There is an inexpensive glove made of kevlar that will protect you from most cuts for about 10 bucks. for one source. Wood carvers use them a lot and their tools have to be surgically sharp. There is a lightweight glove that has stainless steel fibers but they cost considerably more. I agree with what other have said about sharp knives: a properly sharpened knife will cut without excessive f

If I have a high fat meal close to sleep time I don't usually feel like eating the next morning, especially if it was a complex meal or had a lot of nuts. From what I've read a meal like that is still digesting and the fat is still in the blood stream. If I do have a big smoothie with lots of bananas I get whacked out. Another thing I've noticed is if I down my usual 32 ounce smoothie too fas

What helped me was to begin a process of looking where the cravings were coming from. What I've learned so far is that most of my cravings come from my mind; rarely from my body in need of some nutritional item. I know I'm not alone in this; much has been written in this forum, books and other websites about the subject. The bottom line for me is recognizing that in my past food has been use

I've been self employed since 1983 doing all sorts of work. I had a crafts business with my ex wife which did well materially for 10 years, but was very taxing on health and relationship. Where I live it's useful to have a variety of skills so I started make my living doing all sorts of building trades, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, alternative energy, and woodworking. I work 3 to 4 days a

I don't drink water daily on my raw diet and still have to empty my bladder 5 or more times a day. The exceptions to this are when I've been very active and sweating on hot days or have eaten foods that are on the dehydrated side or during a water fast. My diet is high in fruit and watermelon is my favorite summer food which I eat almost every day in high season. Right now the early fall melon

fuzzysox, I didn't do a lot of reading before I began exploring fasting, but I did read one small book by Dr. Herbert Shelton, Fasting Can Save Your Life, which helped me a lot, taking into consideration the time in which Shelton wrote and his beliefs that fasts should be professionally supervised. Still, I recommend this quick read. It is generally not recommended for beginning fasters tha

Some of my favorite raw salad dressings are also my source of fat, but I have also been exploring some fat free recipes. I like working intuitively in the kitchen, so I don't always measure things and go by how something tastes and feels. This one has several variations and can be used as a thick sauce for raw squash or cucumber noodle dishes. Tonight I made it spicy with a touch of ground

I didn't come in from work today until dark and was feeling tired and hungry from my day. I didn't want to spend much time preparing food, so I decided on bananna ice cream so I could relax, eat and check out the forum. But I wanted something else to go with it even though the fridge is a bit empty right now waiting on our produce delivery later in the week. I found some shredded coconut in the

djatchi, Beautifully written post, I enjoyed it immensely. Sharing a meal with loved ones is sacred to me. The "form" of my diet is secondary to sharing the love. When I traveled back east to Tennessee and Georgia to visit my family last year I indulged in some small amounts of the good ole Southern style cooking from my past. One of the dishes wasn't even vegan (cornbread made

Sarah, Freezing banannas depends on your unit and how cold it is. We buy our banannas by the case, so sometimes they may ripen faster than we can eat them. No problem, because we peel and freeze them. If we lose a few we shed no tears because we use the peels and over ripened or freezer damaged fruits to make a special compost that our roses love. We turn banannas into beautiful roses.

Tabitha, For me proper food combining is absolutely necessary on a raw diet. If I push the limits I can expect the discomforts of bloating, gas, irregular bowel activity or low energy. For more info click on the blue text to read an archived post from Bryan on food combining that is dated 5/31/06 2:46pm. This website has some quick and easy basic reading on raw foodism or check out Dr. Do

meinleben, For me there are no "rules" regarding 80/10/10. A person previously posting to this thread seems to have a personal axe to grind with Doug Graham. If you get up in your head with rules you are ignoring the rest of your body and not learning what works for you. My suggestion is to keep seaweeds in your raw diet and pay attention to how you feel after eating them. I f

Loretta, After I had been 100% raw for a period of time I did a 21 day water fast. After the fast I went through a period of high energy and was only sleeping an average of 3 hours straight a night. The biggest problem I had was my belief system that I needed a certain number of hours of deep sleep to function properly. In the end the stress of my judgements was outweighed my experience, whic

I have a similar situation. I spend a lot of days away from the house from early in the morning until near dark. Sometimes I'm driving in the truck commuting between classes or jobs for a couple of hours and want to eat while I'm driving or pulled over, so I look for ways to eat that require very little preparation and have very little mess and utensils to deal with. I have a small cooler bag th

I'll have to add my 2 cents and say that 8-/10/10 is the only raw food or diet and health improvment book that I have wanted to read cover to cover, did so and enjoyed the read as well as learned more than all my previous readings. What I mean by that is that this book tied a lot of loose ends together for me from things I had read over the years. All the other raw diet books I have recently re

Kerensa: I haven't mono eaten grapefruit either, but I hope you'll try it and share your experience with us. I have had periods where I eat several a day when they are really sweet and not too acidic. Mono eating can be for just a meal or for longer periods of time. Not combining a variety of foods at one meal can be very gentle on the digestion. Some people mono eat one thing as a fast. Othe

I'm a bit confused by all this Almond Board hoopla. According to my past experience with them (they were a client of my photography studio partner), the California Almond Advisory Board is a member supported marketing organization. They are not a government regulatory or lawmaking body, though they have a quasi-governmental look and function. They are supported by a portion of the money receive

oregonisaac, Your photo here is much better than the one on the vote web page. Re: Durians. I didn't bookmark the site but I recently ran across a tropical fruit website that had tropical fruit nursery resources listed. Try a search on those. The issue of transporting live seeds across borders, state or international, is a touchy issue, so short of smuggling a few seeds, experienced nurseries

Thanks macfly! Sharing expereince, wisdom, and learning is what's it's about. So glad to hear you have incorporated things you are learning into your own exploration. BTW, I expect to be at Gratitude in the Mission this month either before flying to Costa Rica or after returning.....God! Maybe even both! There are some new things on the winter menu that I'd like to sample. I'm an energy

Macfly, I have to admit I've pretty much been a hedonist when I've been to Gratitude. I downloaded their menu before I went there the first time and had my hit list of possibilites. I didn't take any greens with me, but I've had 2 salads in the course of my meals. I don't do heavy garlic, cacao, smoothies or grains. The food is spicy and salted which are items I don't eat daily. It's heavy o

Taylor, Please be careful! Growing your own food is highly addictive and empowering and will cause your thumb to turn green and arouse tomato envy in your neighbors. But if you are going to throw caution to the wind anyway, Seedsavers is a great company and used to be a customer of mine . They have great heirloom varieties which usually means more flavor, as a lot of varieties now days ar

Ayurveda is a 3,000 year old traditional Hindu system of medicine which is designed to bring the body back into balance. There are universities and hospitals in India devoted to Ayurvedic medicine. The name itself translates from sanskrit as "long-life science". I'm sure the Ayurvedic doctors would find our conversation amusing in light of their success with urine therapies for years l

SSSAD. Southern Style. My grandparents grew up on farms in the South at a time when everything was made from scratch and food was preserved by canning, drying or smoking. My mom grew up in town as the youngest child in a large family and was my grandmother's kitchen helper. She could make a pan of biscuits in her sleep, all by feel, no measuring. So when I grew up in the 1950's we did not eat

There are a number of things from Yoga that address better elimination. Squatting has already been mentioned which helps counteract the effect of our fear-based, tidy-hidey society to "pucker up" and hold our bowels in. We have been taught for the sake of modern so called "efficient" schedules to regulate our bowels and supress the urge to eliminate, rather than eliminate t

However, the words unrelated to personal experence are simply mental masturbation. The person most likely to be impressed by them is the writer. They bear no fruit. OOOPS!! I MADE A FACEPLANT! I misquoted the passage from the Hsin Hsin Ming with a very key word which drasticly changes the meaning "and heaven and hell are set infinitely apart" It should read "heaven and earth are..."
