clogged ear

I have had a clogged ear for the past week and a half. At first I thought it was water because I submerged my head in a hot tub & in a bath recently. I did many home remedies for water & for wax and none of them worked. I went to the ER yesterday and the doctor said I have water behind my ear drum. He said I should take Sudafed & Claritin or Benadryl. I believe the ingredient that I need is an antihistamine. I started taking the medicine last night & my ear seems to be slightly better. I was planning to start a juice fast yesterday, but it is probably not a good idea to start a fast while on medication. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Happy New Year!!

I just found this website with natural antihistamines.
I wish I would have looked before I bought Sudafed & Claritin!

I read about putting the garlic oil from a garlic perle in your ear at night to kill infections and bacteria. I've been wanting to try it, but I'm creeped out at the thought of putting something liquid in my ear.

Is it trapped water mixed with wax? Get some hydrogen peroxide from the store and put into an eyedropper. Works like a charm. You may have to do it several times in each ear. I have found that sometimes wax is hardened and blocks things up. It's so much cheaper than that stuff they sell specifically for wax removal!

Don't screw around with your ear, do as the doctor says and take lots of green juices to detox during and after, cilantro, kale, parsley etc. You're ear drum is very delicate, take extreme care.

It's a partial disability, hearing loss, in the mean time as well, besides distracting and annoying to have a blocked up ear. "Water behind the ear drum" sounds like a doctor's best guess... "fluid" might have been more in keeping with medical jargon.

My ear infection some years back was so debilitating and so poorly diagnosed I got a second opinion and was glad I did.

Was there a written diagnosis?

He may have said 'fluid"
I will check the papers I got to see if he wrote a diagnosis.
thanks

This Sudafed makes me feel cracked out!! My heart is beating super fast & I feel really thirsty.

jeni,

What exactly does fluid behind the eardrum mean? I don't know what you would need antihistamines for. Take the medicine, drink lots of green juice as mama coco advises, but get a strict diagnosis from the medico so you can deduce how this happened and keep it from happening again. Hope you are better soon.

The ear drum forms a tight seal, so I gather that if there's fluid back there it would normally drain down the eustachian tube and ultimately to your throat --

An infection or allergy/mucus might restrict drainage?

When I put my head under water I have trouble when inverted. Water rushes into my sinuses which causes discomfort and then takes a while to feel right again. I have to be careful even tilting my head back into water for a moment to straighten my hair, to exhale a bit to keep the water from rushing up my sinuses. Ha, maybe I'm just weird.

Happy New Year to you all too, btw.

It looks like the eustachian tube goes directly to the throat without any connection to the sinuses so I don't know how one would get water up into the middle ear... A sinus issue can put pressure on the tube though?

loeve,

That's why I am asking; it sounds like jeni's doctor is guessing. Which is troubling.

Fluid behind the eardrum is a legitimate diagnosis.

Doctors can have a bad day. If one diagnosed "water" behind the eardrum without noting a punctured eardrum as the cause then I'd go to someone a little more knowledgable like an ear, nose and throat specialist.

I eventually went to see my general practitioner who told me my ear canals were dirty. I had no idea they were. She also raised an eyebrow that I tollerated the infection for so long "without pills".
