have nails and strong hands. 5) Peeling it. 6) Mostly peeled 7) Peeled - I left the husk on for reference, but usually I take it all off. 8) Find the soft "belly button" and it will cut right out. It is on the side that was flat. 9) "Belly button" open, and not a drop lost. 10) Invert over a large glass. 11) Drain into glass. Liquid gold. 12) I usually use a hammer or something hard to open the husk after I drain the water. 13) MMmmmm. Liquid heaven....you deserve it! 14) Peace, my friends. Date: March 09, 2008 01:14PM Thanks for the laugh, Spanish. JoJo has many talents,....but, as an obligate carnivore, he doesn't bother with the coconuts. [www.oneillpaul.com-a.googlepages.com] Re: How to open a coconut.

Maybe the leftover coconut would make a good compost after. Re: How to open a coconut.

Date: January 15, 2012 02:51PM I haven't seen this way of doing it before. Gonna give it a try, because I stopped buying young coconuts because of the waste cost factor. Alas, the husk typically cannot be composted safely, because it's coated with anti-fungals for import Re: How to open a coconut.
