Green Smoothie High
Posted by: Wheatgrass Yogi ()
Date: September 21, 2008 02:25PM

Yesterday, I decided to drive the 30 miles each way
to Tampa and get some fresh, Organic Greens. I got
Collards, Parsley, and 3 kinds of Kale (Curly, Tuscan,
and Lacinato). Naturally a cooler was called for, which
I had bought the day before at Wal-Mart.
As I sit here having a Green Smoothie, I'm thinking
it was worth the trip.
Does anyone here have a Favorite Green that you use in
your diet?......WY

I love spinach cause I have a crappy blender and baby spinach blends the best (so, naturally, I use a lot more of it.) But kale (curly kale-I have not tried other kinds) is my absolute favorite just because it makes me feel so much healthier and alive after a few days!

I've been having Green Smoothies for about a week now,
made with Fresh Greens. I had been using Sea Vegetables
from the Maine Coast, and still use some in every smoothie.
My favorite Green so far is Curly Kale, but I do like the
dark green color (and taste) of the other Kale too. Parsley
is good in smoothies, giving them a little 'bite'. Collard
Greens are a little too 'strong' for my tastes.
Enjoy your Green Smoothies. Having a powerful blender is 'Top
Priority'.......WY
P.S. It's fun reading what Greens people here like. I've never
heard of Nopales, and haven't used Spinach, although I have a
friend who uses some in every 'Blended Salad'. She doesn't call
them Smoothies because they're only loosely blended.

I just got some kurley kale given to me fresh from a local garden. I love kale just as much a spinach. I sometimes put a little wild nettles in the smoothie, that really gets me going.

If you use a lot of Kale, it'll give you a Green Smoothie
High. That tells you you're using too much. I'm cutting back.
Kale has been classified as a flowering Green. I'd like to try
Dandelion Greens. Can one buy them, or do you have to grow
your own?.......WY

I used a lot of Kale and Parsley, so
that combo may have done it. I used less and didn't
get the same 'buzz' from my next one.....WY

that's why people run.. to get a runner's high
that's why people play certain music... to get a musical high

if you get a high from kale

why would you cut back?

maybe u know something i don't know

if i was feeling good i would keep doing whatever was causing me to feel good

not cut back ( given that there were no bad repurcussions)

what is the contraindication of kale's chlorophyll mineral content?

curious

enlighten me

i need it

You have a good Point there La_V. I've been pondering
it all day. From a philosophical point-of-view, the 'Key' is not in
the highs of Food, Sex, Drugs, Exercise, or Etcetera. That doesn't
mean they aren't useful, but as Alan Watts said...."When you get an
answer, hang up the phone".....WY

My Green Smoothies are quite complicated.
I'm using 10 (sometimes more) ingredients and can't leave
out any of my 'favorites', especially Curly Kale.....WY

I'm in a 'groove' now. In every smoothie, I use.....

1. Dulse
2. Sea Lettuce
3. Italian Parsley
4. Curly Kale
5. Broccoli
6. Hunza Apricots
7. Turkish Figs
8. Carrot
9. Sweet Pepper
10. Tomato
11. Celery
12. Water

I've created a Monster, and will soon reevaluate my mix......WY

I can only get a few varieties of organic leafy greens where I live, and I prefer to not use conventionally grown, so my choice is pretty limited. Generally I alternate between kale and spinach in my smoothies. Sometimes I add in a bit of arugula too smiling smiley

I'm out of Parsley and Kale, so tomorrow I'll
make a 'run' to Tampa to stock up. I'll probably get some
Collard Greens too. I just read that a single collard plant
can grow 4' high and 5' wide. Any plant that grows like that
just has to be good for the human body. I bet Collards will
keep a long time in the refrigerator. They just look 'strong'.
Many of you like Spinach. It never appealed to me because
it's so perishable. Every time I went to use some in the past,
it had wilted. I wasn't storing it right.

Yes, VF, I'm trying to cut down on the size of my Green Smoothies......WY

Hi WY,

This year the farm that where I have a CSA share did an experiment with the collard greens. They tried planting them further apart to see how they would do. They brought these amazingly huge collard leaves to the market that looked like you could fashion them into small boats. They said that they hadn't done anything different apart from increasing the spacing. I should have taken a photo.

Yes, Frances, that's very interesting.
I got back from Tampa today with a bunch of Collard Greens
and Italian Parsley, and two bunches of Curly Kale. Those
Collard leaves are pretty big so I'll probably start off
with half a leaf per smoothie, and adjust from there.
I've decided to eliminate Broccoli from my mix, and cut down
on the Fruit, Carrot, and Celery. I plan to 'tweak' the mixture
until it's just right......WY

So, I have started doing the green juice thing... I didn't know what I was missing! I heart smoothies... don't get me wrong. But juicing some kale, lemon, apple, and ginger (green lemonade recipe?) is a fabulous start to the morning! I don't feel hungry after drinking it until about 5 hours afterward. And I don't know if "fabulous" = "high" but I definitely look forward to my morning fix... winking smiley

Juicing in the morning is a good habit to get
into. I juice Wheatgrass every morning, and am trying to
work in a Celery juicing during the day....but Green Smoothies
are still my favorite thing......WY

I've been finding that since I started green smoothies, I have been wanting progressively less and less fruit (sugar) in the drink. It is getting to the point where I won't put anymore fruit than is absolutely necessary, ie, just the stuff I want for the good nutrients they have in them, like berries and so forth. I am pretty happy about this, as I think it's a good indication that my body is starting to crave healthier and healthier foods smiling smiley

I'm going to start Wheatgrass soon as well. I just need to find some growing trays. Can't wait to rise to shots of fresh wheatgrass juice everymorning tongue sticking out smiley
