Karennd... I would beg to differ on the reference to us not being so different from cows... since they have an entirely different digestive system then we do... I would say we are more like the horse..or the pig... which has a more closely related digestive track... if we are going to compare ourselves to livestock animals anyway.... and thanks for the weblink... elayne

Fresh.. you're right certain plants develop toxicity due to climatic conditions and seasonal changes.. For example oat hay, russian thistle and other forages can develop nitrate toxicity levels. This generally occurs in drought conditions when the plant uptakes too much nitrates. but once again, if the cow is able to supplement their diet and eat other forage to offset the high levels of nit

Karennd.. you are so right cows look at plants as a virtual smorgasboard and consume many different types of plants depending on availability and palatability. Additionally, as lignin contant increases in plants and protein levels decline cattle have been known to switch to shrubs to obtain their needed nutrients. Also some cattle will even develop a liking for plants that prove very poisonous to

I too love raw corn.. especially the smaller ears that are a sweet white corn variety! The corn out here is all gone though... which makes me sad... The last few ears I had that got a bit too over ripe I blended in my food processor and dehydrated them into chips.. I hated to waste them.... I then had homemade salsa and corn chips as a treat for several weeks. Elayne

Sciencegal.. Thanks for a very enlightening (no pun intended) post. I learned so much! I would love to know what amount of sun exposure I would need for my location and skin type. I would be classified a Type 2 and shortly will be moving to Davenport WA with a latitude of 47 degrees. Elayne

Jono... Hemp just this summer has been legalized to be grown commercially here in the US. A couple of months ago the USDA approved certain states could grow hemp, North Dakota being one of them. (I live in ND) However, the farmer has to go through a lot of red tape to do so and as previously mentioned it is highly regulated Elayne

Thanks to everyone for all your support and suggestions... I decided last night that it was stupid for me to try and fast and stop coffee at the same time. But, I did find the excruciating headache took away any hunger pains. Yesterday evening I drank warm water and also had an avocado with some homemade salsa. That fat seemed to help with the headache... I will get through.. and darn it

Thanks David for your encouraging words... and your honesty.. about the red bull drinks.. Yikes.. those are powerful stuff...I can't imagine coming off those.. I've actually cut my coffee consumption down a lot in preparation for going cold turkey.. I used to drink one cup of coffee that had enough grounds in it to make 10 cups of coffee..That one cup would give me the shakes so bad and I foun

thanks Peony.... Gosh I guess I've never gone off caffeine before without taking aspirin or ibuprofen... Makes me realize how much of addiction this stuff is. I just hope the headache is not as intense tomorrow... and what's weird too.. I've been drinking quite a bit of water but instead of feeling hydrated I am feeling dehydrated.. and my fingers are really swollen as I am retaining water...

Oh my gosh deegarry... that same thing happens to me in the grocery store.. Young checkers have asked about the following veggies: broccoli, cauliflower, avocados, cilantro and parsley. I could understand about some of the more obscure veggies such as kale or turnip greens etc... Makes you wonder what their folks feed them at home... elayne

I've been reading about all the green smoothies.. and decided I wanted to try a few recipes... They sound so yummy... But my local grocery doesn't sell spinach, kale or even fresh parsley. Yes I am rather limited to what I can find to buy... I can only buy either iceberg lettuce or the gross chemical treating nasty lettuce in a bag. (which I won't buy) Because of this I've not gone organic

I have a dehumidifier and use the water collected from that for my dogs.. but is this like distilled water and devoid of minerals?? My water comes from a very deep well. But there are lots of minerals in the water, so I have a carbon filter as it comes into the house and also a reverse osmosis water system under the sink. My little dog gets that water, and I drink it too. Although, I di

Pampam... Thank you for your kind words and prayers.. and yes I think there is a lot of fear there, which of course my father holds in... and I think we tend to rely way too much on Dr's sorta like Gods... Mschigyrl... I too have RA (self diagnosis from symptoms) My mom has suffered with RA since she was in her late 40's. I am 51 and just started showing symptoms last fall... I've been mostly raw for the last (almost) 3 months. Started my raw journey around July 1. However, I have had deviations here and there with cooked food. Some healthy some not so healthy cooked food choices. My RA s

On my raw journey, which started right around the first of July, initially I lost 15 lbs and by my calculations I could stand to lose anywhere from another 15 to 40 lbs and be within my correct BMI. For the last month and a half I've lost nothing.. Well, I can't say that I will lose a lb and then be up a lb... Although my fat seems to be moving around and changing and in some areas of my body I'v

Hello to all.... I thought it best I start to keep track of my raw journey. I've kept a sporadic journal at home, but went on vacation for 3 weeks in August and haven't picked back up the habit of journaling. So, thought I'd do it here for added support and feedback. Especially after yesterday and last nights detox symptoms. Since the beginning of July I've been 50 to 95% raw depending on w

Hello to all.... I know over the couple months I've been here there have been some favorite books recommended. But alas, when I go back and try to find these posts I am unable to do so. Therefore, I was thinking it would be great to have a "favorite book" thread where people could post their favorite book titles and why they recommend that particular book. Books on raw foods and fas
