trees...hope
Posted by: la_veronique ()

i had this strange flashback

just the other day
a friend of mine was pointing out some trees
some rather tall trees

honestly, i'm not sure what type of trees they were
but it was like

BHAMMM!!!

i was taken back in time
to when i was about 3 years old

looking out the window of the apartment we lived at ( must of been like 3rd or fourth story building)... i had to climb on top of these little steps to look out the window ( the plastic steps are portable and made for kids to climb up to brush their teeth etc.)

and i just remember seeing those trees ( same kind)

and feeling awe

and hope

and other magical things

cuz everything was brand new back then

including the trees

might have been the first time i really NOTICED them

they were so tall

i am not sure i had any thoughts going through my head at the time ( i believe it was a "wordless" period of my life...)

but i was just instantly transported

and feeling that same sort of wordless awe

and feeling of being dwarfed

and majesty

and

and

i don't

really

know

but strange... how just a bunch of trees

can evoke such things

This happens to me every time I'm among trees with no other humans present. It's a fortunate ability to be able to recapture this sensation smiling smiley

Reminds me of Iris by Herman Hesse, an excellent short story. It's in the book Strange News From Another Star.

wilderness wonders whisk one into wordlessness

trees are cool cuz they get kicked around by the wind and snow and get pecked at by birds, and they end up all sideways sometimes, but they keep on growing and doing their thing likes it's no big deal

This topic reminds me of all the times my parents would cut down a tree on our property, because of losing it to bugs or a harsh winter, and I would be upset.I didnt like how "empty" it looked for one,but the trees were like personalities in a way.

Here are a few of my good tree memories.

I, too, miss the wonderful stand of old growth trees on the hiking trail near my house back in New Zealand. When I'm next to those big old trees with nature all around me I know that that special place in the universe is benign. I look forward to walking there again. Meanwhile, I will find some new trees to love in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Right now wild dogwood trees are in bloom in Virginia. They are absolutely gorgeous!

Kauri trees (native to New Zealand) are not as tall as redwood trees, but they are bigger in terms of the amount of wood that you could get from them (i.e., fatter trunks than redwood trees have, if you can imagine that). There was one monsterous kauri tree that we made a special trip to see. When hiking along a forest trail to get to it, it appeared that the trail ended up ahead at a cliff face, but as we got closer it became apparent that the "cliff face" was the trunk of the kauri tree! WOW! That's BIG!

Banyan trees in Hawaii are amazing. One tree is like its own forest. Weird, but wonderful.

Cottonwood trees by one house where I lived as a child had extremely rough bark and the first branches were pretty high. I would claw my way up barefoot, sit on a high branch and sing at the top of my lungs to the neighborhood.

There was a huge Norfolk Island pine that developers wanted to cut near where I lived in order to put a road straight through. I wrote a passionate, but humorous poem on a poster in order to get support to save it. I put it up by the tree. I saw lots of people reading it. It got mentioned in the local paper and may have influenced the decision to route the road AROUND the tree. smiling smiley That tree is still there to this day. smiling smiley

When dirt from roadworks was piled up almost 2 meters deep (about 6 feet) around a tree near the road shoulder, someone put up a sign saying, "Help me!" The sign on the tree got in the local paper and within days the dirt was removed in a wide circle around the tree. Then another sign appeared on it that said, "Ahhhh, thanks. That's much better!" smiling smiley That tree has survived too.

Anyone else want to tell their good memories about trees? (Hopefully they'll be pleasant or happy memories about trees and not horror stories. It's getting harder and harder to avoid bad/negative/unpleasant news. And thinking about trees makes me smile.)

Good tree memory...
My grandparents had a huge swing tied up between two big oak trees.
You could get about 20 ft off the ground each direction .
We always called it the "big swing".

That swing was a childhood memory.
Its been gone for at least 25 yrs.
Another thing besides swing back and forth on it was we liked to "wind it up" by turning it in circles and letting it go.

I had a difficult childhood and use to run away, climb up and hide in a large spruce tree in the next block. It was a safe haven.

I used to do the same with trees ^_^ I had a long piece of cardboard id bring with me to one tree, id lay it out, lay on it and nap in the sun...one time I woke up sliding down the tree, from one set of branches to another till finally I landed on the ground, perfectly fine,lol... the tree must have gotten tired, so it set me down gently...
