Date: October 08, 2008 03:11AM The Keitt mango, grown organically in California, are now in season. Look for them in your organic market from Purity Organic. John Kohler wrote an article about them called My Favorite Mango - The California Green Keitt Mango. Re: California mangoes

The coolest thing is to be so excited about this...! About a year ago I wouldn't even have ignored the fact of local mangoes... surely not now! Makes me feel so much more alive... Re: California mangoes

Date: October 09, 2008 02:03AM Make sure you let them ripen fully. They are so great and alive compared to other heat treated mangoes.
fruitgirl- 1100 varieties is quite a few. I'd love to experience them all. Re: California mangoes

Date: October 10, 2008 08:55PM Not too brag or anything, BUT, I live in the California Central Valley. That means I get fresh produce all year long. I'm literally surrounded by almond orchards. Also a lot of peaches, nectarines, plums, grapes, corn, cherries, strawberries, oranges, lemons, onions, garlic, etc, etc. etc.
I haven't seen any California mangoes yet. I'll have to keep my eyes open for some. Re: California mangoes

Date: October 11, 2008 04:26AM I just bought 4 giant ones since I saw them in the market after reading your post, Bryan. Have you found John's advice to be fairly accurate regarding appropriate ripeness being indicated by similar "give" to a ripe avocado?
I don't want to eat them too early but I don't want to wait too long either... Re: California mangoes

Date: October 11, 2008 05:34AM The "give" is a good sign. Also, the texture of the skin changes. When it is unripe, the skin is slippery. But after it ripens, the skin isn't as slippery, it is a bit wrinkled or it sort of sticks to your finger rather than slips underneath it. Re: California mangoes

Date: October 13, 2008 02:17AM Thanks Bryan and others.
I almost always skip mangoes because I assume they are shipped from afar and treated in some undesirable way. I'm in California. I'll be on the lookout. Kit Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
