Do you eat flowers?
Posted by: rawnoggin ()

Does anyone here eat flowers, and if so, which ones?

Is there a list of flowers that are edible? Nutritional content?

Also, is it considered fruitarian to eat flowers? smiling smiley

Thanks! smiling smiley

Most flowers are edible (although I'm sure they vary in tastiness!) smiling smiley I personally don't eat them because I find them less sustaining than fruit (almost no calories).....and it's more probable that I'd get a hold of bugs! LOL.

Yes, I love flowers! Lots are edible, some of my favourite are wild garlic (wild leek) flowers, they are garlicky and sweet at the same time.

We've got an article on edible flowers coming up in the next issue of Funky Raw magazine too.

I've used them as a garnish only. Never just to eat or snack on.

Oh, and to answer your other question: I don't personally regard it as fruitarian to eat flowers or nuts...which are 'potential' plants. This is just my personal opinion and practice, and NOT some kind of empirical 'fruitarian' standard. smiling smiley

You know when I first learned that dandelions were edible I tried to grow some in a pot, and failed miserably. How pathetic is that?

Can I go and pick dandelions from the lawn and eat them? Wash them first?

I'd love to TRY eating flowers.

Maybe they have some useful phytonutrients? =)

I grew some nasturtiums last summer and nearly fell of the porch diveing for the first flower. I shook all the bugs out before eating it. It was very sweet and vewry spicy. I would like it in mix of things because it is very strong in flavor. I ate a pansy and it was very lite and somewhat sweet I heard the pollen in the flowers are very nutritious I think it is the same thing people sell as bee pollen.

They're supposed to be best before the flowers actually bloom. Afterwards they are very bitter. But, I say that knowing that some people here are pretty hardcore about their greens, and that might not stop them. smiling smiley

Supposedly the whole part is supposed to be edible, the leaves, the flower, even the root. I heard you can even make something coffee-like by grinding up the root and running water through it, or maybe boiling. Obviously that wouldn't be raw, but one of these days I will be brave enough to try that.

BTW, interesting fact, unless I'm remembering wrong smiling smiley Dandelions aren't native to the US. They were brought here for use as food.

Of course. Although dandelion flowers are maybe not the best choice for your first flowers, they are quite bitter. Some flowers are so delicate and sweet. Lime flowers (tilia, not citrus) are delicious, a great starting point, but they will not be out for a little while yet, May/June I think.

I use flowers all of the time in my salads. They are delicious. I don't just chow down on them plain though.

ooh, i just remembered a story!

once my boyfriend (at the time) showed our neighbours kids that you can eat pansies. well, their mom brought home some flats of them for the garden not too long after that and left them on the back porch until she could get to planting them. you know what happened, right? she came back out about a half hour later and her youngest (maybe 3 or 4 at the time) had eaten every single blossom. ha ha, hysterical!

When we were posting all our meals on the seven week raw challenge Suncloud posted eating a hibiscus flower everyday.

I bought a hibiscus plant but my horses ate it down to little stubs. They also ate my lantana, azaleas and a little of the roses. I guess the thorns saved the rose bushes. I used to have a horse that would pull my plants off the porch and eat them. I am going to put a little fence around my hibiscus this year and hopefully keep them away.
