Is this mold in my wheat grass?

Date: March 11, 2010 02:55PM I just bought a tray of wheat grass from the farmers market no less than 24 hours ago. I didn't think to inspect it too closely because the growers are suppose to be reputable. When I got home, I noticed this (you might not be able to tell anything from the third one)

Date: March 11, 2010 04:08PM You got some pretty nice photos there, but it's still hard for me to tell from the photos. Hopefully you'll get more responses from others who are more experienced with wheatgrass. It looks to me like it might be the normal feathery root feelers. Here's a photo I took years ago of the root feelers on some young radish sprouts:
edit: The photo was a little too big, so here's a smaller version. Click for the big version. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/11/2010 04:11PM by frances. Re: Is this mold in my wheat grass?

Date: March 12, 2010 01:15PM Not being there it's hard to tell, but being a grower, looks like this batch got a little over watered, yes, I think it's mold. Talk to who you bought it from. Re: Is this mold in my wheat grass?

Date: March 14, 2010 05:37AM I would say it's Mold, and a bad case at that. The Wheatgrass
is a nice dark-green, so it may be alright. Juice some, avoiding the mold. If it has a bitter taste....toss it. If it's sweet, or mild tasting, I'd say drink it.....WY Re: Is this mold in my wheat grass?

Date: March 14, 2010 05:57AM I've been thinking about this. I've changed
my mind to 'toss it'. Don't take a chance when in doubt....WY Re: Is this mold in my wheat grass?

Date: March 22, 2010 05:17AM Hmm... well I grow and consume wheatgrass. That does look like mold, but in my experience there is no problem with the grass. I just drink it as usual. I have found that the difference between bitter/nauseus and sweet has to do with the age at harvest, not the mold.
I believe that if you want to avoid mold then you need air flow. It is when the seed is wet and there is no air movement that the seed molds. Re: Is this mold in my wheat grass?

My Wheatgrass Juice has been bitter lately, so I'm going to go back to blending a Carrot in my fertilizer mix. I've had sweet juice in the past doing that.....WY Re: Is this mold in my wheat grass?

Date: March 25, 2010 07:49PM WY.. if you want sweet grass, just harvest it at a younger stage. I am typing this with a mouth full of real sweet stuff, and all I did was cut it when it was still only about 3 inches high Re: Is this mold in my wheat grass?

I've grown tall, sweet Wheatgrass in the past. I think it's a combination of things. My favorite Seed is no longer available, and I've been using a Kelp 'Soluble Seaweed Extract', which (I think) is making the grass bitter. A little 'Tweaking' is called for.....WY Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
