Just go by taste, you'll soon find that what most consider "ripe" is still sour and underdeveloped, and that when you allow further ripening the fruit becomes more sweet, luscious, and appealing.

No problems here, thicker hair than ever. I must say that I have met scores of people following an 80/10/10 type of diet and almost invariably they exhibited excellent health with NO signs of hair loss or malnutrition. I have met more people following other types of raw diets who seemed to display sickly health. That being said, many of them told me that they did experience some hair loss in

It depends. Sometimes it's purely mechanical in that a machine strips the hulls off, othertimes chemicals are used like caustic soda. Either way the seeds must then be dried out, and this is done normally with a drying machine or if you're lucky in the sun (but that's if you're lucky.) By this time the seeds are basically devitalized and I wouldn't consider them "raw" anymore even befor

No, they haven't been soaked and unfortunately, Maranatha "raw" almond butter isn't raw. The nuts and the almond butter have been heated to a high degree in the process of drying and jarring. There are several varieties of truly raw nut butters that you can find in certain stores and also order online. Rejuvenative foods is one company manufacturing a variety of these, and there are oth

You should come to Santa Barbara during persimmon season, Bryan. I don't know what it is about this place, but people have no value for their persimmons. All over town, you come across homes with big bags or wheelbarrows out front with signs saying "free persimmons" or asking for some paltry sum. Mostly Hachiya. Just yesterday I got 102 large hachiya persimmons for $20.50 (someone had t

I agree, eating oranges while they are in season shouldn't cause any problems as long as they're ripe and sweet. Eating them year round, sure, that could cause some problems but it doesn't sound like that's what you're doing. I've been eating lots of oranges and tangerines for 3-4 months out of the year for the past 4 years and haven't had any teeth issues.

I have the book. Just because apples aren't in the meal plans doesn't mean that they aren't part of the diet. The meal plans are just an example for people to get an idea of what the plan might look like on a daily basis. Cempedak and Jackfruit aren't in the meal plan either and they are also part of the diet. Hundreds of tropical fruits aren't in the meal plan. He couldn't have designed the samp

Apples and oranges are a perfectly valid part of the 80/10/10 diet. The diet in no way excludes these two fruits. It's simply a matter of choice. For a lot of people (myself included) apples don't work. If they work for you, great.

Kalin, we can't ignore the fact that people in parts of the world where large quantities of coconut are consumed are also living an entirely different lifestyle than the typical American. Often, we humans fall prey to the fallacy of equating correlation with causation. In this instance, the coconuts may have little or nothing to do with their good health, and their fitness level and outdoor lifes

Actually a huge portion of the earth is tropical...about a 2-3 thousand mile band on either side of the equator, stretching all the way around the earth. That's rather a large area for a species. It may or may not be preposterous to suggest that a species has a particular environment in which they can most naturally thrive. That depends on how reasonable the assertion. But surely you won't di

What Whole Foods means when they label a nut "raw" is that it hasn't been "roasted" in oil. It doesn't mean that it's fresh or unheated.

I just bought 4 giant ones since I saw them in the market after reading your post, Bryan. Have you found John's advice to be fairly accurate regarding appropriate ripeness being indicated by similar "give" to a ripe avocado? I don't want to eat them too early but I don't want to wait too long either...

Better to go outside and get some fresh air anyways instead of sitting inside all day even on your break. Dealing with these types of comments is just a waste of time. In a few years you'll find that you aren't even phased by such things and if you spend as much time as possible outdoors instead of in offices and lunchrooms, and continue with your diet, people will be so fascinated by your obviou

I had concerns originally about stubbing my toes too. Much to my surprise, I haven't stubbed my toes a single time since ridding myself of the shoes. What I learned from this is that the reason we stub our toes is because we're completely unused to having them stick out, as normally they're encased in a firm protective layer of shoe. So we have no need for our brain to develop a mental image of w

Richard, have you experimented with foregoing shoes altogether for your activities? I'm at the point now where I'm able to do all of my running, hiking, weight training, climbing, etc without footwear of any kind, and it's been a tremendously liberating experience. It took time, but gradually my feet and soles became strong enough to handle just about anything. In fact I haven't really found anyt

Also: Cultivate habits that make you feel great. When you genuinely feel great, you'll have no desire to smoke. When you smoke, you're looking for something and taking the easy way out. Take the more challenging but genuine path instead. Once you've developed yourself into a person in peak physical, emotional, and mental condition, you'll laugh at the idea of a cigarette being able to prov

I didn't find personally that any particular foods were helpful with reducing cravings. After the first week or so, any cravings are very likely to be primarily or at least largely pyschological in nature. It helped me to let go of the idea of consuming anything to obtain relief from my cravings for tobacco. That's how we got into the mess in the first place. It also helped to cultivate the u

Personally, the program that Dr Graham recommends in his 80/10/10 book is very close to the raw diet that I've been most successful with. Regardless of whether or not you choose to also explore other choices, I believe you'll find the book will offer you some keen insights you won't find elsewhere, especially if you are, in actuality, seeking the "best possible health" that you're capab

Rambutans are similar to lychees in taste....in appearance, they resemble something you might expect to find on mars. Strange hairlike threads growing out of a reddish shell. You can grow lychees in Florida. Also in certain parts of California....I recently had some locally grown ones here on the south coast.
