Here are a couple of recipes I plan to try. I got one (as well as the raw oatmeal) from Alissa Cohen's website, and I don't remember where I got the other one. But it was posted online. I think oatmeal can be raw if it isn't heated during the rolling/milling process. Whether or not it's an optimal food for us is another story. However, I don't plan to make these cookies a steady part of my

Really? I like them. I can't eat a whole one though... it's has a rich chocolate taste that's not sweet enough to binge on. However, I'm wondering if the cocoa powder is raw.

I read that the green tops of root vegetables are very nutritious. I think it's in Green for Life. So I juice carrot and beet greens when I can. Also turnip greens.

Does anyone have this book? It's got some great sounding recipes. However, I'm not sure if when the author says 3 cups of sprouted almonds, he means yield after sprouting or that you measure 3 cups of almonds and THEN sprout them. Can someone please help? Pam

Thanks for posting this recipe, Taylor. I saw that you mentioned it in another post and I was going to post a request asking you for the recipe. But I did a search... and here it is! I'm excited to try it. Can't, though, until my fast is over. Anyway, it sounds delicious! Pam

Yes, love the picture. As for manna bread, the authors of the book you cite state on page 25 that they don't know what temperature the bread is heated at and so they don't know if it's raw!

Hi Ron, Just get creative. Mash an avocado with some sea salt for butter. Almost any juicy fruit like mango, pineapple, pears or peaches can be mixed with scallions, garlic, and hot peppers to create a chutney. You can squeeze an orange into some almond butter or tahini, add a bit of sea salt, nama shoyu, rice wine vinegar and ginger for a peanut sauce. Make your own ketchup with tomatoes,

Anyone been there lately? Is it any good? It used to be a bit iffy, I think because the kids that were making the food were pretty inconsistent in their techniques. Do they still have the sandwich bar? That was awesome. Pam

Nik, I have the KTec Total Blender by Blendtec. It's cheaper, quieter, and has a lower profile (shorter) than the Vitamix). I recommend it. However, if it wasn't for green smoothies, I'm not sure why I would need it. My regular blender (KitchenAid) was fine for fruit smoothies, soups and dressings. What will you use it for? Pam

I leafed through the Raw Food Detox Diet in Borders yesterday. The recipes look good and simple, but it isn't all raw, which might be perfect for your mom. Also, the Rave Diet at ravediet.com might suit her. I can't vouch for the book because I haven't seen it, but it appears to be predominantly, though not all, raw. The web site isn't the easiest to navigate. But if you scroll down the h

The Standard American Diet recommends too much protein. High protein intake causes excessive calcium secretion. This is why the recommended calcium intake is so high.

I have a Greenstar for nuts (like for "meatloaf". I also use it to juice greens, but not often. So... the Greenstar is stored under the counter since I don't use it much. I also have a Breville Juice Fountain. It's easy to clean for quick jobs like carrot or apple juice when required in a recipe. I'm more of a smoothie person... I like very green smoothies and the quick sugar rush

I'm experiencing the same thing, Sachelle. I was raw several years ago and my sleep needs diminished quite a bit. This time is different, however. I had horrible insomnia for the past year and was dependent on sleeping pills to get a few good nights a week. Since going raw about a month ago, I no longer need sleeping pills. Everytime I go into the prone position, I'm out! If there's a pillo

Julie, I'm been thinking about that myself. I am one month raw, but was one year raw a few years ago. During the time I was NOT raw, I did a one-week wilderness backpacking trip to the Sierras. It was challenging because I have many allergies and had to cook for myself apart from the group-arranged meals. Now, I face an even bigger challenge! I will be interested to see what you come up

Taylor, I don't really know anything about it... but couldn't you keep a little from each batch to start the next one? Like I said, I don't know because I don't do kefir, but I do remember seeing a raw recipe for cheese that said to keep a little to start the next batch. Good luck with it! Pam

Maybe I'm not understanding. You have to come home sometime, no? Wouldn't carrying a small bottle of the non-perishable dressing I suggested work? I've carried a leakproof bottle for weeks. Also the Bragg's in the spray bottle and olive oil in tear packages can get your through for a very long time. Bragg's goes a very long way so then you just need to carry oil packages or get it in the rest

I used to carry a bottle of 1/3 raw apple cider vinegar, Bragg's Aminos, and olive oil. It doesn't seem to go bad in my travel bag and is pretty tasty. Other alternative is to carry a small spray bottle of Bragg's (it's sold that way but I don't recall where I got it). Then I just use olive oil in the restaurant and put on a spritz of Bragg's. You can also buy extra virgin olive oil in travel

Starfruit, I just bought a Henckel cleaver from Amazon.com. It's around $50 but well worth the cost. Turn the coconut on its side. Give it a hard whack to put a slit in it. Then drain. Once drained, work the cleaver back into the slit and cut off the top. Takes much less brute strength than any other method I've tried. Pam

As others have pointed out, try simple combinations: avocado and tomato, bananas and strawberries (blended or not), romaine and a great dressing, celery and almond butter. Raw food recipes can sometimes be complicated. Since you're dealing with fresh ingredients and different preparation methods, these recipes can be difficult to interpret. Do you soak the nuts or not? How big is the onion su

I know this is an old thread but I know Alissa and I had to respond. I went to a raw retreat at her Miami home in 2003. She was gracious, enthusiastic, informed, dedicated, and has a sincere desire to make the raw food lifestyle accessible to a large number of people. No, she does not have a scientific background, nor does she pretend to. I paid to go to the retreat but anytime I emailed her

I like them with mostly greens and not very sweet. My green smoothies usually taste like milk to me. I used spinach, parsley, romaine, celery, carrots and some globe grapes. I also threw in a few large mustard green leaves. Mustard greens have a VERY strong taste but I'm determined to use them! I usually put in some ginger, too, but mustard and ginger combined is just too much. ;o) Pam
