I haven't bought any of the pasteurized "raw". I don't really understand the new rules, but I'm pretty sure they don't have to pasteurize the almonds being imported from Europe. My co-op has recently restocked domestic unpasteurized almonds, and I think they are able to do it legally only because they have a local supplier. A lot of federal trade laws only become relevant when they cros

The important difference between juicing and blending is that when juicing the solid fibers are discarded. Greens can be handled either way, and both have advantages. I believe that nearly everyone juices grasses, as they have much tougher fiber than greens. Most fruits can be either juiced or blended, but bananas and avocados are blended. Because of their creamy texture I'd be surprised if they

I just got the 2007 issue of Living Nutrition yesterday. In the question & answer nutrition section someone did ask about keeping warm in the winter and Dr. David Klein responded: ================================================== "Increase your intake of the highest calorie fruits (e.g., bananas, persimmons, dried dates, raisins and figs) to provide the extra carbohydrate needed t

I would also suggest trying varieties of greens that are not as bitter on their own, and to keep the volume of greens moderate until you're sure you want more. The brown color you describe was probably the result of red raspberries + green leaves = brown smoothie. If you're not comfortable with the color, try using fruit that is not red - or else using "greens" which have red leaves.

I just ordered the Hurricane Stainless Steel Juicer ($105+S&H) yesterday. I ordered it to replace my first juicer, the HealthyJuicer Manual ($50). I didn't find the manual juicing to be any trouble, so I chose another manual one this time. The HealthyJuicer's mostly plastic construction was the problem for me. The auger (mostly plastic with a metal tip) developed small cracks around the seam

396. Artichoke
I haven't had artichoke in a long time and I've been craving them. I don't want to buy one and have it turn out to be not that edible raw. Does anyone eat artichoke raw? How does it taste? Is it difficult to separate the edible part? Thanks!

If you have dark brown buckwheat groats, then they probably still have the hulls on. These are great for sprouting, but the hulls are really tough and I don't know if you could soften them enough to eat without cooking. (I only tried it once, and didn't have success.) The pale colored raw buckwheat are the ones usually sold for eating. These have had the hulls removed, which makes them much ea

I've only grown sunflower sprouts a few times, and those times I've let them grow for a couple of weeks or so until the husks fell off by themselves. I've heard that pulling them off early with your fingers can damage the plants, but if you're harvesting them it probably doesn't matter. I usually use quicker growing sprout varieties that drop their hulls much sooner and have smaller softer hul

When I started eating raw foods I immediately found that I had next to no tolerance for alcohol. I got drunk quickly and felt lousy in the morning. I think it's because my food was digesting easier and faster so there was less bulk in my stomach to dilute it and slow it's absorption into my bloodstream. After a few months I found that my capacity for alcohol had become higher than it ever had

The way you phrased it, it sounded like you were telling people that your children were allergic to things that you prefer they don't eat, not things that are actually allergic to. I apologize if I jumped to that conclusion. I've known too many people who make false claims to allergies while trying to follow a diet, and I probably concluded too quickly this time.

I wish you'll be careful about claiming allergies that aren't real. There are a lot of people out there who still believe that people claiming to have allergies are exaggerating, whining, whatever. If you are merely trying to add weight to a food preference, no matter how well chosen your preference may be, the person who catches you at it may be less likely to believe it the next time they meet

I've never managed to enjoy raw potatoes. I've tried blending them. I tried slicing them thin and dehydrating into potato chips. Someone else might have liked them, but I thought they were vile and they went straight into the compost bin. I've been meaning to try making a raw eggplant baba ganouj, and I have hope it'll be yummy, but I don't know yet.

Starflower, I'm not going to try to add to all of the really great dietary advice already offered. You mentioned that you often feel better after eating badly. If you are eating foods which are difficult for you to digest then your system will divert energy from other systems to aid your digestion. If you are detoxifying this can be slowed, but so can nearly every other activity your body

I noticed that Lowri's brief raw diet was not only very gourmet, but the only fruit she mentions eating the entire week was avocado - which she clearly doesn't like much. I wonder if she just didn't find other fruit worth mentioning.

I enjoyed "Sunfood Diet" for a while, but had to stop reading it because I was bothered by David Wolfe's writing style. I found quite a few valuable tidbits in there, but he kept saying the most pompous and self-important things, as though his opinions were the only possible correct opinions. He also kept referring to himself as the world's most important authority on raw food. I found

With respect to green smoothies, I don't usually use any overtly fatty ingredients in mine. The fattiest ingredient I sometimes use is part of a lime (with the peel). I've heard of people using almond milk or coconut water as a base, and I may try one of these one day, but haven't really felt the need. As far as my diet overall, the fat balance is something I'm still struggling with, though you'l

I dehydrated some this summer. I don't know whether I did it the best way. I sliced them into fairly thin slices. I probably could have used thicker slices than I did, but the trick is to get them thin enough that they dehydrate fully before they start to really spoil. I don't know what the ideal thickness is, but it probably depends on the temperature and humidity of their dehydrating environmen

Would it be necessary to strain? Does the wheatgrass not blend as thoroughly as other greens in a high speed blender?

My inexpensive juicer has broken, and I'm not quite ready to drop the cash for a good quality one, especially given how much I've spent on holiday gifts. But... I've got a bunch of wheatgrass. Does anyone blend wheatgrass? How does that work? Is it recommended?

A lot of bitter leaves are milder when they are younger. When I pick dandelion leaves out of my yard I usually look for the smaller, younger ones. That said, I rarely pick enough to be more than a minor ingredient in a salad, or sometimes just a few leaves to nibble on, so I don't get the concentrated punch of bitterness that you would buying a large bunch of them.

Most people use "greens" to distinguish green leaves from other vegetables and roots. They are nutritionally very distinct and the term helps us to be clear.

Though milk can cause problems, there are any number of other things that might causing be your mother's trouble. If she's willing to consider that dairy might be the problem you could suggest to her that she give up the milk for a trial period of a few weeks. Three weeks isn't a big commitment, but if it makes her feel better she may be willing give it up long term.

I always discard soaking water. In fact, when doing a longer soak it can be beneficial to discard and replace the water during the process to keep the seeds or nuts clean. When I used to steam veggies frequently I used to save the steaming water to recover the "leaked goodness", and that's probably what you're thinking of.

I have made kimchi at home using a recipe I found in Wild Fermentation. That recipe doesn't call for any processed ingredients, including sugar. It calls for cabbage, other veggies of choice, salt water, garlic, ginger, hot pepper. I use an earthenware crock that I bought at my local hardware store, but I guess large canning jars work well too.

This is the Falafel with Mango Chutney from RAWvolution, and Waldorf salad from The Raw Transformation. The peppers in the chutney should have been red, but bell peppers in New York State are pretty much out of season so the best I could do was some green ones that were starting to "blush" red a little. The Waldorf Salad will be a staple for me as long as the local supply of apples hold

My preferred site for sprouting information is . They have a lot of sprouting information and suggestions. They say that soy is one of the harder seeds to sprout at home, so if you want to try them and you aren't an experienced sprouter you may want to buy some.

I recently got a power meter and used it to see how much energy my dehydrator was pulling. It started out pulling close to 900 watts, but after an initial warming period dropped to about 23 watts. I didn't watch it but I suspect it periodically went back up to 900 watts in order to reheat. After nine hours of operation I found that it had been pulling an average of 170 watts - that's 1 kwH every

To keep a liquid raw you don't want to raise the temperature much over 100°. To do that safely it's important to heat gently so isolated pockets of food aren't raised to much higher temperatures during the heating process. When using those heating trays with the candle underneath I'm not sure how hot the food directly over the candle gets, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were too hot. The g

We had an office Thanksgiving dish-to-pass on Friday, and I brought a few things to make sure I'd be able to participate fully in the feast and to share some good raw food with my co-workers. One of the things I brought was a large green salad, and a few homemade dressings to help sell the salad. It worked really well - a few of my coworkers had three servings of salad just so they could try all
