-- How long have you been a raw foodist? 7-8 months -- What was the last cooked meal you had? Just last Friday. My parents offered to take me out to dinner to celebrate my purchase of a house (I'm very excited), but my mother was not willing to go the the raw food place. In fairness, our raw food restaurant is a hole-in-the-wall with a very limited menu, but at least we have one! She is

I think you're right, Azura Skye, but the rutabaga I'm familiar with isn't orange. It's usually white and purple on the outside. This one has more purple and less white than what I think of as average, but it's a good example: I did a google image search and it looks like they can differ in appearance: Anyway, I've never been a huge fan of raw rutabaga, but like a lot of other turnip-li

I haven't tried the recipe, but my guess is that you'd do okay to grind the soaked nuts in a food processor. The texture of the loaf might end up being different, or I could be wrong and the difference in texture would make the whole thing fall apart!

Pineapple can be pretty acidic if it's picked un-ripe, which it usually is when it's going to be shipped some distance. That may be what you experienced. They're usually not that bad, though. My mouth doesn't usually start hurting from an acidic pineapple until I've been chopping away for a while.

Yes, I'm in America (the Northeast). We do sometimes have orange turnips, but I don't know whether they're the same thing. I'm most likely to chop, grate or shred them into a green salad. angie- Have you tried sprouting your quinoa?

If you have the space in your freezer, a great thing to do is go to a u-pick berry place. I like to spend an afternoon picking, then come home with several gallons of blueberries. Wash them all, and put them in separate one quart freezer bags. Come midwinter they're great to have handy.

stoner- Yes, that's sprouting, but sprouting seeds and nuts takes a little more effort. is a really good site to get started with. It's a store, but they have so much information posted you could spend hours reading and learning how to sprout. When the garlic and onion begin to sprout you may find that part of the inside of the bulbs begin to go bad. I use them as long as they look okay i

When you say "swede" do you mean this stuff? I've always known it as "chard" or "swiss chard". It's good shredded in all kinds of salads, and I often include it in my green smoothies.

dalyrm, Good luck with Veganomicon! I have Isa's earlier cookbook "Vegan with a Vengeance" and it's one of my favorites. I didn't buy Veganomicon when it came out because I was doing raw by then, but I bet it's wonderful!

Here's a good one: Creamy Curry Dressing 1 tbsp. curry powder 3 red apples, cored 1 clove garlic 1 tbsp. fresh ginger 3 tbsp. olive oil juice of 1 lemon (~ 2 tbsp.) 1/2 tsp. sea salt I blended all that up in a high speed blender. The red apple peel got nicely pulverized and added to the nice curry color of the dressing. I originally adapted this from a raw food cookbook (I think Ani

My co-op has fresh turmeric root now too... something I have never seen in real life before. After Greg's praise of it in his smoothies I bought some. It's strong. I put about a teaspoon into a quart and a half of smoothie and spent the whole time I was drinking it trying to decide how I felt about it. I decided that it was more good than bad, but it was a near thing. ("Fresh" is a rela

It's true that you will probably want to drink smoothies slower because they are thicker, but even with juice it's healthy to take your time. You can chug your juice, but I wouldn't recommend it. When I said you could drink more juiced than you can eat blended, that isn't really what I meant. I meant that you could juice an entire bunch of greens and make a manageable glass of super-healthy, s

If you blend your greens you keep all the fiber in your food and eat it. This can be great because it isn't wasteful and because fiber is really, really important. On the other hand, you can't consume as many greens if you eat all the fiber. Separating the juice gives you an extra concentration of nutrition. Neither is always better, and it depends a lot on your goals. Juice is really great for h

I made a banana coconut cream pie once that was delicious. I don't have all the details with me at work, but for the filling I basically food-processed the meat from some young coconuts and some bananas into a filling which went into an almond-based pie shell. The filling also had some pitted dates (well-soaked for blend-ability) and maybe some vanilla. If you haven't made a nut-based pie crus

Also... most nuts will benefit from refrigeration, but people differ about that. If you have the room, why not? I've heard that apples give off a chemical that can speed the aging of carrots. I haven't experienced this myself, but as I said above carrots are prone to dehydrate and get floppy in the fridge if not sealed up, so I always keep mine in plastic bags. I never refrigerate bananas,

Most vegetables can be damaged by the defroster in most modern refrigerators. The defroster prevents frost by limiting the air moisture in the fridge. This action can quickly wilt green leaves of all kinds, celery, and carrots. If you have crisper drawers that are actually airtight their contents are protected. Anything else in a relatively airtight container (even a plastic bag) will be protecte

If you mean the little bags for making tea, they probably have a tight enough weave, but they're bound to be way too small to be convenient. A good nut milk bag will allow you to pour a quart of milk into the bag to be strained at once. You massage the bag to get all the liquid to run out, leaving just the solid pulp. There are a bunch of good demonstration videos on youtube like this one: (In t

Fruit leather isn't hard to make raw. Just blend your fruit up, and lay out the mash on sheets in the dehydrator. The only really challenging thing is deciding what to spread the mash on. The ideal thing would be some kind of flexible teflex or silicone sheets with ridged edges to keep really liquidy mash from running off the sides while it's still damp. I don't have any with raised edges, so I h

That's surprising, Avocadess. Since that's the tube carrying clean water, I wonder what might have gotten in your tube that might mold. Does the tube stay full of water all the time, or only when water is running to the machine? If it stays full of damp air most of the time - instead of water - that might make the perfect environment for the development of tiny life. As I said, I don't have a

No, I don't. You can hook the EasyGreen up to plumbing, but out of the box you can just pour water into the reservoir manually. (Actually, I need to use a funnel to add water because the opening is quite narrow.) The reservoir holds about one gallon, which I need to replace every couple of days. The EasyGreen drain can also be hooked up to plumbing, or you can just run a drain tube into a bucket

bostonhill- I really like "The Raw Transformation" too. She's got a lot of recipes that require the appliances and a lot that don't. I feel like she's less inclined than a lot of raw cookbook authors to depend too heavily on the fatty ingredients. She does use them, but she won't suggest that you make a walnut patty serve it on a seed roll with a nut based sauce and a piece of lettuce (

I know a couple of the people on this forum use and love the FreshLife. I considered buying one myself for the same reason you are. I did the majority of my sprouting in SproutMaster trays. I also have an EasySprouter which I used frequently, but prefer the wide, flat SproutMasters. I spent a lot of time holding trays under the sink morning and night. When I had a several going I might spend ten

A number of the raw fooders on this forum do drink some alcohol. Whether you drink and what you drink and should depend primarily on what you want. If you are 40, 75 or 95% raw, but indulge with in vodka and orange juice that's fine as long as you decide that you are happy where you are. The age of 21 is a particularly difficult moment for anyone to swear off alcohol, and that isn't a step you ne

Anything that you make in a dehydrator probably will well be under an inch thick. You won't get "loaves" of bread made raw, and what you will get will be very different in texture and flavor from the cooked breads you're used to. Raw breads can be make of all kinds of different things. You can sprout wheat for two or three days, process the sprouted wheat into a mash and dry it in sh

Are you sure you have a good idea what you're craving? A raw soup can be made pretty warm without being cooked. If this doesn't really satisfy your craving then you might want to give it some more thought. Do you crave the floppy cooked texture of the vegetables? Is it an emotional desire to have soup when you're cold? Is it the spices/flavors that you miss? When I make raw soups I prefer v
