hmm, maybe I should have added a smiley face. I don't have enough experience to debate this subject, so I'll just say that although I can appreciate the simplicity of natural hygiene as a healing/cleansing method, nothing but the purest of foods to cleanse the body and overcome an illness, I can't imagine that I'd ever get to the point, no matter how well I felt, that I'd find fault with pepper

Well, this is why I'm giving natural hygience a try. I love fruit, I'm single, and I'm lousy in the kitchen (not the bed). I figure I can just gorge on fruit until some lass who loves to prepare a variety of raw foods comes along to take pity on me and saves me from my fate...

wow, we're practically neighbors. I've heard a little of what's happening in Detroit, but am still settling back into Ann Arbor after a long hiatus in Chicago. I was anti-green as a child, nothing but meat, potatoes, and dessert (preferrably a lot of the latter). I never ate a salad until I was 20 years old, and only when drenched in dressings. The only thing I wonder about 100% raw, is if

Well, I've been boycotting McDonald's and other fast food joints since the 1980s; my weakness has been towards lattes and scones at coffee shops, a deadly combination. I've been off coffee for years, but only about about a month since my last scone. Only one week back on mostly raw, and 100% today. Not really sure what my goal is, but I guess I'm trying out 80-10-10 as a cleanse and then who

If you're driving through Ann Arbor, MI, pick me up... I also believe co-living is probably the way to go. So if you place lettuce and bananas and avocoados out on the floor and let 3 years old have at it, would there choices speak to the 80-10-10 approach, mostly sugar? If you added a bowl of chocolates, older kids steeped in the SAD approach would no doubt go for those, but what would

Hi Corathegreen, I've been thinking about that synchronicity, too. The last time I was into raw, I don't remember hearing anything about 80-10-10. Maybe it just wasn't popular within my raw community at the time. Now it's all I hear about, then I decide to check out my local raw foods meetup, and the founder is 80-10-10, and I read her book and the similarities are amazing between some of h

Hi Paul, I'm new, just getting back into raw. I had gotten into it in the past but had jumped straight into a detox class, but I don't think I was mentally prepared for it. I think, down deep, I still wanted my old lifestyle back and was hoping the detox classes would fix some issue and let me return to my old ways. Back then, I had no plan at all; I kept trying to be a raw foodist but even

Went to a vegetarian fest yesterday and listened to a talk from someone (Ellen Livingston) in my area who studied with Doug Graham and is into the 80-10-10 approach. Bought and read her book last night. She offers coaching and I'm thinking of trying it. On one level, it makes total sense to me, but I wonder if I could stick with it over the long haul. Anyway, I'm thinking of jumping into it a

I'm amazed you can eat dates like that. That many would do me in. A few causes me to have fatigue, but I've got a long ways to go with cleansing.

Wow Coco, great suggestion. My body does seem to already be detoxing - I'll spare you the lovely details. It's amazing how life can turn on a dime - or a banana...

First of all, thanks to all who responded to my last thread. I think the overall message to relax and go slowly was exactly what I needed to hear. Funny, just a few days have passed and I've gone from those negative doubts about not being sure I could do this to having to hold myself back because I'm loving raw foods. It may sound like a crazy thing to do, given the focus of this site, but I'v

Sometimes I just need to listen to my own advice. Believe it or not, I wrote this excerpt about 2 years ago (it's an imaginary conversation): “I ate something I shouldn’t have,” I’d admit. “I’m afraid I’m still working towards that goal of becoming perfectly healthy.” She’d smile and gently shake her head. “Well my young handsome man. Being healthy is not a goal to

When I got into the raw foods diet in the past (around 2003/2004), I did so in Chicago at Karyn Calabrese's restaurant/wellness center. She was big on detox, holding a detox class every other month. I took her class 4 times in one year and she cheered me on. Obvously that was way too much for me and eventually I burned out. But she preached that detox should be done several times a year, that

I understand. I'm a writer and tend to let loose without holding back - I believe in complete honesty, as I can only learn that way. If I'm not fully truthful or hold something back, then what have I accomplised? For instance, if I discovered that the unmentionable broth was a great help in weaning me from the past to a better future, I'd want to report so, and would have no problem at all if

Ok, thanks. I'll check out the book. I'll certainly abide by the forum policy, but I think it's a shame if one can't even mention such things as part of the transition process, something I would imagine the vast majority of vegans have experienced, especially if it turns out for me to be immensely helpful. Having said that, I realize that opening that door could lead to unwanted debates, etc.

Nice words of wisdom all. Thanks. I was mostly venting, putting my thoughts and anxieties out into the universe (hoping they would float away from me forever) and the sentiments I've received from you all are more helpful than I would have expected... Thus I am feeling a bit more hopeful this morning and wonder if I might actually be in a better mental place than I was in the past, when I wa

I do plan to make the transition slowly, and have no plan to be 100 percent forever unless it somehow miraculously feels right to do so, but I am feeling a need to clean myself out with a detox. My current doctor wants me to have a stress test done, concerned that I've developed heart disease, so this is a serious, urgent matter. I'd rather do a detox than a stress test. Such words are highly

Hello all, Several years ago I tried to be a raw foodist and failed miserably. I even posted a handful of times here. A few raw food detoxes helped me to get over some health issues, but for about 3 years I couldn't keep the diet going. I'd last a few weeks or a month and then binge for a few days on cooked foods, which often led to baked goods (my worst enemy). Then I'd feel the need for

I do include hemp seeds in most of my smoothies. I'm consuming so many of them right now that I'm beginning to wonder if one can live on them alone, and if trying to do so, at least long enough to get over some health issues (digestive stuff), are there certain ingredients I should be adding to ensure I'm getting the proper nutrition. Thanks for the help.

Hello all, I've been away from the raw diet for a long time but lately coming back to it. I was suprised to find my username was still valid here after being absent for a few years. Anyway, I'm mostly just making a lot of green smoothies right now. My usual smoothie is made with bananas, berries, an apple, kale, flax seeds, and hemp protein powder (from Nutiva). The more I make, the more I
