I am reading this thread with great interest. It is so good to hear reasoned arguments put in such a clear way on all sides with no rancour. thank you everybody who has been involved. Umm - i'm in an interesting position. I had my first shot of wheatgrass juice last week and have ordered a kit to get me started with growing my own. (I didn't realise about different varieties; I'll be on a l

I start every day with a pint of hot water with the juice of half a lime (nicer than lemon I think) squeezed into it. this is really lovely and is supposed to be a great way to start the day for your liver.

I had my first shot of wheatgrass juice yesterday. It cost £2 which is reasonable I think because I have heard of it costing £3 - £4 a shot. how does that compare with you guys in america? I didn't think it tasted too bad; would probably grow on one, although it felt terrible strong and repeated on me during the afternoon. Should it be taken on an empty stomach? It felt a bit harsh.

Its hard to know on your evidence. You feel that it is your kidneys and not something structural? My partner who has a history of back problems gets a really painful back if he stays in bed for too long - like with a fever or something. eight hours is enough for him to be lying down after that he has to get up or his back starts to hurt. yours sounds a bit more serious than that though.

My runners world magazine - notorious for advocating milk for bones etc. - actually advised tropical fruit juice such as pineapple for post exercise to speed healing and reduce inflamation. I hadn't taken much notice because the diet advice is usually so wrong IMO.

very good posts from prism and lee. I would like to add that I was very close to the edge once - I didn't know what was wrong with me. I eventually went to the doctor and was prescribed anti depressants. It was as if someone had thrown me a life line. I had a rest from the terrible place that I had been living in ( I was vegan) With the meds I was able to work things through and after a few y

Prism - really interested to hear about you coming off thyroid med. I have been taking thyroid med for an underactive thyroid for about 17months now (took several months to work out dose) I am wondering if my raw food diet could get me off these meds. some people say that if you are taking med. your thyroid will not start working again on its own and you need to come off meds first. I am afra

I think it is helpful not to view things as a them and us situation. YES sometimes, some people need to be on medication and maybe for life but that doesn't mean that all doctors are hand in glove with companies that make drugs and are just in it for the money. this is such an imature and sweeping way of looking at things. The drugs may well really help you right now to get yourself strai

samhein Don't beat yourself up about it. when I have a sweet craving and fruit doesn't fix it - like when I am really pre-menstruel I eat organic green and black chocolate. I don't know if you have green and blacks - it is a very good quality chocolate and I obviously go for the vegan ones. Usually it is just a phase - i haven't had any chocolate for ages now but maybe I will when pmt strik

Lanie thats interesting. I wonder if any one else has information about this. I must say that I always feel fine after eating mushrooms. We always used to go collecting parasols, ceps and chanterelles and then fry them up and have them on granary toast. Now I'm just looking for raw ideas - yes I like the idea of spreading one with avocado and tomato too.

I think it might be easier to try and add raw to your diet gradually rather than think you have to CHANGE. I know what its like to be surrounded by meat eaters but I find that I can happily sit down to a MASSIVE salad while those around me are eating meat and all the trimmings. My partner often tips a bit of salad onto his plate and I just quietly note that and smile to myself. I wouldn't ma

I told my doctor that I was mainly raw and said I expect you don't approve and he took the wind out of my sails by saying that he didn't disaprove of anything if it works for that person and that he would only be concerned if that person was making themselves ill. I KNOW I shouldn't have said that I expected he wouldn't approve - it was early days for me then and I wasn't very confident myself

Hello I was musing on the dependence of electricity for our everyday lives. Many people use blenders, juicers, dehydrators regularly. How many people would be really inconvenienced if they for some reason could not use these gadgets? do some of you use no electrical items at all, or would some of you like not to (similar to giving up the car for green issue) I will be very interest

I wondered what ideas people have for mushrooms. I do eat them raw sometimes in salads but I don't really enjoy them like that. I do not have a dehydrator. some kind of marinade perhaps?

Commercial honey production isn't good. The bees have all their honey taken away and they are fed sugar - enough said. but I believe that very small honey farmers don't always do this. I have a friend who keeps a couple of hives and she always leaves enough of the bees own honey for them to eat. Her bees live a completely natural life, foraging for wild nectar and don't seem to object when s

It's a wonderful idea and well done to you for be so active about it. I cringe when I see what most kids eat at school. We have a famous kind of young groovy chef called Jamie Oliver (sorry if you already know about him) and he decided to tackle school dinners head on. As you can imagine he had his work cut out with resistance all round right down to dinner ladies not knowing how to cook. a

I just prefer juices - especially after hard physical effort like a run. they seem really restorative then. Getting enough fibre isn't a problem on this diet I find.

Wow I have neverheard of these fruits much less tried them. We very occasionally get custard apple here and I really like them - hard to beleive they are citrus though? and occasionally sharon fruit - always rock hard though and its luck if they ripen up or not. I shall definately keep an eye out for these - they sound lovely - chocolatey -no way!! What other unusual fruit can people recom

I agree with all the above posts. But I also cannot eat too many nuts and seeds, sprouts and specially linseeds - they bloat my tummy which then hurts like hell and then has grim repercussions. I'm hoping that one day I will be able to digest these foods. Hope things are going well for you
