Wow! The stuff people will put in their mouths. I was thinking that Texan cuisine was disgusting till you shared the Sardinian larva lunch, Panchito. I often wonder how we (humankind) got from a natural diet of fresh fruits and vegetables to the garbage we ingest now. And it's universal!! Unless I don't know something, all human societies cook some of their food. Am I wrong about that?

Mislu, we mentioned the price of dragonfruit. I bought one yesterday for $2.50! That is the cheapest I have ever seen them priced. Woohoo! Banana who, that question of eating papaya seeds - I watched Aris Latham on You Tube and he eats them too. I've never tried to post a link here but I'll do it, not so much to see him eat papaya seeds but just to enjoy his enthusiasm for raw food. An

Banana who, it's true - the seeds in so many fruits are every bit as prevalent. In part, it's the flavour too because I'm not nuts about it either. Yes, I have had fresh figs. I have tried them growing wild in northern California and my mother's family are Italians. Fig trees are one of their prize possessions in their yards. I grew up being strongly encouraged to eat them and for as much as

I wish I liked them. Try as I may, I just can't seem to get use to the flavour and the seeds. And they're sooooooooooooooo good for you. But those seeds! I guess I will just keep trying and see if I can acquire the taste.

Well, I found a dragonfruit for a mere $5 so I bought it and what a treat but how do I describe the taste? It isn't especially sweet, has a certain mellow flavour to it and has a magnetic quality about it that pulls me back in for the next bite! I don't even know to what I could compare the texture. Lots of seeds and usually, that turns me off but not in this case. Hmmmm. Perhaps I am delu

Hey Eaglefly, I'm sorry to hear you are quitting this forum though there is not doubt that on a public board, there will be some people who have a way of getting under our skin - sometimes it may be justified, sometimes maybe not so much. I know I have personally had moments when I had to pull myself back in because I was about to say some things that never needed to be said. As for the end

Thanks Wander RA. That is very, very nice!!! I love radishes but this takes it to the next level - delightful and pleasantly warm. I thought maybe I'd try six ounces or so and have the rest later - not! It made about 18 oz. and I drank it all in one shot. I loved it! Whoo hoo! I feel empowered!!

Hello Everyone, I find this an interesting discussion. I certainly have seen all of the examples you cited and I once went to a lecture by someone who writes raw food books and I was a bit surprised at how corpulent they were, not that they were fat but certainly heftier than anyone I had ever met who was 100% raw. It made me wonder. Kudos to Dean Pomerleau for putting his pics out there an

Actually, banana who, some years ago, I listened to a lecture by Dr. Hans Diehl, an advocate of a vegan diet who had worked with Nathan Pritikin for some time in Santa Barbara, CA and he said calcium, not dairy, however I have no idea where he got this from. It was just a passing comment that caught my attention. powerlifer, on most days I am as close to 100% raw as I can be. About the only th

Since chat introduced us to cronometer.com I've been keeping track of what I eat each day. On all days, I get between 25% - 50% of the recommended daily allowance, no more. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I once heard that those countries with the greatest prevalence of osteoporosis are also the countries that consume the greatest amounts of calcium.

That's some pretty clean thinking la_veronique! Very nice. About two weeks ago, one person I work with, when she heard I don't eat meat, said she could never live without eating meat and then asked me why I don't and so I told her the basics. She came to work last week and said she hasn't eaten any meat since we talked. She said she feels so much better and no longer has that heavy feeli

Well, I thought I'd buy some dragonfruit but they had seen better days so I'll just have to wait till a new batch comes in. As for papaya seeds, my wife grew up with papayas and she eats the seeds and thinks I'm a wimp because I don't care for them. I tried but they're a little too peppery for my taste. She also grew up eating mangoes complete with the skins but my throat doesn't handle that

Wow Mislu, $14? And I thought $5 was a lot. Well, this discussion has spurred me to have a go at another dragonfruit. Why not? I really enjoy the subtle flavour. They are quite available around here; I think it's because we have a fairly significant asian population. Yep! I'm in. Today's the day for a treat.

Thanks banana who for posting this. I certainly learned a few things I just didn't know like green grapes and strawberries can whiten your teeth. Who knew? I was suprised that mangosteens weren't there but they maybe don't qualify though the flavour alone should make them food for the soul! I thought goji berries might be there too, but alas, not so. I hope you find a dragonfruit, banana w

Perhaps "waning" philosophically is better than waxing philosphically but "waxing" is what I meant to say...maybe a freudian slip!

Panchito, I think I understand what you mean. I have done an occasional speech fast for an entire day and I say nothing all day but will write something down for someone if they really feel too weirded out with me being silent. The thing that always occurs to me during those fasts is how I think I have something to contribute to the conversations around me but since I'm not talking, things go alo

I'm sure you don't change anyone Panchito. No one changes anyone. It's not possible. People change themselves if they want to. Is anyone familiar with Howard Lyman, that Montana beef farmer who became a vegetarian? I once heard him speak and he said he was the least likely candidate to become a vegetarian. Sometimes the harder they argue, the more interested they are. You never know, but to

Thanks chat. I think it's good for me to see myself as Raw4ever. As those of us who do it well know, it's a lifestyle, not a diet. For me, there is nothing better, As for eating a bit of cooked food in certain situations, I've been able to find enough that I haven't needed to but in my reading last week, I really liked a thought made by Carol Alt who essentially said, if you eat some cooked fo

I call myself a radical vegetarian. When asked why I am,my answer goes something like this..."you probably don't want to know!!" Then I proceed by telling of a time when I was in a restaurant in Montreal and a friend said to me, "I use to work at the butchery next door." I asked him if he was a vegetarian and he said, "no, but I should be for what I've seen".

To me, onions, garlic and all their relatives stink! Quite frankly, I don't mind the taste as much as the smell and I certainly can believe they are an effective antibiotic. What could survive their assault? In part, the reason I don't eat them is because I don't like the way they smell on the breath of others and so I deduce that they likely give me something less than "pleasant" b

Raw crackers? Where do you buy them chat? I once found a raw product called Flax Crax but have never seen it again. I can't find any raw crackers anywhere. I've looked at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods...maybe I'm missing them.
