Green smoothies - which greens should I rotate?

Date: June 01, 2008 11:24PM I just started making green smoothies this past week- I used kale to start off with. Which green should I try next? Honestly, I wish I could use kale exclusively, I love the stuff. But I am a little worried about goitrogens so I dunno if I should maybe combine romaine with a cruciferous green. It seems all dark leafy greens contain goitrogens. I don't have any thyroid issues, do I need to worry about this? Anywho... if y'all could give me some examples of leafy green rotations for smoothies I would appreciate it. Re: Green smoothies - which greens should I rotate?

Date: June 02, 2008 01:14AM I have found a comfortable level with about 1/2-1 lb of romaine per day and handfuls of cruciferous (kale, collards, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, bok choi, arugula) and goosefoots (spinach, chard, beet greens) per day.
Crucifers are generally much cheaper than goosefoots, both by the pound and by the calorie. I think it's because the goosefoots don't last as long after they are picked. You could also throw some dandelion greens, parsley, mint, dill, and basil in occasionally. I like to rotate through the different families as my budget permits but I have romaine every day. If I were wealthy I'd also have baby spring mix daily to sub for some of the romaine. Or microgreens. Re: Green smoothies - which greens should I rotate?

Date: June 06, 2008 05:10AM Would celery or cucumber turn a smoothie green? Like if one were to use less leafy greens than usual and add celery/cucumber. Re: Green smoothies - which greens should I rotate?

Date: June 06, 2008 01:14PM celery/cucumber are good, but not leafy greens, and not so dark. Re: Green smoothies - which greens should I rotate?
