Date: March 10, 2008 11:37PM I tried these for the first time today. They're notorious for their bitter taste (hence the name). Once I sliced them open (I had 3, they're quite small) it just seemed like a cavity with a tiny amount of pith-like flesh and lots of large seeds. Didn't taste even remotely bitter! Did I have a bad one, or are my taste buds shot? LOL Re: Chinese Bitter Melon (aka Karela)

My wife eats them about 3 times a week but cooked and the leaves from the plant also. They grow in Florida all over the place but they are the orange ones they are like a weed when I was growing up there. I have never tried them but they are called bitter gourd or balsam pear. you must have got a really ripe one. I prefer chayotes over them they are more juicy. Lke Cherimoya I also like chayotes. I will try the bitter gourd raw though, I am curious. Re: Chinese Bitter Melon (aka Karela)

Glad to see my taste buds haven't just gone barmy! :-) I might get some again, just in case the first ones I had weren't a one-off! I really like how they look. Kind of like some kind of alien vegetable Re: Chinese Bitter Melon (aka Karela)
