I live in south Florida. I've used only baking soda mixed with water as shampoo for about 3 years now. I use a diluted apple cider vinegar (the cheep stuff at the grocery, not the expensive stuff with the mother of vinegar) as a rinse after washing my hair. No, not smelling like a salad! Hahaha! Just rinse well, and there is no smell. My very long hair is shiny and clean and free of stinky pe

Thanks for all the feedback! Funny you all should mention it: I'm heading out to the Hippocrates center this Thursday for their open house. I had heard about the theory re: not mixing fruits and veggies, but that was not the reason for my question. Actually, I was just looking to explore something different. I LOLd after reading the comment about fruitless green smoothies being soup! Hahah

I love my green smoothies. I always use at least 1 banana and 1 other fruit in my smoothies, along with loads of leafy greens (5 cups minimum) and sometimes other veggies (celery, carrot, beet, etc.) But I'm leaning toward trying to leave out the fruit. The first time I did this, it was difficult to enjoy. I know there is a "something" that makes savory (as opposed to sweet) smoothie

I have a Jack LaLayne juicer, its great, but getting cobwebs lately; I juiced fatithfully for a few weeks, then sporadically for a few months, then it was consigned to the cabinet. On the other hand, my Vitamix lives on my counter, and I rev that sonofagun to the max every morning at around 6:30, making my daily meal(s)-breakfast, lunch and appetizer before dinner. I also have a terrific T

Love the "wheatgrass" dialog! I grew my own, and used the hand-crank juicer, and it was good. But I'm such a committed Vitamix person, (GO GREEN SMOOTHIES! YEAH!) it made me think that perhaps just adding the grass to the vitamix was easier, and hey, it couldn't hurt. So I did that for a while, but the mold continued to attack my crops, so I don't grow it or use it at all anym

Wow, such great ideas! I knew this was the place to get information. I love the idea of growing sprouts in school (easy peasy lemon squeezy!) and showing the whole plant (beets are easy, sometimes spinach, bet I could find some space on campus to plant stuff...) I'll be posting back with more info as it develops. Hope some teachers come, too! Much thanks, Jackie

I'm a math teacher at a middle school in Lake Worth,FL and I'd like to start an after-school "Green Smoothie" club. My students see me with my stainless thermos of "smoothies" every day, and there may be interest in actually discussing nutrition, leafy greens, and "green smoothies" at the school. I won't know until I set it up and try. Besides basic nutrition and

The best thing(s) I ate in 2006 were green smoothies. Absolutely. And for 2007: At about 1am, my green smoothie was: 2 c spinach 1 stalk celery 1 large carrot .5 oz hempseed .5 tsp flaxseed .5 large banana 1/16 medium cantaloupe .5 c parsley 1 brazil nut .5 tsp cinnamon ice water Yummie! Now at 9:40 a.m. I am having another one, almost just like the last one, except I ha

I'm all for SIMPLE! I never got caught up in all that dehydrator/pate/multistep food prep stuff, because I'm basically totally anti-kitchen and lazy as can be where it concerns food prep. Saw too many episodes of "Hell's Kitchen" to want to mess with food! It kills me to make my favorite chopped salad! Takes FOREVER to chop tomatoes, cukes, lettuce, onions...but it does last a whi

I like the seeded grapes, mangoes, red bell peppers, English cukes, avocados, tomatoes, sweet onions (when they have them), kiwis, and large containers of medjool dates; they even had fresh black mission figs this year - I bought a bunch of them. Wowza! I also like the pears, fuji apples and monster pineapple. Not crazy about the pale looking romaine, or the bananas that rot instead of rip

Just use whole hemp seeds, forget making it into anything, IMHO. They are delicious plain. Or put them into your green smoothie. Or on your salad. One ounce (about 2 tbls) is 15 grams of protein. (!) I get them from Galaxy, in a 5 pound pail. I keep them in the freezer, taking out about 2 weeks worth at a time and keeping that smaller portion in the refrig until I use them up. I used to

I agree totally: a green smoothie lasts, no hunger, and I've been splitting them. Half I drink at around 6:30 before work, the other half goes into my thermos for lunch. No problems until I step into the house. I'll actually have like 3 meals from 5:00 to 9:30 pm! That's just silly! For now, I don't really miss the grains. I rarely ate them until recently when I got into the grains trap and

Thanks for all your ideas! After thinking on my predicament, I also believe that I'm one of those people who crave more grains after eating them (the downward spiral...) and it's best to just stay totally away from them. I do not have a problem with sprouts, but any bread-type food is just a trap for me. I have avoided it totally for 4 days now, and am not looking for food after I've just

Maybe it's just because it's winter. Maybe I'm stressed, who knows...that's not the important part. The problem is I'm hungry a lot; trying to get back into excercise and 100% raw, but having a problem because I'm feeling hungry, even if I've just eaten! Sounds like a mind game, but meanwhile, what are some suggestions for natural appetite suppressants? I do not drink any beverage with

I love eating pomegranates! I recently got a box of 6 from Costco, and they are huge. One pom is about 4 servings!! I had forgotten how pom juice stains my fingernails, making purple marks. It looks like I've been digging in the dirt or something. It's pretty awful. Any ideas on how to get this staining off my fingernails without resorting to bleach? If bleach even works...this is mighty po

Here's my two cents: I prefer hemp seed which has been shelled and not turned into powder. That's just another level of processing. To ship it from Canada or the US in 5 pound buckets would be so expensive, I don't think I'd do it. I'd stick to adding nuts (almonds, walnuts, etc. whatever's local) and see how that works re: protein for you. And, even though it's not raw, there're some dec

I take it you are "down under" from me <--florida USA. I have noticed that my average temp daily is not 98.6, more like 97.5 and some days I'll be pretty cold, and my temp will be 96.5. Brrrr! It's not terrible because it's summer here, and hot. But I can imagine how upsetting it would be if it was winter. Ah, winter in like New York, not here in FLA. My joint issues, which I

Just came back from my friend's home. She has 3 great coconut trees, doesn't eat the coconuts and asked me if I'd "do her a favor" and take them. OH YEAH BABY! I now have a mess o' coconuts, can't wait to machete one o' those guys for tonight's smoothie.... YUMMIE!

I have found that drinking the ginger tea mentioned above, or adding fresh ginger to my smoothie in the morning keeps joint pain away for me. I used to make up a half gallon of very strong ginger tea, and keep it in the refrigerator. I'd add it to herbal tea, or juice - gives it a big ZING and is very refreshing. Plus the joint pain went away. It might help!

Hi! Saw this post and found it interesting that I have been doing something similar lately. I have a huge smoothie in the morning, with a salad (no overt oils for me, BTW) or a quart of fresh juice (tomato, cuke, celery, carrot, apple, beet, stuff like that) about 4 hours later, and a mid-snack maybe 2 hours later of pumpkin seeds and one brazil nut. This really does the trick, and sinc

That's good news about the raw dairy helping stop the hair loss. I've seen quite a few posts on another site about the hair loss, but no real "cures". I use evening primrose caps, and that helped a bit, but my particular problem is due to medication for my thyroid. What a hassle! Anyway, about the fat, there's a few different opinions about that on the boards, too. Personally, aft

Isn't this interesting to all you watermelon fans: WASHINGTON (Reuters) - That ice-cold watermelon may be refreshing, but it can be less nutritious than watermelon served at room temperature, U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists reported on Wednesday. Watermelons stored at room temperature deliver more nutrients than refrigerated or freshly picked melons, they reported i

Well, I guess it depends on what you put into it. Sometimes I add raw red beets to my smoothies, and then it becomes obvious how long it took if you catch my drift. You may want to try that method to answer your question! Good luck!

Thanks for the quote, Gram. It all seems to work together, every little thing becomes vitally important to our health. Just cut out one nutrient, and ....BLAMMO.... we're out of whack. Shep, glad to be of service! Isn't it fun learning all this stuff? Who'd a thunk it? Hahaha!

I personally found that adding evening primrose oil to my daily intake helped a lot. I think any omega-3 rich sources will help. I've had the hair loss problem due to medication, and I was not calm about it. Keeping my fat intake up to about 25-30% (including the evening primrose oil, which is heavy on the GLA) has helped, but has not cured the problem for me. Coconuts are also a part of m

Hi Gramlin, Actually, the four most abundant items are the sodium vs potassium and calcium vs potassium arenas. Yes, you are correct, magnesium is very important in our diets; in fact, many recent studies show magnesium deficiencies are linked to all kinds of ill health. Being on a mostly raw diet seems to have increased my magnesium levels to an average of 600 mg daily. If you review
