Just make sure the culture is not grown in milk. Many of the starter kits I have found have 'traces' of milk...

suncloud- thanks for the advice. I know that I feel so much better when I am fasting, but I always feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. Also, good advice about stuff to avoid. I mean, following a strict raw diet anyway would exclude most of those things, but it's always good to be reminded. (Particularly about the nuts and grains part, which is where I tend to fall short. You could also

Is there a way to help eliminate the free-circulating toxins faster so that we can minimize the fatigue and stuff? I've fasted for a week before (when I wasn't raw) and while I was tired and freezing cold all the time, nothing serious happened. But I wish I had the knowledge I have now back then. And knowing some gentle ways to compensate for the increased toxin load (more baths? skin brushing

Way before I even knew what the raw food diet was, I poured non-fat soymilk over top of a fruit salad (grapes, cantalope, and honeydew.) It was amazing, but since I don't drink soy anymore, I'd say that banana milk (nut milks have a little too much fat for me in the mornings) would take it to a whole new level of AWESOME!

Thanks Richard. This was a great post. I always prefer asking questions to making judgements because what works for me may not work for someone else. But, c'est la vie. Also, I loved the quote Lee. Very appropriate.

I was thinking today about the argument that we should eat the most similar to animals like us (i.e., chimpanzees, because their DNA is like 95% similar to ours.) I am completely cool with this, but I can't help wondering... we are evolving to have much less hair, appendages we don't need (our wisdom teeth, appendix, and I'm sure a few other things), we hae machines that do everything for us and

So, I am on this medication which I cannot get off and one of the side effects is a mild electrolyte imbalance. The result is that I am constantly craving salt (like, I get irritable if I don't get it). Is there anything a person can eat/drink that will help restore electrolyte (sodium, potassium, calcium) balance? I really cannot stop taking medicine, so that's not really an option for me. I

I completely agree with Rustic. When I was following the low fat 80/10/10 (I admit, I fell off the wagon a bit during December) I felt the best in my life. My skin was clear, I was losing weight, I had so much energy, and slept better than ever. I've found that even when I tried 'snacking' on pistachios or other nuts at parties, they're just not as appealing as they used to be--same with other

So, I am really trying to follow the 80/10/10 diet closely, but I am so sick of bananas I never want to see another banana again! Are there any raw alternatives to bananas that are as filling/calorie-dense as bananas but aren't as sweet? (Something like potatoes-if only they could be eaten raw...)

I got a box of persimmons from a global mart near my house and only one or two of them were ripe. I've been keeping them on the floor, somewhat close to the heater vent (not enough to make them warm, but warmer than the rest of the house), and I also put a thick towel over them so they are dark and warm. They're ripening a little faster, but still incredibly slow for some reason. (Maybe we cou

My perfect smoothie: 1 head of romaine lettuce and 2 bananas. Romaine is one of the least bitter greens out there, so really it ends up just tasting like a banana shake. Yay!

When they are ripe to the point of practically falling apart in your hands, they're an EXCELLENT dessert! Persimmons for Thanksgiving. Yay!

iLive- you're right. I know I don't get enough calories because I almost NEVER get above 2000 (usually anywhere between 1400-1700) but I never feel hungry either so maybe that's what my intake is supposed to be. I'm not particularly active... And I didn't mean to seem as if I was 'glorifying' the diet. I think the low-fat element of it makes sense intuitively and in practice, and I think

Alright, now I feel incredibly dumb. I was trying to figure out how, at 1118 calories consumed (38 of them being from fat) that it would be 21%... then it hit me. I had already plugged into the nutridiary my expected intake goals (no more than 10% from fat, which would have put me around 112 calories, by that point in the day, from fat.) The 21% was not coming from my TOTAL calories, but from

So, without debating the virtues of the author himself, I just want to say that I finished reading the 80/10/10 diet book and thought it was pretty good. I'm still open-minded and questioning lots about raw veganism in general, but having just finished my first week of following 811, my skin is noticeably clearer (something significant for someone like me with horrible acne), I have bounds more

I definitely had. I had severe respiratory allergies growing up and for the first time in my life, a few weeks ago, I was lying in bed and actually able to appreciate breathing clearly as I slept.

I just had a fuyu persimmon today for the first time... it was AMAZING. It was perfectly ripe, incredibly sweet, and surprisingly satiating. How did I not know about persimmons sooner?!? (I feel like the loser in school who's last to know everything!) But seriously, if you've never tried one... do it! I certainly savored all $1.99 of mine.

I just bought the 80/10/10 book and started reading it a few nights ago. I understand what is being said about his 'personality' (to be fair) coming through in his argument for the raw vegan lifestyle. But I do feel attracted to the menu plan that he outlined. I just started today, and vowed to give it a month of following his menus to a t. I reasonably expect to experience icky detox symptom

Java Green seems pretty good... if you can figure out the hours. It's address is 1020 19th street. My friend and I have tried to go twice and both times had to walk away since the restaurant was 'open' but 'not serving food. (I'll never figure that out.) While they have a cool menu, I think you'd have to go between 12 and 6 to actually experience any of it. Sage is apparently good too, and i

I just got the book in mail today and I'm so excited (yay!) Do I sleep, or do I read? Such choices! Anyway, I feel like I've made so many mistakes trying to go raw that I'm grateful to have some 'guidance'. I understand that it's not for everyone, but even if we go our own paths, it's still good to look at a map sometimes.

Wow... I wish I'd read this post earlier. When I first learned of sprouting beans/grains, I got so excited I tried to sprout everything in my house. (Somehow, my understanding of the scientific method has not evolved much since kindergarten!) I think I ended up sprouting black beans, green lentils, kidney beans, quinoa, and something else. I was extra excited my first day of work eating what

So, I have started doing the green juice thing... I didn't know what I was missing! I heart smoothies... don't get me wrong. But juicing some kale, lemon, apple, and ginger (green lemonade recipe?) is a fabulous start to the morning! I don't feel hungry after drinking it until about 5 hours afterward. And I don't know if "fabulous" = "high" but I definitely look forward to

So, it seems like you and I were going through the same thing on Friday. Great! (Except I think I gave myself food poisoning... this actually happens about once a month...) I made a batch of kombucha this week following a youtube video (that might have been my first mistake?) anyway, I let it sit and cultivate for just over a week (closer to two?) Thursday I drank some and it tasted GREAT! I h

WY- thank you for being the Voice of Reason for the group. Unfortunately, I am to poor for a Vitamix/prep blender and realize how crappy my blenders are. BUT, the plus side of this is that after several tasty (though lumpy!) green smoothies, I decided to focus a little more on my juicing skills. I bought a Jack LaLane (sp?) juicer (I'm sure there are better ones, but this was an 'investment' f

I haven't suffered from seasonal depression, but I have battled with (general) depression for the past ten years... I would offer that since being raw, I have a lot more energy, which translates into a much more positive outlook on life for me. Exercise is also great for boosting endorphins. This will be my first winter raw... I'm hoping between the juiced ginger to stay warm and the kale to ke

Fat withdrawal?!? Yes, it seems that I am experiencing a similar feeling of 'lack' since I decided to cut out nuts and nut butters from my diet that I felt when I cut cooked bread/rice out. Even thought it was vegan/gluten-free bread, for about 3 days I was feeling weirded out by just eating fruits and veggies. I feel the same with not eating as much fat... but I'll get past it. Mostly, I was

Not sure how much I can offer by way of pregnancy advice, but I think it's a time to celebrate your own body and the new one it has created. Don't consider eating a chore or no, you really won't feel 'full.' When losing weight we try to eat more volumnous (I know that's spelled wrong) foods that have a lot of water. Maybe you could try more fatty, sweet indulgent foods, like maybe go to TWO av
