I read your post with interest... I have had the same thoughts, too, and my conclusion is: we can get wonderous effects of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins from a wide variety of raw fruits and veggies. I don't believe any one "superfruit" can do something that a combination of others can't do. All the minute benefits of each fruit/veggie have not even been discovered yet, IMHO

I read somewhere that earlier people had ratios of 12 or more potassium to sodium, and that is healthy. This of course was before processed foods with unrealistically long shelf lives. Eating raw, no processed foods, gives you higher potassium than sodium naturally and it's not a bad thing. The bad part is when you eat processed foods with mega sodium doses - which is easy to do since sodiu

Rawdev, Can you provide any additional information re: saliva tests for TSH, T3, T4, FT3, FT4, DHEA, Cortisol/Adrenal? Is this something administered by a doctor or that I do myself. If doing it myself, how do I authenticate the results to discuss with doctor? My doc is pretty cool, he thinks I'm a bit over the top with the mostly raw, but we work together on my health issues. I don'

Hi! Well, I'll keep you posted as "the journey" continues... Like a soap opera: "As the Thyroid Heals..." Hahaha! I'm also thinking seriously about rejoining a gym, just because an extra hour of weight lifting per day can't hurt, may be the answer I'm seeking. I'll make my decision this weekend about that. Plus it's SO hot out, I rarely take my 5 mile walks anymor

Saw this got bumped up, so I thought I'd report in. In the interim from my last post I went for my thyroid checkup, and sadly, my TSH is up from .18 to 5.1. Yeah, I know the TSH reading isn't the most important thing, it's really the symptoms that are important, but it just indicates that for some reason my body keeps adjusting upward, requiring more of the medication. I haven't increas

I'm sort of averaging around 60% carbs, 25% fats, 15% protein. This comes out of about 1800 calories daily. Of course, these numbers change a bit depending on avocados purchased (usually 6 at a time, so they are present in my diet every day until they're gone), my stock of fresh leafy greens (sometimes I just run out of them! Then I eat more fruit), and what special fruits are in season, like fig

Yeah, I was wondering about that foot bath thing too. I discussed it with my son, he's a real skeptic, and he said, "Remember the time we played with the ear candle and how silly that was?" and right there I figured I'll keep my $30 bucks and buy more leafy greens with it. (This references the fact that we put an ear candle in a small bottle, like a pill bottle, and lit it up. Th

I agree with you, vegangoddess. When I first started this raw journey, I was obsessed. There was so much information, so many theories, so many "rules", it became a major portion of my life. Now that I've figured it out for myself (which is different for every person) it's not such an overwhelming consumer of my time/lifestyle. I'm sort of on automatic where it comes to food. I kn

In my humble opinion, there are NO RULES for smoothies! Oranges and kale, lemon and spinach, grapefruit and beet greens, IT'S ALL GOOD! Strawberries, coconut water plus some coconut meat, papaya, watercress, spinach with flaxseed, ginger and cinnamon, ZOWIE! Cantaloupe seeds plus one eighth melon, apple, banana, kale, 1/4 raw beet, celery, parsley, ginger and cinnamon, FANTASTICO! Ban

Hi Raw Guy, When I started this lifestyle change, it all began with a prep for a colonoscopy (i.e. that drink they require that cleans out your colon the day before the colonoscopy). After that, I juiced veggies (not green leafy parts, the stem parts of kale, beet, etc.) like cucumber, celery, carrot, apple, fresh ginger in small amounts, tomato, sweet potato, anything that would juice but

This is very interesting information! I tend to not get sick, and I feel great, so I guess I'm right on the pH I'm supposed to be on. I checked the lists of various alkaline and acid foods, and it looks like I'm getting a good balance of both, although more heavily weighted on the alkaline side. I'm so glad you were able to turn around that imbalance, Piano Gal! Wow. More to think about.

This whole acid alkaline thing is very interesting to me. Personally, I noticed that once I switched to high raw, my agression, emotional highs and lows, anger, "weepy" moments, etc. all WENT AWAY... ...and have not returned in over a year - the exact time period when I stopped eating processed foods, cooked foods, and concentrated on raw, living foods (no meat, few if any grain

For a great resource, go here to Nutritiondata.com: Here, you can search for foods highest in "dietary fiber" and you can search by group (i.e. vegetables, fruits, nuts, etc. whatever category you want). It will return lists to you ranked by most dietary fiber to least in whatever category you've picked. It's easy to use, fast, and will answer all your questions! Have a gre

Just finished reading the link posted by Lazar to interview with Dr. Udo Erasmus. Wow, he's terrific! What he said makes sense: if you don't have a good starting point (re: oils) your body can't make what it needs. Well, since my HDL numbers are up to where they should be (per the range on the test results) maybe I am at that point where it's just maintenance now. That would be great! W

It's a sad fact: LIFE EATS LIFE. I do empathize with the statements made above about no creature giving up its life to support ours, and that we should strive to be nonviolent. It is a pure and knowledgeable path. It's also contradictory to the facts of Life: everything on this planet is food for something else. And except for scavengers, living food sources are what is consumed. I wish

Hi Yogamama, After being mostly raw for over a year, I found that my HDL (the good stuff) went WAY down, to about 30, as well as triglycerides and other cholesterol, due mainly to the raw foods. It's just something that happens when you eat a raw food diet. There was a study on it that I printed for my doctor, but I can't find the link. Anyway... However, having super low HDL is not a good

I'm with Bryan: if eating raw, getting good water, enough sunshine, exercise and sleep daily isn't enough, well, that 62 grams of daily fiber should do the trick! Colonics is just so - invasive! I'm not saying that if someone is totally screwed up healthwise that it should not be part of the arsenal of methods to help bring someone back to health, but other than something totally severe, I'd s

Absolutely delicious pickled! Down here, I see piles of green tomatoes dumped in the fields for the cattle. They seem to thrive on them. Something for everyone! I do like the idea of just letting them turn red, though. Easier than that you can't get!

When I adopted this lifestyle, I found just the opposite of constipation. But I started right in 100% raw, with juices and then just veggies and fruits, with few nuts and no grains whatsoever. Unless they're sprouted. In fact, I had to increase my intake of avocados and bananas to slow it all down, if you get my drift. Everything worked out just fine, I'm still loving the way I feel on this

Great article! I've read in the past that a lot of Americans, eating mostly processed and "fast" food, can get up to 10,000 mg salt daily!!! And it's not the "good" salt like that found in celery. Well, go figure. People won't listen until they're in major agony, then maybe they'll be open to exchanging their bad eating habits for good ones. Unless they buy into the

Hi Alex, Thanks for your comments! I know you are correct about the pool water, but unfortunately that is not a variable which will be changed any time soon. I loved the recommendation about drinking water with lemon. I do that when eating out, but not usually at home. And I do have lemons here, usually I squeeze 1/2 lemon onto a salad occasionally. Or add them to a heavily green smoothi

This is something weird: after not having any problems with dry skin, now I noticed it on my arms and legs. I am very high raw, have been for over 1 year. I eat lots of variety of veggies, fruits, drink enough water daily, get some sunshine early in the day, etc. I started noticing the dry skin when I cut back my fats intake from average 32 or so % down to 23 or so %. So, I figured I

I noticed it's almost impossible to get angry anymore. I've gotten pretty mellow, along with focused, clear headed, pain gone...it's great! I've gotten very strong nails and my hair and nails both grow pretty darn fast - I attribute that to the silicon based foods: cucumber, tomatoes (skin), red peppers (skin) that I've been eating a lot of in the past months. It's not overnight, but you no

I've heard good things about borage oil, too. I imagine it will do the trick, just as if not better than evening primrose oil. I'll try it when this batch of epo runs out. I lately have been eating one fresh coconut daily. Yummie! I prefer it to the oil straight up. In fact, that's how I feel about all oils now, including hemp. Rather have the "real" complete thing. I need to go t

Wow, that IS good news! My thyroid is not functioning, because I was taking some medication that made my body think my thyroid was an invader, and it attacked it and that's the end of that. So I'm taking 3 grains of (probably) the same natural thyroid stuff, and hoping that being raw will make my body accept it back again, but so far, no luck at all. At least my hair stopped falling out

I use the Himalayan pink salt, specifically for the watercure process. I found that my potassium intake is pretty high, so to balance it out I add some Himalayan salt to water and drink it daily. I also found that the desire to add salt to foods has faded away over time, as mentioned above. Using salt as part of the watercure, I look at it like just another way to get trace minerals into m

I now have a Jack LaLayne juicer, its wonderful, about $100, cleanup is not simple but not terrible. All juicer cleanup is a pain. PROS: super wide feeder chute so I don't have a ton of prep on the veggies and fruits before juicing has a large trap in back to catch the pulp - just put one of those plastic produce bags in the trap to catch all the pulp and it makes that end of the cleanup a
