* Juices: Entire books have been written about making delectable home juices, and you'll find a lot of discussions here about the subject. Enjoy carrot/wheatgrass juice, or juice a whole watermelon (I juice the rind right along with the fruit). Discard the dry pulp or use it for another recipe. * Nut milks: Soak 1 cup of raw nuts (almonds and walnuts are common) for a few hours or overnight. P

The current exchange rate: 1 British pound = 2.0701 U.S. dollars If the Vitamix is £575 then that's $1,190.31. That's way, way too much, unless the deal includes every conceivable add-on.

That "motor-oil and vaseline" comment sounds familiar. I once brought a brazil-broccoli mash from Ani Phyo's book (broccoli, brazil nuts, garlic, salt) to work and while I was eating I became aware that a few of my coworkers were moving around trying to track down the smell. They were convinced there was a gas leak until they figured out they were smelling my lunch. A couple of month

Gosh. I've been eating 4-5 apples every week day for nearly a month since they came into season locally. They haven't given me any trouble, but I have read that apples are particularly cleansing for the digestive tract.

ferg- Thanks so much! I've been looking for a good recipe to bring cranberry sauce to my family's Thanksgiving dinner, and this one looks delicious.

For all kinds of dehydrated things, I've found the best way to get a good crunch is to start with pieces as thin as you can without falling apart. This has held true for the raw tortilla chips I've made (spread as thinly as possible on the dehydrator sheet), and the eggplant marinara chips I made this past weekend (use very thin slices). Since dehydrated foods are not really the best raw foods yo

You might try to analyze what it is about Cheetohs that you crave. Is it the crunch? the salt? the cheese? the experience of eating mindlessly? If you're only craving one or two of these things then you might be able to find a solution which satisfies without the Herculean task of trying to recreate a raw Cheetoh. You can make all kinds of crunchy snacks with a dehydrator, but approximating ch

Hey Flanny, I live in Ithaca, and it sounds like you missed Ithaca's raw food restaurant while you were in town. Next time you're in town you should look up "Everything Wellness" in downtown: . It's rare for a town as small as ours to have a raw restaurant. -Frances

Z Spencer, You could make a raw good chocolate milk with almond milk, but once it's as hot as hot chocolate it will no longer be remotely raw. If it's the hot beverage you crave, you're out of luck making it raw. You could enjoy a non-dairy hot chocolate anyway, knowing it isn't raw, or try a hot herbal tea or even just hot water instead. If it's the chocolate beverage you want and don't need

This thread makes me feel grateful for the co-workers I have. They're usually quite nice and curious about how I'm eating. Some of them seem to feel pity for me at work events when they're eating their chicken or vegetarian options while I make do with just the salad. This is understandable though, since the salads at work luncheons always suck. I occasionally get odd comments like, "I wish

I've been reading here about everyone's experiences with their high speed blenders and becoming more and more certain that I want one myself. One of the things that interested me in the Waring was that multiple people reported it being quieter than the Vitamix. I finally talked my credit card company into letting me use years' worth of my card "points" to pay for a new Waring MX1000XT.

I think it's the tahini and garlic that really define the flavor of good hummus, not the chickpeas. I've really enjoyed Matt Amsden's raw zucchini hummus the few times I've made it. I usually reduce the tahini a little and increase the garlic.

Cabbage is nice and peppery raw. If you have ever been in the habit of eating cole slaw, it shouldn't be as unfamiliar to you as the other raw veggies you mentioned. I don't really find it interesting by itself, but raw vegan cole slaw can be really good, and if you like fermented foods sauerkraut or kimchi might suit your tastes (I prefer kimchi, myself). I've made only one recipe so far with

Agave nectar should be labeled "raw", otherwise it's almost certainly not raw. I've heard it said that the "raw" agave nectar is still not truly raw, and I'm not certain of the truth of this. I use it, but not often or in large quantities. I've never pressed my own oils. The only ones I use are coconut oil/butter and olive oil. The coconut oil I buy is labeled "raw&quo

There have been several reports compiled of the types of produce that are likely to have the highest and lowest levels of pesticide residue when grown conventionally. When money is tight, some things are much safer to buy conventional, like asparagus. Other things are probably best avoided if organic is unavailable or too expensive, like bell peppers.

I own one set of PJs, which I use when traveling - sharing hotel rooms with co-workers, staying with family, etc... At home I pile on extra blankets in the winter, though. anaken- I agree with what you're saying about the natural and organic clothing lines. They always seem to be either silly looking or like workout clothing. I don't prefer to go to the office in clothing that looks like I'm a

The only really good thing I know about microwaves that they are quite energy efficient compared to conventional ovens. Use a regular oven and you are heating a lot of metal unnecessarily! Since there isn't much damage you can do to water anyway, I see absolutely no reason why you shouldn't heat water in a microwave. That said, I do drink hot tea from time to time and almost always heat the water

A month ago I took off the end of a finger with my Mandoline Slicer. Thankfully, I wasn't making thick slices! It's mostly healed up now. I do find I get more cuts, but fewer burns these days. I've spent so many hours in the kitchen with a knife over the years that I almost never cut my fingers with a regular knife. For mincing you might try a manual food chopper like this one: It's fast a

This question has been bothering me for a while. Detox symptoms can be so varied in type and intensity, that how do you ever know whether your symptoms are detox? My feeling is that it's important to ask yourself what you would do in each case. A lot of the time the answer is the same. For cold-like symptoms I usually try to get extra rest, drink fluids, and take care of myself. If the symptom

One of the questions they asked me today was, "Have you ever had sex with someone who was born in Africa?" So... is that an automatic disqualification? Would they have sent me away? They didn't even ask me whether I was born in Africa myself. I'm white and have an American accent, but neither proves anything. One of the first questions was "You're female, right?" I got the imp

I'm really uncomfortable about public pools. Just being near them I get such a string bleach smell I don't want to get in. Some pools use less intense chemicals and/or smaller quantities, especially privately owned pools that have to deal with fewer swimmers. I occasionally swim in this type, but the opportunity doesn't come up much because I don't have any good friends with swimming pools. I

Sapphire- You could try calling your local donation center (mine is at the VFW) and ask about the specific cancer and drugs that might be of concern. They might be able to tell you immediately whether it's worth your time to come by. Most places like you to call and make appointments anyway (though they don't require it), so they probably have a phone number on their web site.

Okay, I just went and donated blood. Thanks, blue_sky, for bringing it up! When I was there they asked me a bunch of questions I hadn't expected. They had a whole list of drugs and asked me if I had ever taken any of them. (Sorry, I should have photographed the list - I certainly don't remember it all.) I don't know what they would have said if I'd said yes to any of that. They tested my iron lev

History of cancer doesn't make you ineligible to give blood. My local red cross provides these reasons you might not be able to give blood: * You are currently ill (cold, flu, sore throat, hepatitis B or C). * You weigh less than 110 pounds. * You are currently pregnant. * You have arthritis. * You have traveled to certain countries where you might have contracted certain diseases

The RAWvolution "Come Bite the Apple Cookies" are contain apple, almond, raisins, agave nectar and cinnamon. They call for about 24 hours in a dehydrator, but a 100 degree oven should work. Does that sound good? Also... if you aren't already, I'd suggest including a little beet juice in your vampire blood soup to give it a darker, bloodier look.

It's weird. There are a few very blatantly cooked ingredients which I see frequently in raw food recipes. Nutritional yeast and maple syrup seem to be the most common.

I've got a crab apple tree, and decided to juice some apples this morning. The apples on my tree are small, irregular, and very tart. I couldn't get that many of them without getting out the big ladder, so it was a small take. There's no time for messing around with the big ladder on a work day morning! You can't really see scale from the photo, but the biggest of them are only about two inches a
