I don't know about arsenic removal with Matrikx's filters. Try checking their specs on their website or see if there is a tech support contact to ask. No, the standard 10 inch Matrikx filter cartridges will not fit the multipure housings.

VeganLife, I've only used the under-counter systems for the KX Matrikx filters. The cartridges are the industry standard 10" configuration and will fit any housing made for 10" cartridges. The housings I'm using are the dual side-by-side cartridge housings that I bought from a retailer in Arcata, CA. Here's what one brand looks like: Dual Filter Housing These are the easiest to inst

A whole bunch of my friends used Multipure filters for years, but we were finally told that they are mainly for removing chemicals from municipal water supplies. If you read the Multipure literature that comes with the filters, they don't mention biological contaminates. My friends mostly live on country water systems from wells, creeks or springs where biological contamination is the main concer

Seren, Remember that most mainstream allopathic doctors receive a miniscule amount of nutritional training. I would walk out on yours if she said that to me. What do they really know? Not much about real health, IMO. They base their knowledge mostly on studies of average people in our society IMO, not healthy vegans or raw vegans. Arugula, are my statements accurate?...I value your knowledge

A slight correction to the story of my yogi friend. He was from Philadelphia, not Pittsburgh. That would probably be offensive to someone from Philly Coco, I don't know if this is a true story or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were. Krishna Das, Ram Das, Bagavan Das or one of the other Americans who were disciples of Neem Karoli Baba in the late 1960's told the story of their guru as

Coco, What a great story! You have me grinning ear to ear. Love From Uti Shaine, One way to look at the situation is to see the vegan food your mom prepares as sacred, a gift prepared in love and consumed with gratefulness. When I go back to Tennessee to visit my mom and sister I am confronted with a barrage of non-vegan, much less raw, food events. Food is such a central part of their

What's a bigger picture here? I did a period of radical anti-corporate activism in my past and I agree that the bottom line is shareholder profit, but the reality of that is they do know something about efficiency in running their businesses. Sometimes that means making decisions that have a negative impact, but not always. In this case the corporate organic producers/ distributors have the in

Jordan, IMO, It's one thing to be raw and switch back to clean vegan (by which I mean no oils, processed foods or heavy condiments), but to go from raw to SAD will likely be very stressful, both physically and mentally. In this case SAD means Standard Army Diet. Your desire to move towards a higher level of health with raw foods is admirable, but the reality is that for the period of time you

Given that the skin is the largest elimination "organ" of the body I would look for other causes, rather than the amount of fruit sugar you're consuming, for skin problems. The simple sugars in fruit like glucose are the most easily digestible and readily used fuel for the body's cells. Everything else takes more digestive energy and produces more waste. I have been having some

Bryan's absolutely right about the real costs of certain foods which are heavily subsidized by taxpayers. Water is the biggest commodity that is sold to agricultural producers at below cost by the government. So that means that most of what is grown using irrigation in the Central, Sacramento and Imperial valleys of California is tax subsidized, including organic fruits and veggies grown there. H

You'd have to eat an awful lot of celery to reach 100% RDA of sodium. My online reference says 2 medium stalks weighing 110 grams have 125mg of sodium which is about 8% of the government RDA (1,500g) for most adult age groups. That means you would have to eat 1,320 grams of celery or approximately 24 medium stalks or 2 medium bunches to meet the RDA for sodium, assuming you weren't getting any

ALIVEis another fancy gourmet raw restaurant in San Francisco. Haven't been there yet, but my raw friends love it when they go down to the City and it will be number one on my list when I go down next trip. I've been to Gratitude in the Mission several times and have enjoyed the experience. I couldn't eat that way every day, but it sure is entertaining.

A good safety rule for sharp edge tools is never put anything that bleeds in the path of a blade. Unless you're a butcher, which thankfully we aren't since we're vegans. I know the technique you speak of in removing the pit by holding the avo half in the palm and burying the edge of the knife in the pit and pulling it out with a rotating movement. I've watched chef's do it countless times and

Inner Beauty, Most raisins are raw since the easiest way to produce them is to let the grapes dry on the vine. Some, the golden ones in particular, are dehydrated with heat. They're not an unhealthy food IMO. The sugars in them are monosaccharides and are absorbed quickly into the bloodstream and are easy on the digestion. Like all dehydrated raw foods they will absorb moisture in the gut, so

Lemoned, I really like Bryan's suggestions. From a lesson that I am currently working on: I would take a look at what you're putting into your body and when, instead of looking for something that is missing. Heavier, denser, or high fat foods eaten with spices and condiments are often called "grounding". IMO that's because the body is using up a lot more energy to process them ove

As I see it, the purpose of a fast is to give the body a rest, especially the digestive system. This allows the body to focus more energy on cleansing and healing. During an extended water fast the digestive system is fully unemployed, so it gets maximum benefit from the fast. For me this happens around day 3 to 4 and after that there's less discomfort. Some people feel very energized during

Cold Pasteurization is the new nice sounding buzzword for irradiation to make it more acceptable by the uninformed public. They keep trying to push this technology down our throats instead of keeping the food growing/processing/handling stream clean. This paper quoted above by Dr. Sik-Lam Wong is from the company that makes the irradiation equipment in San Leandro, CA and who were pioneers i

Pineapple Girl, Thanks for making me Well I don't miss that popcorn or those Bearitos organic taco chips too much. I'm sure I ingested more than my share! Hi Bracken, There's not a good reason to eat processed oils, IMO. They are highly concentrated sources of fat. You can easily get all the daily fat calories necessary from whole food sources. In fact, too easily. I've been told by long term raw foodists that over-eating fat is a common reason why newcomers fail with raw. Doug Graham has a long list of health problems in his 80/10/10 book th

My staple green has been romaine lettuce heads or bags of hearts since becoming raw. I just recently had a strong attraction to some beautiful dark greens that I hadn't had since I stopped eating eating them regularly cooked. At that time I was experiencing some skin problems and someone suggested more dark leafy greens, so I added kale and seaweeds back into my diet. I've been loving them and m

Rawnaturel, Here's a little bit of the math as it relates to the 80/10/10 diet from Appendix D on page 338 of Dr. Doug Graham's book. For a person eating 2,000 calories a day the 80/10/10/breakdown is this: carbs 1,600 cals protein 200 cals fat 200 cals California Hass avocados have about 167 calories per 100 grams. 2 fruits, medium size, have about 300 grams of edible fruit which equ

Lemoned, David's suggestions are wonderful. I'd like to elaborate a bit on a couple of things. Losing weight is a fine goal to start out with, as we are taught that by our society that equates looking good and "normal" weight with good health. From my own experience and others I know who have started from the weight loss goal, the picture of what good health is expands over time,

I lived in Tennessee and the South for the first 32 years and have lived in Northern California since 1983. I don't buy the natural disaster fears about CA, FL and HI. I seem to remember that a lot more people die annually from lightning strikes and tornadoes than earthquakes and volcanoes. Also the 3 states your family ruled out grow most of our fruits and veggies. California is a big diver

Daisyduke, There's so much more to healthful living than just the food. Plenty of sleep, fresh clean air, sunshine, avoiding stress, meaningful work, fulfilling relationships, physical exercise and recreational activities to name a few things that are necessary to bring one into a high state of health. Michelle, You don't need to spend big bucks for a fancy juicer to do citrus. My roommate and I have been using a cheap Black and Decker Citrus Mate juicer steadily for over 2 years and it is holding up so far to the heavy use. It's the best buy for the money and performance I've experienced from my years of fancy gourmet cooking to the present. At one time I had a $200 juicer with the citrus a
