Really Raw Dates?
Posted by: jamielor ()

Are the organic dates bought in the plastic containers in health food stores really raw? I've heard they are heat treated to kill insects.
If so where can I buy really raw dates now.
Has anyone bought from this company? www.dateland.com

Are they really raw?

I know this doesn't answer your questions, but your post reminded me of a most fascinating place I visited out near Death Valley, CA almost 2 yrs ago. This place is hidden in the most God-forsaken country and if you ever go to visit it, you will feel like you are lost forever and will NEVER reach the place!! It's an astounding trip to the location and even MORE shocking to find such a lush, green oasis, literally hidden away down in the most forbidding desert you could ever want to visit. The history of this place is fascinating as well. We walked through the date groves and I ate fresh dates that had fallen from the trees. It was like pure heaven! The driveway down INTO the farm is most amazing and forbidding as you wind down through abandoned, terrifying mine shaft entrances surrounded by sandstone and sand. It was truly an unforgettable experience and probably one of the highlights of my visit out there.

jamielor,

The dates at my local Arabic import store are imported direct from groves in the Middle East and are just sun dried. Maybe that's the case with yours?

Did the dates have a slight oil shine to them, or were they completely dry on the surface?

Dates are "dry" when they are havested. When they come off the tree, they look and taste and feel exactly like the whole dates look in the stores. Of course, some manufacturers wash them in chemicals to make them shiny and "appealing to the eye," but they are actually "dry" and sticky-sweet on the tree when they are ripe for harvest.

It may depend on the variety.

I have purchased "wet" dates at farmers markets. They are perishable and definitely not the same as the ones sold in stores.

Bryan, where do you order your dates from?
I think u said once before but I forgot.
The dates from the date people aren't ready yet but I am craving them!
I am not crazy about the medjools and they are the only ones in the stores around here.

Yes, I was referring to the medjool dates specifically. Should these have a dry or oily finish to them?

I don't know if you have Trader Joe's nearby, but their dates are raw (I don't know if they're organic or not).
