Wow. That guy is really putting a lot of thought into it. I just ask the stewardess for a cup of water in flight. It might not be the world's most pure water, but the plan avoids some stress, and stress depresses the immune system. The zip-lock bag is supposed to be a one quart bag, and he could easily lose all that water and the pretty glass jars too if the security people aren't feeling kind. A

Instead of a quantitative goal that tends to require journaling, I prefer more descriptive and less work-intensive goals. I tell myself how many cooked meals or avocados I might eat per week, which foods I will not eat, and which foods I'm not ready to eliminate but would like to move toward eliminating. I never have to force myself to eat healthy foods these days, so it's all about avoidance of

There are a lot of people on this forum who use olive oil, and many who don't. Processed oils, even when raw, are not really ideal food sources compared with whole coconuts or avocados, but many people use them. I use small quantities of good quality olive oil without too much worry. You should have fat somewhere in your diet. The trick is to find the style that works best for you. Vinegar is

Some of the high-end juicers have a homogenizing plate which can be used to crush and homogenize things instead of separating juice from pulp. I don't have a high-end juicer, so I can't say how well they work or which models work best. There may also be some milling machines out there that can manage it, but I don't know about them. You could try making a new original post with an appropriate sub

I have experimented with sprouting rice, and while I did get some of it to germinate it was extremely prone to mold. I decided that it was not worth it. I did have more luck with the grain quinoa. I know some raw foodies soak rice to soften it enough for eating, but I haven't tried that myself. There are some sprouts which are known to be unsafe when raw, most notably kidney beans. As a resul

The pumpkin idea is great, especially since you can give them to people for use as jack-o'-lanterns, and not for eating, until you feel confident of the safety of the soil. My father has read and loved this book, Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World, and he told me that mushrooms are apparently extremely good at drawing toxins from soil... one of the reasons I decided to onl

Osterizer makes some good blenders that are more in the price range of regular consumer blenders, and I'm sure that there are other solid brands out there too. Most standard blenders will work fine for most purposes, but you'll need to be more careful with them. Make sure that you always have enough liquid, and that you add solid ingredients slowly. Since the engine will be less powerful, it's ea

I find that my smoothies don't oxidize as quickly if they have a higher quotient of liquid. It reduces the air pockets, which reduces the oxidation, which allows me to store them much longer before drinking. Lately, apples are finally in season and I have been adding unpasteurized apple cider to my smoothies to get that liquid boost.

I eat less garlic as a raw foodie than I used to, but not because I don't like it anymore... it just tastes so much stronger if you don't cook it! Most of my garlic goes into the blender for soups, sauces, and salad dressings. I do find that it has a notable effect on my mood and energy, but then a lot of foods do. I would be nauseous if I ate an entire meal of garlic, and I know that th

I would go with the "traditional" if you feel that it tastes better. I don't think you can go wrong with raw and yummy. The science around which nutrients are healthy and/or necessary is far from complete, and I wouldn't choose one variety over another on the basis of a single nutrient. Next year scientists may discover another exciting nutrient that's more prevalent in the other var

I don't have any other suggestions for you. Most of my online sprout shopping has been from sproutpeople.com. The strategy that has worked for me is to wait until I have a long list of things to buy before ordering. If all you want is a pound of groats, the shipping will probably be prohibitive anywhere you look online. For larger purchases it's more reasonable.

The fuzz is the root sending out little tendrils looking for extra water. When I see a lot of fuzz, I usually figure that the sprouts are ready to be rinsed again.

It can be really hard to get the daily recommended iron and calcium, even with tons of greens, but if you're eating healthy and raw you may be getting a much better absorption rate than the people who created the recommendations assume. One free way to get a quick test of your iron level is to go to a red cross blood drive. They won't let you donate unless your blood iron level is sufficient, so

Yeah, coriander and cilantro are the same plant, but in the U.S. we usually call the ground seeds "coriander" and the fresh leaves "cilantro".

That's all I've seen too, and I also find it a little difficult to believe. The water might be low calorie, but most of the young coconuts have enough meat to be well over 140 Calories.

Five days is a while, but you can bring foods that will last that long if you choose the right ones. Most raw foods have high water content, so it's harder to carry many days' food at once. I infer from your question that you don't need to carry everything with you. Dehydrated raw foods will stand up best to the heat and abuse of being carried around in a backpack, and they weigh a lot less -

The cheaper ones in the bin may be fine, but they are not sold for sprouting and the same care has not been taken to make sure that they are viable. Buy a small amount and try to sprout them. If you are satisfied with the result then you may have found a cheaper supply of seed, but be warned that they might not sprout at all. Sprout suppliers will make sure that the seeds they sell are fresh enou

Hi Andy, From your description it sounds like you did more than the minimum necessary. I usually soak the nuts over nut, rinse them well and leave them in a well drained container throughout the day. When I'm in a hurry I just soak them and leave it at that. If you're in the U.S. it's likely that the almonds were pasteurized even if they were sold as raw, but I can't tell from your descript

I bring smoothies to work in quart canning jars fairly frequently. The most important thing I do to combat oxidation is make sure that there is enough liquid in the mix. I find that a wetter smoothie doesn't retain nearly as much air, and so doesn't oxidize as badly before I get around to drinking it. Sometimes the extra liquid is coconut water, juice or nut milk, but more often I don't want to t

The sun-dried tomatoes I get at my co-op have absolutely nothing added - not even salt, which is great. Recently, though, I was traveling and could only find a more commercial package of sun-dried tomatoes. The unusual thing about them is that they were not completely dry. They were partially moist for easier snacking out of the bag. I don't know how common this is, but I would add that open pack

Some people swear by raw hummus made with actual chickpeas. I think it's okay, but it's more work and I prefer the stuff made with zucchini anyway. Chavez is being a purist here by using sesame seeds instead of buying raw tahini. You could substitute the tahini if you prefer. Below that, see an entirely different hummus idea which I have never tried. Hummus from the Raw Food Gourmet by Gabri

I know that people sometimes use nut milk as a liquid base. It's too much trouble for me to bother most of the time, though. I don't know how much of the nut fat ends up in the milk, but it's probably significant.

Goitregen is not a common word. You might have better luck researching "causes of goitre/goiter". The wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goiter) suggests that some goiters can be caused by pharmacological side effects, but I don't know much about them. Alternatively, you could concentrate more generally on thyroid health.

Things like alfalfa or clover are really easy. This is a good set of instructions for sprouting them in a quart canning jar. You don't need to buy the special draining jar lids... anything that can drain will work fine. You can cut out round pieces of an old window screen, or just use a piece of a nylon stocking.

I have a Saladacco that I was given as a gift just a couple of months ago. I haven't used the Spirooli so I can't compare them, but the Saladacco is easy to use, simple to clean, and produces lovely zucchini pasta very quickly. I haven't yet tried anything harder, like carrot or beet noodles. Those would probably work, but might work better in a sturdier device.

Yeah, sorry I can't be more help. I've only had one of the white ones. It wasn't white-as-driven-snow, but I don't remember it being noticeably creamy in color, either. Since there are apparently so many naturally occurring types of coconuts I don't see any reason to suppose that it had to be the variety you sometimes buy. In the end, I can't be bothered most of the time to go to the extra tro

A kinesiologist convinced my grandfather a few years ago that he shouldn't consume yeast or vinegar. For about a year my grandfather made my grandmother crazy by refusing to eat regular bread. He had never drunk a lot of beer, and I don't think he missed that. He quizzed waiters about whether dishes were made with vinegar. Seriously, vinegar! Waiters are used to questions about dairy, eggs, peanu
