It would seem they were added to the diet in the same way other strong spices were, namely to stimulate the appetite, which is actually accomplished by their irritating effect. Why stimulate the diet? Because cooked food becomes homogenized, thus boring; in comparison to raw food, where for example in a bunch of grapes there are subtle differences between grapes. A banana, or fig needs no condiments. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
