For me I don't need to sleep as much or as deep as I did on a cooked food SAD diet. Really only an hour less, but I still think that's a pretty critical benefit, as 1 hour a day more time being awake definitely adds up!

It's funny because before I was into raw foods I didn't actually like my food warm anyways. I guess it was just part of my progression up to this point, but I didn't understand the logic behind why human beings cared what temperature their food was when they put it in their mouth. My family would always warm up leftovers and so forth and I just opted to eat it cold.

What about green and herbal tea? There are probably raw foodists adverse to this idea, but it isn't like a pasteurized juice or something. No enzymes to be deficient of, just the flavours and phytonutrients in the water. It's a suggestion anyways. Otherwise there are various warming herbs which I'm sure someone else can point out to you (I'm not sure what they all are).

To fresh - I took a look over Doug Graham's website. There isn't an excessive amount of information on there, and I see that he has a book - 'The 80/10/10' Diet. Would this be a good book to read if I am interested in learning more about natural hygene? It seems to me his philosophies are somewhat inline with natural hygene, and I've had an interest to read more about that lately. Thanks!

Utopian - In your initial post you stated: >Spinach has a lot of protein. I get 80 g. a day from just greens. I misinterpreted this to meaning you are getting 80grams of protein exclusively from the greens in your diet. Since one cup of fresh spinach has 1g of protein, this would mean you are consuming 80 cups of spinach per day. Therefore I made the statement I did. You later stated

I would recommend starting by adding fresh vegetable juice to your diet everyday. Ease into it from wherever you are by first making the jump to whole foods (not the store), and eliminate whatever processed or animal products you are currently eating. Once you're comfortable eating whole vegan foods (lentil dishes, brown rice, steamed vegetables etc.) then make the jump to raw food vegan if you w

fresh, While I respect your points, I have to say I dissagree with you. "1- there are omegas in most fruits and vegetables " The amount of omegas contained in fruits and vegetables is clearly not enough to support ones needs. One cup of Kale has 0.13 grames of Omega 3 fatty acids according to . Considering the set AI of Omega 3 is 1.1-1.6 grams and assumes an individual is obta

fresh, if you are going to recommend against more protein in his diet can you please give an explanation why? All conventional knowledge of nutrition would suggest that his current raw diet is severly lacking in protein. If you're findings are anecdotal, in that it seems there are raw foodies out there doing just fine on 'low protein' diets, that's fine, but I would at least like to hear yo

Jake, Short of the peanuts, you are more or less missing out on both fat and protein, and in general probably need a lot more food than what you're eating! Consider adding in some brown rice protein to your morning smoothie, and throughout the day eating more sprouts and raw nuts. Soaked almonds and walnuts will help get some good fats into your system, and flax oil is a good idea too. S

And by the way if you haven't showered under purified water you are missing out. Hot steamy chlorinated showers suck in comparison.

Hey, I found some really amazing looking filters on www.aquasana.com. They carry both shower filters and tap filters, and they look top notch. Very great pricing too. Just thought I'd enlighten everyone in case anybody else is out there looking for a good home filtration system as well. Between the shower filters and on-tap filters I can't think of a better way to get your drinking water, shor

Well iLIVE, if you haven't already read the book 'Fats that Heal Fats that Kill' by Udo Erasmus, I highly recommend it. It is one of my favorite books of all time, not just in terms of nutrition. You will basically learn everything there is to know about fats if you read that book :]

Mislu, Yes, an inbalance between omega 3 and 6 can contribute to a variety of problems and is in fact a major problem (but there are so many others) effecting most americans today. I consume an oil blend with a variety of oils in a 2:1 Omega 3-6 ratio. Since I eat nuts and avocados on top of this throughout the day, I am assuming I probably end up with a 2:1 Omega 6-3 ratio when it all come

Hi Lynn! Welcome to the forums. Lots of times dry and cracked skin can be due to an omega 3 deficiency, which is quite common in our culture. I would recommend watching what kind of fats you're eating, and try to stay away from refined, trans, and saturated animal fats, and steer towards healthy unrefined nuts and seeds and the oils from them. Flax oil is especially good for getting Omega 3 fa

I'm not sure how much omega 3 is in a tablespoon of ground flax seed.. My guess is about 4 grams or so. In that case you can certainly go with two a day if you would like. Or add some oil along with it. You can always tell if you are getting enough omega 3s by how soft your skin is. If you have dry skin, you need to oil yourself up from the inside out!

It's pretty difficult to overdose on any single nutrient when you are getting it from a food. Especially zinc.

That big military container is sweet Jgunn! If I were camping I would definitely try to get a hold of one of those, so long as I could be certain it was made out of good quality stainless steel. They mentioned some were made of aluminum.. That's worse than plastic as far as I'm concerned.

Hmm, well since soap often comes from coconut oil it makes sense that it would taste like soap. But I'll take your word that it isn't very good :] As for storing the oil, no I don't have any sort of cold storage room in my home. It's actually an apartment, and I am in Canada to boot, but the place stays unbelievably warm regardless of what temperature I set my thermostat to. I would keep it in

How do you guys store your coconut oil, in the refrigerator or at room temperature? I know coconut oil is subject to much less damage than the more unsaturated seed oils, but at room temperature my coconut oil turns almost completely liquid. On the other hand, in the refrigerator it becomes solid like wax.

Good job Jake. Yes, you definitely need a certain amount of fat if you are not consuming fat right now. Omega 3s and 6s are essential nutrients of which our body is not capable of producing on it's own and will otherwise produce disease symptoms if they are lacking. Usually your skin will be the first indicator as to whether or not you're getting enough fat, because for most people it will

Vitamin D2 is also less bioavailable than D3, but I suppose D3 isn't entirely vegan as I believe it is synthesized from sheep wool.

That's interesting EZ rider. The same thought occured to me, but I would still like to see if that can be verified in any way. I just find tap water so toxic anymore. After you use a carbon filter for both your shower and drinking water, any exposure to hard-chlorinated water feels really abrasive, let alone a swimming pool (yikes).

I don't follow any food combining either. I respect anyone who does, but for myself found it to be far too much of a hassel. I don't seem to have any digestive problems as long as I chew my food properly and don't binge excessively on a meal. 300-400 grams of fat is a lot! Wow. I would certainly not be able to do that much myself.

Hey guys, Just wondering what kind of water everyone is drinking, and or what kind of water filtration system you have in your home? I have been using Brita water containers with carbon filters for the last several years, but I have recently been finding myself using more and more water for things like sprouts wheatgrass etc, and I don't want to be using tap water for any of that.
