Michelle, One other thing. According to Dr. Doug Graham all the major scientific studies on human nutrition put the daily caloric need of protein at around 10%, hence his diet and book based on a caloric ratio of 80% carbohydrates, 10% fats and 10% protein: 80-10-10. For me, this further diffuses the "protein debate". It's just too easy to get that 10% protein need from plants, espec

Hi Michelle, It's not really a debate anymore, having been long settled. It's more of a disinformation plague of ignorance PR campaign advanced by the livestock industry complete with bogus public interest organizations with names like The Center for Consumer Freedom. Any basic biochemistry textbook will tell your student that there are 20 standard amino acids that are the basic constituen

Hi Gimpy, My ex-wife's family has been growing apples in northwestern Indiana for over 100 years. They are near Wabash or Denver. Google search Doud's orchards and you'll probably come up with a contact for Steve Doud who manages the original orchards and his brother Dave, who owns County Line Orchards. Dave also grows some great strawberries and does a U-pick business. Find out where the

Organic Satsuma Mandarians are in season in California. I've gotten some home growns and bought 5 lb boxes for about $2 per pound last week. The other varieties of tangerines will come in December and January - a favorite is the Murcot. Valencia oranges are plentiful right now and good. Navels are around. I don't know about grapefruit seasonal timing.

veggielove, I would be very careful with the salt water flushes combined with water fasting. They are not all that gentle. Basically you are putting salt into the body at a highly toxic level, which is why the body reacts violently to release the toxic load. It happens so quickly that the colon doesn't have time to soften and release old impacted matter in my opinion. To me, healing the bod

fuzzysox, It can very stressful when someone close to you judges you for how you choose to eat, but from what you've shared I get the feeling that your dad decided that he knew better than you what you should eat. Did he know you had given up dairy for that long? For me, giving someone dairy who has not had it for 11 months and is recovering from painful surgery is tantamount to a violent act.

redstar, Bananas, cited above, are one of the best known examples of the advantage of eating fully ripe fruit. Bananas go from starchy and hard to digest to sweet and easy digesting. Most of my family back east still eat their bananas when there's green color near the stem, no spots and then complain when they get gas from them. Stores here mark ripe bananas down in price when they spot. It's

Hi Greg, I lost most of my weight when I went vegan and started doing intense hatha yoga. I grew an inch and went UP one shoe size. I was contracted from all the weight, repetitive motion work, stress, and lack of exercise. Lifestyle changes and becoming raw have resulted in increased vitality, freedom from all the little ailments that used to plague me and the weight staying off.

I don't think I've ever encountered a fruit that has such a love - hate response in people. The first time I smelled durian I was not inclined to go near it, but over time I noticed the pleasure it gave my friends and I began to taste it. Then I met a raw friend who spent time in Southeast Asia healing herself from severe weight loss. Durian became a passion for her and she credits it for

kristina, Welcome. It looks like you're geting a lot of great input here. Just one more thing though. Most all of the major studies on nutritional breakdown needs in terms of carbohydrate, fat and protein say that we only need to consume about 10 percent of our calories from protein. Proteins are the building block of living cells and thus, all plant based foods provide some measure of pro

I just visited some new raw friends in Chico, CA over the weekend and attended their raw potluck. Both of my friends grew up on family walnut and almond farms. The new regulations didn't seem to be of concern to them. I was told that growers are free to sell their unpasteurized shelled almonds in amounts of 99 pounds per buyer per day. Can anyone else corroborate this from other sources? I don

Suncloud, Thanks for the expansion of your information regarding organic fertilizers. The chemical plant I grew up near was located on a huge parcel of land near Chattanooga, Tennessee owned by the U.S. Army. Of course in the 1950's people were proud that it had contributed to "winning" WWII, but they had no idea what the price was to the health of the region was from the uncontrolle

My room mate and I have an asparagus patch and love the really tender new shoots. I just added Kale back into my diet am enjoying it so far in savory veggie smoothies and sliced finely in a salad. Oils are processed concentrated fats and may not be truly raw so I don't use them anymore, nor salt, except for a few occasions when I'm eating out in raw restaurants or buy olives that have been cured

Blue Butterfly, As Coco mentioned right before this, a living example is a great way to learn. If I were in your position I would consult with Dr. Rosalind Graham, partner of Dr. Doug Graham. Together they have a young daughter who is around 3-4 now. I met them as a family a year or so ago. Franchesca was conceived by 2 long term raw parents (over 20 for Doug and just short of 20 years for Roz

Thanks for your message Sapphire. I think my mom has done the best she could with the resources that were available to her and I'm very grateful for what I've learned from her, both what to do in life, as well as what to do differently. And one of the most important lessons I'm still learning is to focus on being present with what I'm doing right now and not spend my time worrying about what mig

Nicole, The more information you can provide, the easier it will be to unravel your difficulties. It would help to know exactly what you're eating, how much and when during your day. For example, if you're eating a lot of fatty foods, even though they're raw, your body is using a lot of energy to digest the food, energy that you may need for other activities. If you are improperly combining foo

Many thanks one and all for your suggestions! Sunshine, interesting that you mentioned dark greens. I was drawn to the dark green section of the produce department the other day. The fall greens looked very vibrant compared to the romaine lettuce in my basket. So I am thinking about savory green smoothies and also had a craving for a seaweed salad. Perhaps these were messages from the body to

Most people mistakenly blame sugar as the problem that needs controlling when the real culprit is likely to be high levels of fat. For an enlightening view on the subject check out Dr. Doug Graham's book on the 80/10/10 diet . Here's a short read from him on fat . I experienced a lot of whacked out periods with my diet from high and low blood sugar and was told a lot of the same things you

Hi Birdie, There's no set form for mono eating, it can be for one meal, one day or however long you want to experience this way of eating. One of the pitfalls of this (or anything else with raw lifestyle) is that you can approach it from the mind or from a feeling place. My experience is that our modern society has conditioned us to over-exercise our minds at the expense of staying in to

I've noticed in the past couple of years that the skin on the backs of my hands and tops of my forearms easily bruises or abrades when scraped and is generally dry. I'm 55 y.o. and have fairly light reddish pigmentation that burns easily. However, I notice that I don't burn as easily as I did before I became raw. In my adult life I have avoided the sun because of the sunburning. I've been fully r

Whatever seems to be in high season at the moment is my favorite. The melons from the farm where I live have just wrapped up for the season and the fields plowed under. Early rains shortened the season here. Last year we gleaned a few watermelons past Thanksgiving. Now it's on to persimmons, dates and citrus. I love durian and I'm waiting to experience these magnificent fruits fresh. I've ce

My meditation practice has evolved concurrently with my diet changes to raw, so I can't say from experience that being raw makes it easier to experience the "blank screen". From a little I've read not all of the Indian spiritual masters were even vegan, much less raw, so it can be done. It just doesn't seem to be very important beyond an interesting mind exercise. "Seek no

I tend to believe the arguments and evidence that our species evolved in the tropics where clothes were biologically unnecessary, hence our lack of full covering heavy body hair or armored skin. I don't wear clothing or very little at home unless it's really cold. When I do I opt for something loose and soft. We live in a small space and are willing to pay a little extra to keep the temper
