I might be taking a blender with me to another country that uses 220v power. I'm from the US (110v standard) so I understand I will need a step down transformer to reduce the voltage for my device. However, I'm concerned about frequency changes as well since there seems to be no way to change from 60 hz down to 50. Has anyone taken a blender overseas for a prolonged period of time? (3+ months)

Does frozen produce go bad faster than fresh if only refrigerated? I have a rather small freezer area and have been wondering if my frozen produce will fare much worse than the fresh if I refrigerate it.

I don't have the money for organic yet so I'm confined to regular grocery shopping. I've read that frozen produce actually retains more nutrients because they are quickly put into freezers, whereas fresh produce is only refrigereated (for a 1-2 week truck ride to the store) Does anyone know which is truly better?

Hi, Ever since I switched to a mainly produce/bean diet my stools have been fairly hard (no doubt due to the fiber) I'm having to deal with clogged toilets nearly daily Is there anything that can be eaten to naturally soften stools?

I personally intake about 1.5g a day of Omega 3s. If an acceptable ratio is 1:4 then that makes my Omega 6 allowance about 6g/day. This sounds like very little given the high fat content of nuts (I eat mixed nuts)

From what I've read, our ideal Omega 3:6 ratio is somewhere around 1:2 - 1:4. The average American diet consumes 1:20 however (Omega 6 imbalance) Are you guys concerned with this issue at all? I know my intake of Omega 6 is relatively high (I have a couple daily servings of nuts, which are high in O6)

The general sentiment in this thread is a bit unnerving. No more politics guys. I only want to do what's best for my body & I hope your goals are the same. RusticBohemian, The information about EPA and DHA originating from algae is interesting. You also quote a source that says humans have no problem converting ALA to DHA. Your source probably did find support for that, but my own

I've been reading about omega 3 EFAs recently and have found that plant sources are inferior to animal sources. The reason is because plants contain ALA, the parent molecule, whereas animals contain the broken down EPA and DHA that our body needs. ALA is only converted to the lower molecules at 5% for men, 12.5% for women. Some sources speculate that the recommendation of 1g EFAs is too low a

Do sugars in fruits essentially act the same as sugars in candy, soda, and other junk foods? I've always wondered this because I've always assumed that fruit = good, and I'm sure it is in many ways, but it still has large quantities of sugar (And I drink about 8-12 cups of green smoothies a day)

I don't think there is anything wrong with lean meats (fish and poultry) but alcohol is harder to defend. I don't drink wine, only hard liquor (rum, vodka, etc) Aren't the heart benefits from the grapes that wine is made from? Also, 3 or 4 shots taken together probably isn't the best pattern of consumption but I do it very rarely.

I rarely drink, but I will have about 3-4 shots every couple of months or so (About 24 servings a year). I'm sure abstaining is the best option but is there evidence to show that even light drinking has significant health risks?

Not sure if I can agree with the logic behind that (assuming the peels are supposed to protect the plant). Those pesticides get into the soil too, which means they'll be taken in through the roots. I'd imagine its hard to escape the drawbacks of pesticides

Due to fridge constraints my stock of greens is always limited. One day I'll have a nice, full sized fridge but for now I must rotate more than I'd like. Because of this, it's more important for me to eat the top-shelf stuff regularly. I currently eat a lot of spinach, kale, and romaine lettuce. I believe the spinach and kale are both near the top for nutrient density; not sure about the lettu

I don't add extra salt; I don't even have extra salt (packets or container) in the house. A can of black beans + tomato sauce each day is the big culprit. But I wasn't really asking about how to reduce sodium, just wondering if people could help me understand how valid the RDA is especially with high potassium intake

Hi, If you are moving from a very low quality diet (junk food as staples) then you'll probably experience some immediate positive effects like weight loss, increased energy, focus, etc. But otherwise do not expect radical changes. Nutritional food can be thought of like a weak but natural, long term medicine. The shorter the time-frame, the more subtle the effects. As a population, heal

I calculated that my sodium intake is over the recommended daily amount of 2.4g. Mine is around 3-3.5g per day. I know why low sodium intake is important (prevents high blood pressure) but I'm not sure about how valid or important the RDA is, and also if high potassium is enough to offset some extra sodium. Anyone know?

Ever since I've learned about the danger of non-organic food I've been feeling a bit down about my food, even though my diet is technically healthier than before. I don't want to be eating pesticides every day but money is tight and I just can't afford to pay those prices of organically grown produce (don't have a way to grow my own either). Is there anything that can be done to reduce the pes

Hi all, I'm going to a farmer's market for the first time tomorrow. To be honest I'm a little nervous. I normally stick to the big stores for their reputation. Now I'll be dealing with a bunch of guys from who-knows-where with food that probably hasn't been inspected by anyone. How do you guys shop these markets safely? Is there a good resource for examining food before buying?

It's hard to sy which oil is best. Canola and Olive are at the top depending on who you listen to. Be careful with coconut oil. Some are saying the saturated fat content doesn't affect the lifespan of the natives who survived off it, but we're not yet sure if that applies to westerners

Hi all, Unfortunately I am limited to a 1.7 cubic foot mini-fridge for a while (with an extremely small freezer box) Therefore I need to be careful which foods I have in the freezer. My understanding is most fruits and vegetables do not need refrigeration but it does help extend their freshness. So which ones do require refrigeration?
