Mislu: Smoking is such an evil thing, your poor sister. She is doing so much damage to herself and her children, even if the smoke doesn't hurt them, it's a terrible example to set. But unless you have ever been addicted, you can't imagine how hard it is to quit. Believe me, when you quit, the cravings are relentless, they stay with you every single waking moment and even wake you up at n

Wow Alive! You are right, and that is a BIG worry, but I have one silver lining.... My kids have amazing attitudes about healthy choices. Bet yours do too if you have any. I've tried hard not to preach this to them, I always have multiple choices at every meal (with a big family there's always a way to put a lot of different food on the table), and my kids number one choice when they want

Yey Yogamama, Gotta love those smokers in spite of themselves. My father died of lung cancer (from smoking) several years ago. My mom took care of him those last horrible months of his life. At the funeral, she discovered that the funeral home did not have a designated smoking room, and she threw a big hissy fit. (Can anyone besides me see the irony in this?) Ah well, live and let

Prism: So sorry to hear about your sister - 60 is way too young! It must have been so hard for you to see her go through that. My husband's mom died a few years ago. She had unbelievably high blood pressure, cholesterol, and was a smoker. Her weight was too high, but I don't think she would have been called obese. And she didn't want anyone saying anything about what she should an should

Rules can be so silly..... It's perfectly acceptable to smoke yourself into a state of lung cancer, It's totally legal to drink yourself into a state of cirhossis and death (probably spelled that wrong, sorry), No crime to be morbidly obese, and die from diabetic complications, But.... Holy smokes, stay away from that raw milk, you don't know what you are dealing with! (are you ser

Hi Jen! I live in BC (originally from Manitoba), and am the mother of four wonderful kids - 13-18 years old now. Sure hope to hear that raw will help you out with some of these symptoms, it's a little frightening to hear this from someone so young as you! I am also a breast cancer survivor, so I can totally emphasise with you about the lumps. It's a scary prospect! I have learned th

Hi scotgirl29, About storing smoothies for later - I wonder if a coffee thermos might be a good way to keep the smoothie from oxidizing. Even if you lose a bit of the value of the drink, you are still miles ahead of some of the other food choices you could make, I bet! Of course, if you find yourself at the soccer field and pour yourself a mug of this concoction, you will probably ra

I know that rebounding is the best thing, and I really do try, but mostly I forget to do it every day. But.... My lymphatics are a mess - I had the lymph nodes in my left armpit removed a few years ago, and went on to develop a condition called "lymphedema" - a swelling of the hand and arm. It's very aggravating, and can get quite horrible if not controlled. I have to say

Welcome... This forum is for vegan raw food, and would be a great resource for information about the non-animal part of your program. Some raw-foodists do include raw cheese, fish and even some meats, and there are probably other places you can find information about that if you choose to include it. I don't like to say I am allowed anything - I am "allowed" cheesecake and BB

Awwww, my mom didn't mean any harm when she encouraged me to smoke. You just don't realize the different attitudes she grew up with. Smoking was never considered all that bad of a thing, and she thought if I was thin and pretty I would have a much happier life. A few years ago, a friend of mine was doing a renovation on an old building, and she found an old medical book. I don't know exactl

For those of us that live in Canada (I don't know about how things are done elsewhere), I believe that all dairy products are not raw because they are required to be pasteurized. I don't think it is possible to purchase unpasturized dairy here, I don't think it is legal, although I have seen unpasteurized honey. And of course, none of the above is really vegan.

Who is the most outrageous person you know when it comes to health choices? Mine would have to be my mom. She decided when I was 13 that it was very important for me to be slim, (which I was, don't know what she was so paranoid about), and so she decided from that day forth to buy me lots of cigarettes. (boy, did she ever come from a differend era) Took me 17 years before I was able to quit

Whether or not you succeed as a vegan, raw foodist, or any other goal you set for yourself, one thing is very important to remember. Teach your daughter now, to LOVE fresh cut up fruits and vegetables. My kids ate that all their lives, and to this day, it is something they get excited about when they get home from school and find lots of snacks on the table. You don't have to be a committed v

My favorite is "Raw Food Made Easy". The recipes are straightforward and not too time-consuming, and the portions are small enough for just one or two people. I am the only raw person in my family, and I got away from raw for a while, but back at it for about a week now. I also do all the food preparation, so I continue to make all my family's favorite cooked food recipes and then

Since I live in Canada, I don't have to pay for my doctor appointments at my medical doctor, but I do have to pay to see my naturopath, my homeopath, my Chinese medicine doctor and any other alternatives. It adds up to quite a lot, but after going through a major health crisis, it's cheap compared to losing my health. (Some stuff can be claimed on my tax return, which helps a bit). Now don't

My medical doctor checks my blood every year, and the results last time were "perfect, perfect perfect" according to him. But what does that mean? They found nothing wrong, so does that mean everything is right? So I went to the naturopath, and had him do a blood test. He had a lot to say, and gave me several bits of advice to optimize my health. I will repeat this comparison in

All the advice on this thread is excellent, but the most important thing to remember is that when a person receives the diagnosis of cancer, they are already bombarded with so much information, you just cannot imagine unless you have been through the process. And they have no other choice than to take all that information and make life altering decisions, with very little time to really think it

I would really love to hear how this goes for you. I don't know much about thyroid, but I had estrogen-positive breast cancer a few years ago. The similarity is that I am supposed to believe that estrogen was part of the problem, and it's more or less my enemy now, so now I take drugs (tamoxifen) to interfere with that. This doesn't seem right or logical to me, because I am not old enough to

One day while watching my thirteen year old son wolf down his food, barely chewing a thing, I chirped - "Ever heard of mastication?". At which point he spit everything all over the table, fell off his chair and laughed himself silly. Evidently, there is something hilareous about a mom saying a word that sounds so much like another hilareous word to a person of a certain age! Nice t

I am so impressed with this thread. Most people are blissfully unaware of their lymphatic system, and have no idea how to maintain it or even the fact that it is so very critical. It is very important - I found out the hard way - I had the lymph nodes in my left armpit removed when I had breast cancer, and subsequentally developed a condition called lymphedema - do an images search on the inter

Thank you for all the kind thoughts. You are right on the money Gosia! What exactly is the missing link? Obviously, something in my world isn't right. They used to say all sorts of vague things to people when they got lung cancer, until one day they found the connection to smoking, and bingo, now we know. I think this is the same thing. It could be anything, even something I am still do

Can people with a healthy lifestyle get cancer? Well, I stopped smoking in my 20's (was an occasional smoker before that), and became a vegetarian. Went to the gym regularly and spent a lot of time outdoors. Became a vegetarian around that time - vegan much of the time, but not all the time, and not always raw. Had four kids, a reasonably happy marriage. Some money stress, but not really m

Hi Mairi! I am Canadian too, and I have heard of the thermal imaging. I don't think it is easily available here yet. Too bad the money stuff gets in the way of common sense so much of the time. You are right, the test is not yet covered by our health care, which really isn't very logical. When I had active breast cancer, I was given three chemotherapy drugs. I only remember the price ta

Pretty controversial! When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, the mammogram showed my tumor (3 cm) crystal clear. It was surprising how well it showed up, because I was only 40 and mammogram readings are a lot easier on women over 50 - less dense tissue. I found a dimple, but there was a lump there - my doctor felt it even though I couldn't. So the mammogram can be a really good thing if

Good thoughts, "Alive". Unfortunately, I have found that the cancer support groups aren't really the best thing for me, at least not at this time. The only times I attended were shortly after I was diagnosed, when I was still having a lot of trouble wrapping my head around the whole idea that this could actually happen to me, and worse yet, all the chemotherapy stuff I was going to

I am not super knowledgable about diabetes - don't know anyone who has it, but my sister-in-law, who has been somewhat overweight for years was recently told that she is "pre-diabetic". She also told me that this is quite normal for someone in her 50's who has been overweight for a long period of time and that they are going to monitor this to see if anything changes. I am shocked b

Came across this article in the Canadian news. If a low fat vegan diet is this powerful, just imagine how good a raw vegan diet is. (Yes, I do know that there is information out there about raw vegan and diabetes, but I haven't seen much about it in anything mainstream like this!) I wonder how many people who are newly diagnosed with diabetes are told about this!! It would sure be gre

It's a horrible tragic, unbelievably sad fact that every day, a lot of people, of all ages, shapes and sizes have to face this difficult decision. Chemotherapy is a nightmare. It's a terrible thing when it goes really well, and I can't imagine how it must be when it goes poorly. But it does save lives. Not always, but sometimes, and it's hard to argue that. I can see how the judge might ha

What a wonderful response from you, "Alive!"! Your thoughts are so beautiful. I think I might have made things sound different that they really are in my previous posting. I am actually very good at the gratitude thing. I have four wonderful kids, and every moment I get to spend with them is a treasure to me. I still think my husband is wonderful after 21 years of marriage, and t
