Has anybody grown an avocado plant?

It's supposed to not be too difficult to do. At minimum this would make a nice houseplant I think, getting fruit would be great though. Anyone here try this?

Oh, and PS. I live in an apartment, so I'm talking container growing here.

There was a post on this recently if you do a search.

Yes, you can get it to grow; if you live in a temperate climate, the chance of it fruiting is almost zero. The chance of it flowering alone is almost zero. The leaves are pretty, though.

Thanks, just found the thread:

I just read on a list that they could be toxic to cats. So now I'm worried about that. I don't know *how* toxic - deadly toxic or sick toxix. My cats reaaaly like to eat plants. That's somewhat prevented by the catgrass I grow for them.

I could always hang it or something maybe.

Oh, sad. Better to be safe than sorry. But it's cool to even be able to SAY to have an avocado plant, so if you find a safe spot, I saw go for it.

I was just talking to somebody at work about it, and she said "Well, just bring it to work then!"

So maybe that's what I'll do. We don't have cats here! smiling smiley

Yes. It's quite easy. You don't even HAVE to use the glass of water method. I tried both - and just burying it up to its neck in dirt....fat side down....is faster than the water glass and toothpick method. Keep soil moist but not damp....and allow several weeks to start to sprout.

I think I am growing one now. It came up in one of my potted plants. My 6 year old is always planting seeds all over. I have never heard of an avocado tree in this area so I assume they don't do well here.

Just wanted to say that's cute that your child is doing that. I love it! Little treehugger! More people should be like your kid.

p.s. Plant a tree today!

p.p.s. No, wait! Have a kid that plants trees! Even better!
