Bittersweet flavors

Last night I had some wonderful wild 'indian plums' it was so great having something so unique and apart from commerical foods. It has such a complex flavor, mostly slightlybittersweet, with a lingering finish. But the season is so short. Right now most of the fruit are drying up and starting to drop on the tree. They are about 1/2 the size of a cherry, with a pit. Anyways I am so annoyed that the commercial market is geared towards overly sweet, and rather less complex flavored food.

Does anyone know of alternatives to get this bittersweet flavor, I just crave it!

And, why do most people want really sweet sweet fruit with no real flavor? It seems like growers breed up stuff to taste like it has corn syrup.
