The combo of acid/citrus and fat/ seed or nut butter seems to work for me. What I would be most concerned about is getting fresh raw commercially prepared products and then making sure that they don't go rancid before they are used. I'm still experimenting with making my dressings with fresh whole seeds and nuts. So far I've done okay with grinding almonds and am debating on whether to buy ano

Bryan, I'm really grateful for all the work you do to keep this forum healthy and functioning. Thank you for devoting your computer knowledge and skills to this situation. I don't know anyone else here who could have figured out what was going on and exposed it. I appreciate your attempts to handle this privately and I support your decision to respond after being publicly attacked for doi

I have a whole new relationship with the sun since going fully raw. I used to go to the dermatologist yearly for a check up and liquid nitrogen treatments for what the doc called "pre-cancerous" skin cell growth. I haven't been back in several years and those itchy spots on my face disappeared last summer. I had a mole on my chest that the doc always did a long questioning "

Lisa, Congratulations on your successessful start! I don't want to burst your bubble, but I would like to stress the word START. There's more to go. Think of your health problems as an onion......you've just peeled the first layer off. Or.... I'm thinking of the quote, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" Remember your health deteriorated over a period of yea

Taylor, Oregon is such a huge state. Wouldn't it take a lot of rocket fuel to contaminate it everywhere?

California sure has an abundance of opportunities for the raw lifestyle. It's much easier to connect with others in the San Francisco Bay area and the Los Angeles area with all of it's raw restaurants. Cafe Gratitude in S.F. is my current favorite restaurant and I seem to do pretty well with their gourmet raw food occasionally, even though Natural Hygiene raw is where I'm playing in my regular d

Elizabeth, My experience with cravings is that there are 2 types. One craving is when the body is asking for something it truly needs that is in short supply; this is actually true hunger. The other comes from an emotional/psycological place. Heavy, hard to digest foods are craved when the emotional pain level gets intense because they numb me out. For years I referred to these as "comfo

I just read Doug Graham's chapter (6) on protein and the misconceptions about it in his new book. It's one of the most concise and sensible explanations I've read. His information is footnoted or source quoted. I especially liked his section on Athletes and Bodybuilders where he states that the only thing that really works to build muscle mass is weight bearing exercise and that 10% of daily

I would define fruit as the package created by a plant, containing it's seed, that is made to be consumed by an animal in order for the next generation of the plant to be spread. In fact, some plants' seeds only germinate successfully when they are scarified by an animal's stomach acids on their journey through the digestive tract to be deposited on the ground in a pile of $#%! errr, fertilze

I'm a long time gardener so I thought I'd share a few more tips. I grew up in a gardening family with the benefit of learning a lot early on. My mom grew up in the depression in a large family where they had to grow food to meet their needs and she kept a large vegetable garden in our suburban backyard until she went to work full time and had to downscale her garden. She told me I was helping he

Sorry, I don't have a link to the Barbarian Head Brand Mango peeler. It's about 8 inches long, made of stainless steel and has an orange plastic handle. Bryan got ours in a San Francisco Chinatown store. You'll have to do some searching to see if anyone carrying Asian culinary specialities sells them online. Uti

Anybody out there have experience with what kind of fruits are available in Costa Rica during the month of February? I'm heading down there with a group of 6 friends in the middle of the month. 3 of us are raw frugitarian, the rest, vegan leaning towards raw. We know it's going to be mango season and are looking forward to that. I'd love to hear about anyone's experiences or recommendations o

My experience is that the further along the raw path I go, the more sensitive I get to poisons like caffeine and chocolate. I was a long time green tea drinker after I left coffee behind. I allowed green tea to gradually leave my diet when it no longer served me, rather than pushing it away in denial and guilt (self-judgement). I put it down and picked it back up several times, never knowing whic

We tried the Vitamix 2 hp household model, but it wouldn't blend flax seed batters very well, so I sent it back and got the 3 hp Vita Prep commercial model. I'm very happy with that, even though it was a lot more $$$. It's a workhorse of a machine. I found it at the best price through an eBay store. The best price I found for the regular Vitamix was through the manufacturer's factory reconditione

Are you suggesting that, based on studies of 2 relativly small groups of indigenous tropical island cultures with a radically different lifestye, modern westerners will experience the same level of health eating 60% saturated fat? Sounds like someone has some coconut oil to sell to me. Ever seen any documentation of what happened to pacific isanders when we started shipping them frozen turk

I was a heavy fat, starch and processed sugar eater before transitioning to raw even though I was vegan. My consumption of sweet fruit was very low; maybe 2 to 3 pieces of apples, a bananna, some grapes or a glass of OJ at a breakfast when eating out per week. When I ate a banana it was solid yellow with a hint of green at the stem and starchy (unripe). I had an adversion to them when they got s

Brewer's yeast is designed to speed up the process of fermentation to make alcohol, Putting that in your gut is explosive and the alcohol and gas created are toxic for you. Nutritional yeast is for human consumption and has a cheesy flavor and makes a great cooked vegan cheese sauce. Neither are Raw. Indulge with awareness, use sparingly, and wean your self off of N yeast if your goal is a 100% R

Kim, Most commercial raw treats have lots of processed sweetners in them and fat, these two do not combine well for good digestion. That said, indulge sparingly in these things so they are not part of daily nutrition. If you eat a lot of dehydrated crackers or other foods be sure to eat slowly and chew well and drink some extra water after consuming or rehydrate the food before eating, otherw

Crunch, You just took the first step towards breaking your addiction. And yes, it is an addiction and it's more powerful than narcotics. If you truly want to make a positive change in your eating you're going to have to accept that it will get worse before it gets better. The issue is in the tissue. All the toxic food substances, negative emotional events, and physical abuses of life get st

You don't have to rush out and buy a powerful/ expensive blender to remedy your problem. I wouldn't discard the center rib, but I would remove it and then cross cut it into many small 1/4 inch pieces then back into the blender with the soft green leaf Same thing with tough stringy celery in any blended recipe. The one I haven't solved yet is certain Yellow Mangos like one Haitian variety I

Rob, The presence of fruit flies (if that's what they are) are not a certain indicator of the Raw nature of your fruit, in this case dates. They are an indicator that the fruit they are inhabiting has passed its peak of ripeness and the skin has loosened around the stem or the skin is bruised or cut, which allows them access to their food and supports their breeding cycle and their annoying abi

To answer Amanda's question directly. Dates can beither Raw, meaning never heated over 118 deg F, Sundried at low temps or Dried in high temp dehydrators, If you buy fresh raw organic dates from the advertizers in Raw magazines or websites you get the opportunity to do business direct from grower to consumer. If you aren't sure their dates are truly raw ask them questions. Raw Date season in C

Thanks for your info Rawmark and others. In my own raw food diet I am down to two primary sources of prepared sweetner - agave nectar and blended soft fresh dates. I prefer fresh organic dates when the flavor of date isn't an issue or is desirable. Bryan and I were both in the dessert preparation demo at the Vibrant Living Expo mentioned above when the person asked about dates being bad
