I’m trying to post topics that more people will find interesting, so here’s the dominating story that’s taken the world by storm - Miley Cyrus twerking at the MTV Awards.

Like every other form of traditional media, the music industry is fighting to stay relevant. The Miley Cyrus thing is what happens when an industry becomes desperate. It loses all sense of good taste by attempting to appeal to the lowest of human sensibilities. Their last and final desperate trick is to be unhealthy. Look at the news media, movies, tv, sports, etc. There's little to no substance remaining.

Wow, I didn't know that. The internet has taken over, that's for sure. I don't like the music my daughter listens to, even though I can't understand the lyrics half the time - just the style doesn't resonate - talk about negativity; it has a depressing, angry, scary tone if you ask me.

My staples are bluegrass and classical and the occasional something else. Most of the time I enjoy the quiet of my mind.

What's a good new age album? I like Krishna Das which I guess would be considered new age or spiritual?

Thanks. Of course, Miley Cyrus is also there to distract us from things like Syria. The irony in your post is not lost.

Yes, I can't even keep track of what's happen in what country - Syria, Egypt, Libya. At least they took the heat off of Iran.

This might be my favorite Oldie - uplifting.

The Germans are pretty sober people - I guess they're still in shock over the Holocaust.

How do you watch Netflix if you don't have a TV? You don't have Roku? BTW, we're watching Inspector Lewis right now - pretty good! Also, we loved the Catherine Cookson videos - I had read all her books years ago. We didn't have a TV for years while my kids went to Waldorf, but then my husband insisted we get one so they could watch Little House on the Prairie, Dr. Who, and stuff like that when they were older. Ann of Green Gables, the PBS stuff - Upstairs, Downstairs, etc., when they were in high school. I only started watching it on a steady basis the last year or so since we got Netflix.

I have never even heard of most of that stuff. For real. Who has time to sit around watching a screen? If I weren't setting up housey and biz stuff now after this move I wouldn't even be on internet at all. In a couple days it'll be back to once or twice a week. How can you stand it, all the sitting and looking? I have so much stuff to do, where do you find the time?

No kids for one. I don't sit in front of a screen all day. It's just part of the rotation of things I do. One thing about me also is that I'm sort of lonely. We live in a new town and my spouse works long hours. I go to work and come home to an empty house. She usually gets home when I'm thinking about going to bed. I'll work, read, play guitar, eat, work out, etc. In between that stuff I'll go on the web. I can post here from the fields using my phone.

By the way, as someone who has averaged over 1,000 comments a year on this site alone for the last 7 years, I suspect that you actually know a thing or two about sitting around and "watching a screen." You comment more than I do. No offense, just presenting a statistical reality. smiling smiley

"It's better on the big screen" -KR

It's even better with a Digital Projector! Whenever I watch a movie, I'll hook up my Digital Projector and it's twice the size of the screen at the theater because I'm so close to it. I mainly use my Digital Projector for seminars, but for a treat I'll take everything off one of my walls and use it for movies. In effect, I have a screen the size of my wall or at least the height of the wall.

You know I learned to type using the chat function on this site? I'm serious, it was SO fast that your comments got totally lost if you didn't keep up and watch the screen while you were typing. I'll be forever grateful to that function, I can type like the WIND now, lol.

1000 comments a year is 3 comments a day or 21 comments a week, that doesn't seem like a lot to me... There are only 4 sites I visit regularly, it's easy to keep up with y'all winking smiley.

I think it's just plain sad that this is what young people have as their entertainment. I was in diapers during most of the Beatles' run and the heyday of the Stones, but even those groups that were big in the late '70s/early '80s were both talented and artistic. Even when they were also blatantly commercial. Now it's just crass and totally devoid of anything uplifting. That is the definition of pornography versus sexuality in art--the former only uplifts a dick and not one's soul...

How come that creepy 36 year old guy (Robin Thicke) that she was gyrating against isn't getting any flak for taking part in that dog and pony show? Seems to me that his act should be a bit more mature at this point in his life.

"Well, I was not in the slightest turned on by it. I think it's brainwashing for young teens also who watch the stuff and might want to emulate her character in thinking this is what makes people famous and 'attractive'. After all, the thuggish culture would enjoy it. I remember in middle school and often in high school also, people thought Rebellion was Cool. same here. "

Here here. It also reminds me of the Jimi Hendrix days when everyone thought it was so cool for him to set his guitar on fire in front of his amp & gyrate about like ke was performing a sex act with it.

Stupid behaviour then from the celebrity crowd, stupid behaviour now.

Thanks to Miley Cyrus, "Twerking" has been added to the Dictionary -

‘Twerking,’ made famous by Miley Cyrus, makes it to online dictionary -

Washington Times [www.washingtontimes.com]

[oxforddictionaries.com]

I've lost all respect for the Dictionary now that they're cluttering it up with Pop Culture lingo.

When I first watched the Miley Cyrus video, I was wondering - what's that thing beside her mouth? Then I realized it was her tongue. I thought it looked stupid tongue sticking out smiley

That was totally cewl, man. Monterrey? Ever watch it? Jimi was spiritual; a SHAMAN! This was porno for the lamebrained.

And she wore granny panties to boot! Yeah, her azz was hanging out but they were high-waisted. What was up with the teddy bear theme? Weird...

LOL, I finally saw this performance everybody is all het up about. Whatever, it was so incredibly lame, noteworthy only for the absolute lack of dance or vocal talent. Who choreographed that mess? And the SET! LMFAO! That was a big music awards show? Oh my gosh, what is the world coming to when something like that passes for entertainment?
As for the spectacle she supposedly made of herself, I didn't think it was such a big deal. I've seen worse for years and from younger girls than her, hello Britany! Provocative gyrations used to distract from an inability to dance OR sing. Super stupid. I almost feel sorry for that old man she was bumping up against but he asked for it with that song he sings. Never heard that before either, it was gross.

This is pretty funny though...

This is why the country's going to hell in a handbasket -

The Celebrity Worshipers now outnumber the Free-Thinkers -

Final Tally: Americans Were 12 Times More Interested in Miley Cyrus Than Syria - The Cut

[nymag.com]

"Americans viewed twelve times as many pages about Miley Cyrus as they did about Syria — even though the news sources published 2.4 Syria articles for every one about Miley.

In the three days surrounding Miley's VMA performance and the administration signaling its willingness to bomb Syria, Outbrain's network generated 8,104 stories about the former and 19,568 about the latter. The day after the VMAs, Miley Cyrus stories accounted for 12 percent of total U.S. page views, while Syria stories accounted for 1 percent.

Interest in the starlet significantly outpaced Syria in England, Australia, France, Germany, and every other nation in Outbrain's analysis — except Israel and Russia. Globally, Miley Cyrus stories generated eight times as many page views as Syria did in the days surrounding the VMAs."

I actually thought the music was decent. Most music today is unlistenable to me. I love melody and rap is devoid of it, as is that "hipster" music I hear in cafes that 20-something baristas seem to favor. It just grates on my last nerve. But I just watched Miley's new video for "Wrecking Ball" and it wasn't half bad for what is out there. I don't dislike something simply for being uber popular, nor for not being cerebral or artsy fartsy. And I actually think she has a good voice. Her dancing is just meh to me. Ironically I think back in the day, Britney was a better dancer than singer. But Madonna was initially a dancer and not known for a great voice. It's about the entertainment value. Xxxtina has great pipes but I find her pretty shrill a la Celine.
