Salmonella outbreak in raw, cultured cashew cheese product in California

The California Department of Public Health warned on New Year’s Eve that salmonella poisoning has been associated with some cheese spreads under The Cultured Kitchen brand manufactured in West Sacramento.

The company initiated a voluntary recall of all flavors of its cashew cheese products with expiration dates on or before April 19 because of the risk of contamination with salmonella.

Fifteen cases of illnesses have been reported in the Western U.S., with 12 of them in California.

The products are sold in natural food stores and at farmers markets.

All six flavors of cheese were recalled, including plain, smoked cheddar, pepper jack, habanero cilantro lime, basil pesto and white cheddar.

Salmonella infections can be lethal. The onset symptoms include fever, strong abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Three people have been hospitalized with this warning, according to the California Department of Public Health.

While California is a large cheese producer, cashews are a tropical product.

Ok...but so what? Around 30,000 people get salmonella each year from meat: [www.cdc.gov]

While good to know, let's keep this in perspective!

Very risky business selling dense raw food products. One mistake anywhere along the line and you can loose everything. I would say to anyone contemplating such an adventure - don't do it.

I don't live in a hot spot of raw food. In fact I have never met another rawfoodists and no one I have talked to knows of anyone else doing this so to me it's quite surprising to hear that raw cultured cheese is something people would sell or buy at places like farmer's markets which probably don't keep things adequately refrigerated. All in all not a good idea and one who's time is probably thankfully over.

Um, SueZ, please forgive me if I am wrong about this but you sound embedded. You are on a raw food forum and very anti cultured plant foods because of safety issues? Things that make ya go hmmm...

This is exactly what I am talking about. This is being done by design, people. I promise not to bring up this crap but if someone else does, I will answer it. You start it and I'll finish it for you.

Salmonella comes from BIRDS! That's it. It is NOT possible for cashews to become contaminated with salmonella unless they were from India in some warehouse with bird @#$%& all over it as they claimed with some peanuts here. I still call bee ess.

Why is there all this "contamination" with plant foods versus animal products? Because ever since RAW became so huge, "they" want us to link raw with danger and sickness. Because they're SCARED.

Another thing--this sort of product is probably made in very small batches, which lessens the potential for any contamination compared to large operations. This is such utter bovine excrement that it's not even funny! sad smiley

Was that too deep for you? You honestly don't know the difference between factory farms and processing plants and artisan operations? eye rolling smiley

Are you saying there was not a salmonella outbreak in the cashew cheese or that it's ok because more people are poisoned otherwise?! Hopefully it's some third alternative that I've missed that you are trying to say and you are not a defensive paranoid lunatic.

LOL! Love it, "SueZ"! Keep them coming! smiling smiley I am saying that I believe that the cashew cheeze was either intentionally contaminated or else they just lied on this company and claimed that all these people were getting sick from it.

Bring it. Call me those names. But you appear to be revealing yourself. You're not paranoid but you knew the drill right away and hid your email address, I see...I love these people who sign up and hide their emails right away.

So the bad guys planted salmonella in vegan cheese to discredit the raw vegan lifestyle or something? Personally there is no way in hell I would buy anything perishable at a farmers market made by who knows who in in who knows what "kitchens". Anyone can call themselves an 'artisan" or a "heath expert' or whatever they want after all.

I think it's important to point out to people who are new to raw food that unlike the cooked food they are used to, raw food is more susceptible to caring bacteria and other things than cooked foods.

These problems can be easily avoided by growing your own sprouts and making your own cultured cheese that can go straight to your own fridge.

I'm a 100% raw food eater and concerned with helping others who are interested in this path. It is important for those who are new to raw foods to understand that some of the food safety 'nets',(regardless of how horrible those nets are), are no longer there and vigilance is needed.

But salmonella is transferred from birds. So my point is that like e-coli, it's not just a case of some pathogen spoiling the batch. This is directly contaminated from birds and I cry FOWL!!!! winking smiley
