Is there an alternative to shoyu?
Posted by: Anonymous User ()

I am allergic to soy so I can't use shoyu in recipes. I have just purchased a few Raw cookbooks and most recipes call for Namba Shoyu. Can anyone suggest a good substitute? Thanks.

I use the soak water from seaweed (specifically sea spaghetti, but I'm sure others will work).

Or of course you can just leave it out, adding a bit of water if necessary to get the consistency you want and salt if you desire.

Use sea salt. The soy flavor won't be there but the saltiness will. Also soy is bad for the body.

Whatever you do, avoid Brags liquid seasoning. I just learned to get over the salt cravings. Our bodies require a surprisingly small amount of sodium to function properly, even very active people. Celery is a good natural source of sodium.
