Date: January 21, 2012 03:35PM Nothing touches Etta James, that twinky pop diva Beyonce wishes she was half the singer Etta was. Seriously, the woman had CHOPS! She wasn't the looker these singers of today are, she relied on her VOICE and it never, ever let her down. Re: If this don't put a shudder up your spine...

I know she's gone now, but I didn't like the way she 'came' at Beyonce for singing "...her Song"......WY P.S. Why didn't they do a 'voice over' in the movie? Did you see Reese and Joaquin in "Walk the Line"? They were very good singing with their own voices...and they were not noted for their singing abilities. Beyonce is a singing Star in her own right. Date: January 21, 2012 04:34PM Well I actually think that beyonce doesn't look like etta, the hair approximates the look, but its not quite period. They updated the look for what people expect or think is more attractive for today. But its subtly different, not quite capturing her at all. And the face, well, doesn't look like her at all. Date: January 21, 2012 09:22PM I don't see what any of that has to do with singing. We've got this weird ideal that a performer has to be everything to everyone these days. For me it's just about the music. Etta can make me cry with her voice, Beyonce's work is catchy fluff in comparison. Nothing a ton of other girls aren't doing too. For contemporary female artists I prefer the work of somebody like India Arie or Erykah Badu, songs with at least some sort of meaning behind them that ventures outside of the most superfluous nothingness that passes for lyrics these days. Both of them manage to be gorgeous to look at without that being the most important thing about them too. Re: If this don't put a shudder up your spine...

Date: January 21, 2012 10:31PM Wheatgrass Yogi,
Beyonce has a great voice. However, lyrically, she lacks intelligence, depth and grit. Where you, WY, see someone serene and shy I see someone who is diffident because she hasn't lived a varied life with great highs and lows, possibly due to overprotective parents. Most of us would not wish our daughters to be put through the mill, but I think this is what separates the girls from the women--Etta James lived a life. Date: January 22, 2012 01:14AM I know very little about the singer. But I believe what has been said about singing, if a person can sing, they can sing. They don't have to be a super model to do it either. Re: If this don't put a shudder up your spine...

Date: January 22, 2012 05:17AM Oh Jo, she tries but I couldn't even get through half of that rendition. It was just flat and soulless to me. Empty. Pretty, you know? That song isn't supposed to be pretty, it's supposed to be gritty. Etta's music hurts, it's meant to squeeze your heart.
I don't have any idea about this conflict between the two of them that's being referenced here, it's not important though. Nobody sang Etta's songs like Etta did. When she was young she was a hell-cat, you can just see it. And when she was older, oh man, she was a force to be reckoned with. Like Nina. Intensity. Re: If this don't put a shudder up your spine...

I didn't get it at first...I thought it was still a joke comparing Rhianna to Etta but there was an added layer! Re: If this don't put a shudder up your spine...

Date: January 22, 2012 09:58PM I was reading an obit on Etta in the Sunt-Times; very nice. She had a heroin addiction at one point! Man, I didn't know anything about her but they mentioned this song: "Roll With Me Henry" (1954) as an early rock song that was censored.
[www.youtube.com] I don't like it when an artist is always linked with one song, book, or movie. It's nice to get exposed to other stuff. Re: If this don't put a shudder up your spine...
