Raw garlic

A friend of mine believes the consumption of garlic offers only benefits & I've tried to discourage him from eating it. He'd like me to direct him to a source that discusses the deleterious effects of eating garlic. Anyone know of any?

As with all other foods... just use your intuition. Eat it and decide for yourself. I ate raw garlic daily for about a year and I loved it. It was incredibly stimulating, helped pass through much of what might have been slow moving in my digestive tract, and in a very metaphysical way of saying it, it seemed to keep negative energies clear of me, inside and out. Probably the smell alone did that winking smiley in regards to others. Anyways, use your intuition and notice changes. It is a potent food that should be respected, not feared. Trust that your body knows how to use it and it will tell you when you have had enough, if it wants it at all.

I've tried chewing it, chopping and eating with salad, and pressing it into water with a garlic press. The last option has been the most tolerable, and I don't mind putting it down this way every once in a while if I am feeling under the weather. I'm not sure it is necessary if even wise to eat it every day, but if I were to eat raw garlic regulary, I would probably blend it with tomato juice... might even taste good!

Garlic is a poison that's why it works, pharmaceudical drugs are basically poisons too, that's why they work. The body is stimulated to fight the poison and while the body is fighting the poison it fights other things as well. (These are generalized statements of course.)

Raw garlic kills yeast -- google it. I had a huge yeast problem, and when I went raw, I laid low on the fruit (especially high glycemic fruit) and added raw garlic to my raw soups -- GONE!!! It is strong, though. I also put it in raw pesto and slather it on grated summer squash.

what are you talking about dude? garlic is an aphrodisiac! anyhow, i don't mind the smell of garlic on my partner, especially if i have eaten some too.

i chop it up and sprinkle it in stuff, crush it and add it to salad dressing, etc. i love garlic, it's YUM!
if i'm sick i will chop it and swallow a spoonful with some water. i don't chew it up but that's not neccessary. if the kids are sick i stick a slice of garlic to the bottoms of their feet under a bandaid and cover with a pair of socks overnight. they get garlicy breath, it's funny!

though why would you presume to boss your friend around like that about their diet? if he likes garlic, he likes garlic. it's not going to hurt him much even if it turns out that it isn't great for him.

Its funny how for some people garlic is an aphrodisiac, and for others its a repellent.

Many yogis and people who meditate often eschew the use of garlic because it disturbs their meditation and their stillness.

But many others use garlic for medicine. My experience with medicines is that they do not promote health but rather serve to suppress symptoms. In the case of garlic, it is a powerful antibiotic. So it will kill germs and bacteria in your system. But it will also kill the bacteria you want to keep. And it will kill cells in your body. This is why the body actively tries to eliminate garlic as soon as you eat it through the pores of your skin.

If your body has a lot of bacteria you want to kill, it seems to me that strengthening the immune system and building your general health is a more effective way to have great health rather than take a substance to kill off the symptom. Removing the symptom of disease does nothing for removing the cause.

garlic goes back to ancient Greece, Egypt and the time of
Moses. Like so many other fruits and vegetables in our
normal diet, garlic also appeared in ancient Rome, where it
was said to be used to clear the arteries. It was used from
Roman times until after World War 1 as a poultice to reduce
the possibility of infections. Some of Louis Pasteurs early
experiments used garlic to kill bacteria. Garlic was called
"Russian penicillin" during World War 11 because the
Russians used it for treating the military after the antibiotic
supply was depleted.
Studies have found that daily garlic supplements reduce
ones risk of catching a cold by half. The same study found
that those who caught colds while using garlic recovered
more quickly.
Garic and onions are both considered highly beneficial
in the prevention and treatment of stomach cancer. A study
done in a Chinese province with a high rate of stomach cancer
showed that those who ate significantly more garlic
did not have cancer. More extensive research is needed, but it
appears that garlic may protect against stomach cancer by its
ability to decrease gastritis.
Regularly eating garlic lowerss blood pressure. In other
beneficial actions, garlic helps atherosclerosis and
diabetic heart disease, and reduses the risk of heart attack or
stroke. Two or more servings a week may help prtect against colon cancer.

i SAID i didn't mind garlic breath already! let me clarify, I Don't Mind Garlic Breath. not the stinky pasta and bread kind but the fresh garlicy salad kind. i've never minded the stink of humanity, healthy sweat and all that. i can pass on farts and bad sad b.o. but natural smells don't turn me off. not even the rotting compost gets to me, it's just decomposing food. i mean, i wouldn't use it as a facial mask or anything but it's just a smell. and i have a Very strong sense of smell too!

geez, maybe when you become a parent and have to deal with stinky messes you become less sensitive. fake-o perfume can still knock me to my knees but regular ole people smells just don't freak me out anymore.

I am familiar with the natural hygiene argument against using garlic and indeed lemon as well indeed all herbs and spices.

Does any one know whether Norman Walker took onion or garlic?

What is the longest living raw fooder that we know about?

But I like to be a rebel!

I have a chronic health problem.

I have been eating around 12-15 cloves daily sometimes more for the last three weeks and have noticed that it produces a herx reaction. I feel bad!

Today I have felt very apathetic and have yet to have my garlic!

I always take my garlic with lemon and olive oil.

We live in a chemical soup surrounded by viruses etc not on some paradise island unless you have the money like Doug to live on Hawaii. So we need to take stuff that kills!

THE BENEFITS OF THE USE OF GARLIC
IN HERBAL PREPARATIONS

MEDICINAL QUALITIES OF GARLIC
Garlic is well known and has been one of the most important medicines in the East and West for over 5,000 years. Known for it’s medicinal action and uses as an diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, stimulant, antibacterial, antifungal, alterative, antispasmodic, cholagogue, vulnerary, and vermifuge. Wonderful effects and healing powers have been ascribed to garlic. It possesses stimulant and stomachic properties in addition to its other virtues. Garlic an natural penicillin has only 1% of the impact of sinthitic penicillin but it is more effective with gram negative bacteria than penicillin. Modern science has done extensive research and explored the chemistry and pharmacology of garlic and with this research proves that garlic is a valuable aid to keep the heart and blood vessels healthy.

In addition to keeping the heart and blood vessels healthy research has proved that garlic lowers you blood pressure, lowers your cholesterol, fends off respiratory infections, infections of the urinary tract and digestive tract. Bacteria shown to be susceptible to garlic in the test tube include species from Staphylococcus, Escherichia, Proteus, Salmonella, Providencia, Citrobacter, Klebsiella, Hafnia, Aeromonas, Vibrio and Bacillus genera. Fungi demonstrated also to be susceptible to garlic in lab tests include the genera Microsporum, Epidermophyton, Trichophyton, Rhodotorula, Torulopsis, Trichosporon, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Candida, including Candida albicans. It is reported that garlic is more effective against pathogenic yeasts than nystatin, especially Candida albicans.

Besides what I have listed above, in Paavo Airola, Ph.D. book The Miracle of Garlic he states the following. “In the controlled and reliable clinical studies animal as well as human, reported in major medical journals world wide in the last couple of decades, garlic has been shown to have almost miraculous preventive and or therapeutic properties in the treatment of variety of diseases.” Here is a partial list of ailments that have been successfully treated by raw garlic or garlic extracts: high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, tuberculosis, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, hypoglycemia, bronchitis, asthma, whooping, pneumonia, common cold, allergies, intestinal worms, intestinal putrefaction and gas, parasitic diarrhea, dysentery and insomnia.

In addition to the above list of ailments, in my research I found that garlic also shows miraculous properties in treating heavy metal poisoning. Dr. Paavo Airola book The Miracle of Garlic he relates the following regarding heavy metal poisoning and the use of garlic. “ The threat to our health from environmental poisons, and specifically heavy metals, is increasing every day. Lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, and copper poisoning are becoming epidemic. Lead and mercury come mostly from polluted air plus industrial and medical uses, such as lead containing paint and mercury containing amalgam dental fillings. Contaminated fish are also a common source of mercury poisoning. Copper enters our bodies usually from copper water pipes, commonly used in plumbing.”

Not only is heavy metal poisoning a threat to our health it is also difficult to treat. Chelation treatment is the only known medical treatment that is effective in detoxifying the body of heavy metals. Until now, the Japanese study conducted by Drs. Ikezoe and Kitahara, shows that Kyolic a raw garlic extract developed in Japan is effective in protecting the body from the toxic effects of the heavy metal poisoning. Dr. Kitahara and his co-workers, Ikezoe and Yamada, conducted controlled studies on animals and humans. The method of study was observation of release of potassium and hemoglobin by heavy metals from erythrocytes, and destruction of erythrocyte membrane. The conclusion of the study was that garlic preparation prevented the poisoning effects arising form heavy metals and protected the erythrocyte membrane for destruction.

Equally important garlic has been known for its anticancer and tumor properties. Propyline sulfide, a garlic and onion extract found to be mildly effective against tumors, acts on the enzyme liposaminase, related to cancer development if not properly controlled. Dr Benjamin H.S. Lau of the Loma Linda University School of Medicine suggested in 1992 that garlic is a “biological response modifier”; it increases the body’s defenses against cancer. Lau’s research found that garlic’s sulfur compounds boost the activity of macrophages and T-lymphocytes, immune system components that are summoned to destroy tumors.

In addition to garlic’s sulfur compounds that boost the immune system, garlic contains a series of natural antioxidants that may help to explain its strong anticancer and antitumor activity. Antioxidants disarm reactive body chemicals that can trigger the onset of cancer. By inhibiting the harmful action of oxygen (impacting on free radical activity), garlic possibly limits cell membrane damage, which is one mechanism in the aging process.

In a like manner to the research done by Loma Linda and the Synergies in the Life of Science the American Cancer Society states the following on how garlic is effective against cancer. “Garlic is promoted for use as a preventive measure against the formation of cancer. Although several compounds in garlic may have anti-cancer properties, the allyl sulfur compounds are said to play a major role. These compounds are reported to prevent cancer by decreasing the activation of carcinogens within the body, reducing the production of carcinogens, and increasing the body's ability to repair damaged DNA”.

Besides the American Cancer Society, The National Cancer Institute central files show that the incidence of cancer is extremely low in France where garlic consumption is the greatest and that garlic eaters in Bulgaria do not have cancer. It is reported in a textbook on pharmacognosy that a physician in British Columbia has successfully treated malignant situations by prescribing the eating of garlic.

There is an old folk tale that states: “Eat onions in March and garlic in May, Then the rest of the year, your doctor can play”. Garlic has been used for centuries as an effective preventive treatment for colds and flu. Medical science considered the old folk tale a superstition and an “old wives tale” of ignorant peasants. Finally, Dr J. Klosa, M.D. scientifically tested the effectiveness of garlic as a cold remedy, and reported in the Medical Monthly in March 1950. The report stated: “cold symptoms like grippe, sore throats, runny nose, fever, cough, and rhinitis were cut short in every case”. All Patients showed a distinct lessening of the period of the disease as well as of convalescence required. Both raw garlic and garlic preparations are effective.

Likewise, raw garlic studies reported that garlic juice diluted 30-40 times stops the growth of certain types of bacteria in a nutrient media--garlic has strong germicidal properties, which are not found in other plants. When aneurinase bacteria grow in the body, the majority of the internally produced vitamin B1 is spoiled by this bacteria--garlic shows antipyretic effects when it, diluted with water, is applied externally to a person's body at times of high fever.

Beside garlic being effective for colds and flu, new research shows that taking garlic during pregnancy can cut the risk of pre-eclampsia (raised blood pressure and protein retained in the urine). Studies reveal that garlic may help to boost the birth-weight of babies destined to be too small. The research was carried out by Dr D Sooranna, Ms J Hirani and Dr I Das in the Academic Department of Obstertrics & Gynaecology at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in London UK. They concluded that although pre-eclampsia and growth retardation are complex multifactoral conditions, taking standardised garlic tablets (for further details please contact us) throughout pregnancy might decrease the chances of these types of complictions at birth. They focused on growth retarded babies and pre-eclampsia, a potentially dangerous condition for mother and baby which occurs in about one in ten pregnancies. Experiments by the research team showed that adding extracts of garlic to cells from the placenta of women likely to suffer from these conditions was able to quickly stimulate growth. Furthermore, the activities of key enzymes that are reduced in the abnormal pregnancies were significantly increased when garlic was added.

In Dr Christopher’s newsletter on garlic he states the following on garlic’s antibacterial properties: “Many marvelous effects and healing powers have been claimed for garlic. It is probable that none of them were exaggerated. I, myself, have seen it cure tuberculosis, asthma, bronchitis, several skin diseases, stomach ulcers, leg ulcers, athletes foot, furunculosis, abscesses, epilepsy, and special affinity for the respiratory tract, lungs, bronchi, and so forth, though it diffuses itself through the whole system and wherever there is pus, it is a certain and safe remedy. The use of garlic in the World War as an antiseptic was most sensational. In 1916, the British government asked for tons of the bulbs offering one shilling a pound for as much as could be produced. A great quantity of it was used for the control of suppuration in wounds. The raw juice was expressed, diluted with water, and put on swabs of sterilized sphagnum moss, which was applied to the wounds. Where this treatment was given, it has been proved that there has never been one single case of sepsis of septic results”.

One component of garlic, allicin attacks more than 23 kinds of bacteria, including staph and salmonella, as well as 60 types of fungi and yeasts, is effective against all of 17 most dangerous fungi (Candida albicans included) expels tapeworms, and restores sensation in areas affected by leprosy. Dr. Byron Murray, Professor of microbiology at Brigham Young University has seen allicin immobilize 90 percent of a virus in a laboratory dish within 30 minutes. Allicin is known to destroy viruses that cause herpes and upper respiratory infection.

Beside garlic destroying viruses types of bacteria The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's Human Nutrition Center in Beltsville, MD, has demonstrated that the herb can reduce not only levels of blood fat, but blood sugar, too at the same time increasing the level of insulin in the blood. Which means better diabetes control.

On the other hand hypoglycemia means low blood sugar the opposite of diabetes. Garlic seems to have the same affect on hypoglycemia has it does on diabetes. Demonstrating several of the common sulfur containing compounds a special sugar metabolism regulating factors which help normalize both high and low blood sugar levels. Garlic is an excellent detoxifier, it improves the general metabolism and has a stimulating effect on the liver.

Dr Walker's Program

Raw vegetable and fruit juices offer all the live enzymes and detoxicating qualities needed to keep our bodies strong, healthy and able to combat the many enemies of contamination and pollution in the world today. Our immune systems are kept at their peak when we consume "raw" vegetable and fruit juices on a daily basis.

Vegetable juices are the "builders" of the body, while fruit juices are the "cleansers". Every cell, gland and organ benefits from pure, natural form of nutrition. It is comforting to realize that by drinking raw vegetable and fruit juices every day, our diet is complete in all the vitamins and minerals it needs to remain younger, stronger and healthier.
Dr Walker's Program To A Healthier More Vibrant Life

Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Juices by Dr. N. W. Walker was written to better explain and emphasize the procedures and specific benefits of juicing. Raw carrot juice for instance is rich in Vitamins A, B, B, C, D, E, and K. Properly prepared raw carrot juice aids digestion and is valuable in the maintenance of the bone structure that supports our entire body, including the teeth. Even intestinal and liver diseases are sometimes due to the lack of certain vitamins and minerals found in raw carrot juice. Endive juice contains elements essential to the optic systems while the cucumber juice offers the best of diuretic qualities. The list goes on.

It is well worth one's time to study the benefits derived from "fresh raw" juices. Actually, it's worth far more than your time... after all, this is your health and your life. Take control, feel better, look younger, and enjoy your life more completely. You are worth it!

Keep the colon clean. The health of your colon can be an indicator of your health. Laxatives are not healthy and certainly not the proper answer to constipation. Raw vegetable salads, fresh fruits, legumes and unprocessed grains along with plenty of distilled water will keep your colon regular and healthy. "Colonic Irrigations" once or twice a year, along with enemas done at home, offer an optimum way in which to insure a clean and active, healthy intestinal track. Being "regular" is having a bowel movement at least once a day, though often times two or three movements a day is ideal. The elimination of red meat and all processed foods from the diet is equally important. A well cleansed colon in perfect working order is absolutely essential for a long, productive and active life. It is important to note that when the colon is healthy, and not blocked, you are avoiding innumerable ailments. Because the colon is a natural breeding ground for pathogenic bacteria, it is essential that we prevent a toxic condition from developing in the colon. By maintaining a proper and clean environment for the "good bacteria" we avoid the "bad bacteria" which is dangerous and disease producing.

Drink PURE water. The body is dependent on fresh, clean water. The minerals, bacteria, and commercial additives in inorganic water (i.e. tap, spring, well water, etc.) are inorganic and cannot be utilized by the body. The vitamins and minerals within vegetables and fruits and their juices are organic and therefore beneficial to your health. Distilled water is in reality steam that has condensed back into water. Bacteria, parasites (including Cryptosporidium parvum that is so devastating to those in ill health) is destroyed by the distillation process. Some authorities believe that distilled water acts like a "sponge" and assits the body in eliminating toxins, etc. through the body's normal elimination processes. Drink plenty of vegetable and fruit juices and distilled water.

Regular exercise. It keeps our hearts healthy, our blood pressure intact, our respiratory systems strong, and our metabolism balanced. Walking is the best exercise you can do. It can burn calories and tone muscles. In addition to weight control, exercise strengthens the immune system, relieves stress, and because of the release of endorphins, lifts your spirits. Recent medical research has found that during exercise the body releases several different chemicals, some of which have been found to deter cancer. A 30-minute walk every day is truly beneficial to your health. Also, bear in mind that the body needs sufficient rest and sleep to function at its' best.

Control your weight. Weight control is a very real and all to common problem among people today. Carrying an excess amount of weight dramatically affects the state of ones overall health. High blood pressure, clogged arteries and fatigue are only a few reasons why maintaining a healthy weight is so imperative. A long and healthy life cannot be achieved when the body is forced to deal with such a myriad of dilemmas. Weight control need not even be an issue if we simply restrict our food consumption to salads composed of raw vegetables and fruits, drink their juices and distilled water. You will feel much healthier and your vitality will increase, when all red meats, fats, commercial sugars and starches are eliminated from the diet.

The elimination of unhealthy products. Some of the most harmful food products consumed today include processed sugars, harmful fats, cow's milk and soft drinks. Because the human body does not tolerate, and in many cases, is damaged from the consumption of such products, one would be wise to consider not ingesting them. This elimination may very well in and of itself, better insure a longer and healthier life. The pancreas, for instance, is both overworked and subject to disturbing reactions when we consume sugar. When the body processes meat it produces a great deal of uric acid. The muscles absorb much of what should be expelled through the eliminative system and what sometimes occurs is the manifestation of various conditions such as rheumatism, neuritis and sciatic. it is self-preserving not to tempt bad health with bad food choices.

Alcohol and tobacco products are carcinogenic, organ damaging and life threatening to all who imbibe. Though these habits remain widespread throughout our world today, few would argue of their obvious dangers to our health and to the negative effect on the very length of life itself. To live longer, healthier and with vitality, we should eliminate all detrimental products from our lives.

Other vital nutrients that play important defense roles in your health include plentiful amounts of Vitamin C, raw onions and garlic. They offer strong immune boosting qualities, act as an excellent cleansing agents, are readily available, and should be taken advantage of on a regular basis. Ideally we would all grow our own food in our own healthy soil. But this of course, is not an option for the majority of our population. What is possible is selecting the best of all foods that you can possibly find.

Last, but not least, is our spiritual and emotional health. Stress, anger, resentment, the need to "get even" are all negative emotions and can play havoc with our physical health. Heart attacks, strokes and nervous disorders are only a few of the conditions associated with such a negative life-style. The opposite of negativism is optimism. Laughter, spiritual strength, the ability to forgive and forget, to deal with our every day problems with an attitude of solving them is essential to keep the glands in our body working together. Our physical health is dependent upon a calm, serene mental attitude.

Self-preservation utilizes wisdom. The knowledge and application of defensive procedures can do much to protect and lengthen our lives. For instance, it is as wise to always wear a seatbelt as it is to avoid preservatives and pollutants whenever possible. Adopting and exchanging unhealthy habits to healthy habits is as easy as eating smaller meals, eating them more frequently, and chewing ones' food for a longer period of time are changes your entire digestive system will thank you for. Utilize your wisdom, it will benefit you greatly in your quest to live a long and vibrant life.

I personally don't like garlic anymore, whereas when I was eating SAD I totally loved it. Something changed in my taste buds as I stayed all raw for a longer period of time. For someone who loves the taste of garlic, in spite of its toxic qualities, its probably not going to hurt them assuming they have a high level of health. Someone who is very weak and near dying, its going to take a larger toll on their health.

For a healthy person, their body rapidly removes garlic from the system, expelling the toxins out of the skin and sweat almost at the instant the garlic is first ingested. For a person who eats the same amount of garlic but their body doesn't expel the toxins from the skin, well this is not a good sign of great health.
