How do you know you are getting enough nutrients????
Posted by: new2green ()

I am new to raw. Have been a vegetarian for 10 years, but have tried raw after reading a great book (12 steps to raw foods by victoria boutenko) and decided to give it a try.
LOVE IT!!! It just works for me. I was a compulsive eater. Never had a weight problem or anything, but sugar and other bad foods were my favorite!!! I was always hungry and had very low energy level.
Food is my passion, so I read all food boos I can get my hands on and a raw foods book came to my attention. I tried and haven't been hungry since. But now I'm worried I'm not getting enough nutrients. Does anybody know how I can get more info? What amount of nutrients, composition of each food etc?

i screen my stuff through fitday.com it has a part called reports and you can see where your nutrition is coming from. the breakdown tells you if you`re up to speed on the different vitamins and minerals. keep in mind that the values are from the rda for sad eaters though

Yeah, I noticed through using Fit Day that I take in much more than the RDA amount on Vitamin A and Vitamin K and much less on Selenium and Calcium.

Of course, to get enough Selenium I just eat some Brazil Nuts or Mushrooms, but I worry about the Calcium. I also did some research on Vitamin A because I can take in WAY more then the RDA suggested amount, especially when I eat carrots.
The website, [lpi.oregonstate.edu], stated a toxicity of Vitamin A can result in liver damage, hemorrage, and coma. That concerns me.

I just went through the last 4 days I inputted on fit day and noticed I was geting more calcium. The RDA is 1000 mg. One of those days I reached 1000. I had a 700, 500, and today so far 300 mg intake.

I've increased my watermelon, orange, and celery intake over the last 4 days and they seem to account for the increase in calcium.

How do you know that you were getting enough nutrients compulsively overeating vegetarian junk foods for ten years? I'm long term raw and I don't use fitday; but my blood tests show no deficiencies, and I feel good, listen to my body. Every fresh orange, carrot, or spinach leaf does not have the same amount of vitamins or minerals anyway. Eating whole foods is different than swallowing isolates.

Force the change you want to see in the world through direct, socialist democracy!

I think that concentration of toxicity from Vitamin A would require either a binge on carrots that would rupture your stomach or 1/4th a bottle of Vitamin A supplements.

I'd been eating raw for three years and not feeling the huge amount of happy energy the claims said I would. Two days after beginning to take B-12 (2,000 mcg once weekly) I felt fantastic. To get enough calcium, I eat sesame every day. I also make sure I'm getting Omegas w/hemp. Other than that, I just eat whatever I feel like and make sure I get a serving of green leafies daily.

Carrots have lots of beta carotene, which the body synthesizes to make Vitamin A. If you ingest more beta carotene than you need, the body won't synthesize it to toxic levels. Vitamin A toxicity occurs from too much of the already-synthesized version.
