This is yesterday's Astronomy Picture of the Day. A great site. Explanation: Light-years in length, this cosmic tornado is actually a powerful jet cataloged as HH (Herbig-Haro) 49/50 blasting down from the top of a Spitzer Space Telescope view. Though such energetic outflows are well known to be associated with the formation of young stars, the exact cause of the spiraling structures app

MADRID - A parasite common in Asian bees has spread to Europe and the Americas and is behind the mass disappearance of honeybees in many countries, says a Spanish scientist who has been studying the phenomenon for years. The culprit is a microscopic parasite called nosema ceranae said Mariano Higes, who leads a team of researchers at a government-funded apiculture centre in Guadalajara, the

That's interesting Patty. I have been reading the Kalevala, an ancient epic poem of the Finns that had some influence on JR Tolkien and his Lord of the Rings. I wonder if there's a relation to Kabbalah? Paul

488. Re: maca
I think the rip-off via the patent process may only involve various extracts. The powdered Maca root may be ok. Check the product you buy and if they claim a patent try something else.

OK, I signed up and you can listen free in a very limited way, but it is mostly a commercial come on to get you to buy the expensive big package. But the free part should be very worthwhile by itself.

Here's an excerpt from the above link: "Maca may be a forgotten crop in the minds of foreign agronomists, but it has never been lost to indigenous peoples of the Andes," said Alejandro Argumedo of the Quechua-Ayamara Association for Sustainable Livelihoods (ANDES) based in Cuzco, Peru. "Andean indigenous communities have been using maca for food and medicinal purposes since befo

I googled Maca (Lepidium meyenii or peruvianum) and found out some interesting info. It's one of the many Peppergrasses (Lepidium spp) of the Mustard, Radish, Kale and Cabbage plant family and is very closely related to Poorman's Peppergrass (Lepidium campestre), a common weed. All Peppergrasses have good edible leaves but only Maca has the enlarged root. Maca grows high in the Andes (up to 14

Suncloud, I meant only to address the definition of fruit in a general way, and not you in particular, as many (me in particular) have been confused by the wildly varying definitions on this site. I should have started a separate thread. Sorry, I didn't mean to criticize you at all. I meant to criticize those that made up the erroneous definition in the first place. The "you" in

Under the botanical definition seeds are a part of a fruit for sure but they are not the fruit itself. The fruit includes all of the ripened ovary that contains the seed(s) and any other plant parts integral to the seed's dissemination. In a walnut it includes the husk that contains the shell with the seed within. In grain the hull and the awn are an integral part that contain the seed. In th

The claim that the botanical definition of fruits includes seeds like grains and nuts is totally erroneous. I have a BS degree in Range Ecology and have worked as a botanist for the BLM and the Forest Service in Idaho, Oregon, and California. The botanical definition: A fruit consists of the ripened ovary and other plant parts that contain the seed(s). The seeds are contained in a fruit.

All living plants have immunological systems that fight off bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc . When eaten live the plant's immunological system goes to work for you fighting off pathogenic critters. Cooking, however, destroys the plant's immunological substances and pathogenic organisms have a greater chance of thriving and poisoning you.

Also in Daniel is the story of Nebuchadnezzar who went out to the wilderness and ate wild grasses until he could see and talk to God. Some of the young succulent wild grasses sprouting up in the spring are very good tasting and very nutritious. The Mountain Brome that sprouts up just after the snow melts in the high Sierra is mouth wateringly tasty. Of course Adam and Eve were live food

In Survival Into the 21st Century by Viktoras Kulvinskas he says strong moons on every finger indicates strong circulation and high vitality. No moons indicates very poor circulation and lots of mucus, very unhealthy. I found this to be true with me. After a good fast my moons will be back very strong. When they're weak I'm not doing too well.
