Sprouted papaya seeds????
Posted by: pippin07 ()

I opened a papaya for lunch today and to my surprise found most of the seeds had sprouted inside! Is this a good thing? Well, that papaya was the best, most sweet papaya I have ever tasted!! But I am wondering, are papaya seeds edible?

I bought it an an Asian store but it was from Mexico.....go figure. And as a side note I reluctantly purchased a pineapple. Reluctantly because it is so hard to get a good pineapple, but let me tell you, man was that pineapple luscious! Not a twinge of an acid bite, totally sweet! I feel so lucky! :-)

I think the seeds are edible, because I saw a chef on TV showing how to make a salad using papaya seeds for texture and an interesting flavor. I made the mistake of putting them in a smoothie with papaya, banana and orange about a month ago, however, and that smoothie was really bitter. The flavor reminded me of mustard greens. (Ewww.) So apparently the seeds are quite bitter or pungent.

The seeds are certainly edible (peppery). What IS unusual (and the reason they normally DON'T sprout inside the plant) is because the seeds are surrounded by a thin, translucent membrane that is full of pulpy fluid. Normally one would need to break these membranes....and then expose them to warmth and moisture. I suppose if the fruit were exposed to high heat, it might be possible that the membranes inside might burst. No worries, eh?

couldn't be that. Irradiated foods don't sprout! smiling smiley

Irradiation also doesn't necessarily produce heat, to my knowledge, at least not long term heat as you would need it to make something sprout.

Hmm, you're right cocoa-nibs. Maybe they subject them to 'pasteurization'-- heat before they import them.

Another use for papaya seeds:-

Digestive enzymes:-

Dry them out on your kitchen table or preferably in the sun. Once dried, grind them up in a coffee grinder until it turns to tiny grains.

Sprinkle this on any cooked foods and meat products you might eat so they are easier for your body to digest and pass quickly through the body.
