Bryan, The holistic doctor called me back and she said that she's sending another script for me to get further thyroid testing done. She's been wanting me to go on thyroid meds for low thyroid, but I think the raw food will eventually correct everything and I have refused. It turns out that low thyroid can cause the retention, as well as countless other things. I'm still sticking with the s

Wow, Bryan. Maybe it *is* the herbs, then! Before I had the major problem the day before yesterday, I had eaten a cauliflower salad with over a cup of spearmint, a bunch of loveage, some cilantro, and something else that I'm not remembering. It tasted divine, but I forgot about eating all those herbs until you just mentioned about not tolerating herbs. Yesterday, when there was no swelling, I

I wish I would have check here, before I called the holistic doctor and left a message for her. I had no idea it could take a few weeks to flush out the salt. Bryan, yesterday I ate very simply and consumed no salt or fat (which also meant no garlic or onions, since I like them with salt and fat). I did great and had no swelling. Today I've eaten relatively simple, but with my salad I chopped

LOL la_veronique you crack me up! fruitgirl, thanks! I have no idea if it would work, or not. If you try it and have success, be sure to let me know! I'd love to not use plastic bags to keep my greens fresh! Lots of love to you, Wendi XOXOXO

I love this thread so much! fruitgirl, how do you keep your greens from wilting if you don't have them in some kind of container with in the fridge? (I giggled when I saw your feet with the oranges!)

Thanks, David. I'm not eating chemicals (I'm 100% organic) and the only processing I do is in the food processor and Vitamix. :-P I do, however, consume pink salt (at least once a day) and some nama shoyu (a few times a week). It just seemed strange to all of a sudden be experiencing the edema when the only thing that changed that I could tell was the temperature and my water intake. Today

pampam, HUGE HUGS to you! Personally, I think it's impossible to be on the raw food path and then fall off it forever. Our bodies wake up on the raw and they don't let us forget. I think that's why so many people feel even sicker when they start eating cooked foods again--their bodies are rebelling and making sure the mind is hearing their message! ;-) Congratulations on having a stronger reso

rawtastic, I never had a problem from heat before like this. :-/ I'm going to keep an eye on it to see if it comes from the heat. So far, today, all is fine. pampam, I am pretty sure it's not from the water source. We have a whole-house filter, and I also use an additional countertop filter for drinking water for double filtered/cleaner water. I'd rather go thirsty than drink tap water that h

Isn't is amazing how much the news about raw vegetable contamination spreads mass hysteria, but the contamination of meats is rarely even discussed in the news? I'm not giving up my tomatoes. I've been raw almost two years, so I think I should be able to handle them if there is contamination. I hope there's a huge sale on them, too! :-) XOXOXO

I've been raw for about two years and all of a sudden I'm retaining water. I noticed it slightly in my calves about a week ago, but it didn't really seem like anything. Then this weekend my hands/fingers felt tight. Now, however, my calves and feet (particularly my left leg) are tight, swollen, and uncomfortable. I don't think I'm eating anything different. I've been trying to see if it's some

Thanks for all of the advice. My husband created a cool spreadsheet that shows my results over the past few years. It's super easy to see how much raw foods has increased my health. I'm going to ask her to test for all of the things you've all mentioned here, to see what she thinks. The last test (after about one year raw) showed low eosinophilis, absolute (as in so low it was zero)--but, I'm

Utopian Life, That's a good question. I actually ate what I thought was a raw carob treat a long time ago. Within about twenty minutes my heart was fluttering and I experienced some pain. My husband grabbed the container and noticed that it was raw cacao, not carob (we picked up the wrong container by mistake). At that time it wasn't a mental reaction (unless, of course, I somehow subconscious

Our insurance coverage is changing again, but this time to one of the worst ones around (very few doctors accept it). The fantastic holistic doctor I see won't accept it. Anyway, she said I can come in before it switches over to do another update on how well I'm doing with the raw diet. I've been consistently documenting my path to health with blood tests (to see how things are changing on the in

Does anyone have a fool-proof way to select a good watermelon? I've tried selecting the ones that have some yellow on them, the ones that have a hollow thump sound, the ones that don't have a bit of vine left on the end, but it still seems hit and miss with finding good ones. Also, how bad are non-organic watermelons? I never eat them unless they are organic, but my husband eats about one a da

What are the pros and cons of taking blue-green algae? I've never taken it, but it seems like a lot of raw foodists do. Rather than spend hours reading all kinds of stuff on the Net about it, I figured it would be easier to ask here. What have you found out about it--the pros and the cons of consuming it? Do you take it, or have you taken it? Lots of love to all of you, Wendi XOXOXO

Feed your coconut obsession, mira!! I had the obsession in the beginning of going raw, too, and they actually helped heal my body a lot (especially the cholesterol problem). As for added enzymes, do you physically feel like you need them or mentally think you should have them? I never took them and I did great. Congrats on your 2 1/2 months transition! Lots of love to you, Wendi XO

It's morning, now, and I didn't have any problems during the night. When I have problems with my heart at night, it definitely wakes me up. So, I'm left wondering if I was lucky that I only had a few twinges of heart pain after eating the cacao bar last night, or if cacao isn't what caused my heart problems in the past. I'm not willing to test it, again, though. I know others have experie

It is now two hours after consuming the raw cacao and so far, so good. I am feeling the mellow feeling that I used to experience from chocolate (like it takes the edge off, or something) and I feel peaceful. Even if I make it through the evening without any major heart problems from eating it, I don't think I'll try it again. It's just not worth the risk to my health/life. I drank some more w

I have mitral valve regurgitation (not mild, but not severe, either). It has always seemed like chocolate caused any heart irregularities to happen more often. So, I gave up all caffeine many years ago (I was addicted to dark chocolate). Well, I don't know what possessed me just now. There are some raw cacao snack bars here in my home that my husband eats. I decided I was going to eat one to

I am very fair skinned with light eyes. I have freckles (had more as a kid), and already have smile wrinkles (better than frown ones!). My family has always had sagging skin as they aged--I think it's part of our genetics. My skin used to be paler before I was raw (I've been 100% almost 1 1/2 years). Now it has a bit of color to it and I don't look so sickly (in college people sometimes said I

Here's another green smoothie challenge: It's a silly, fun one that was just started by the extremely talented Bunny Berry (quite popular new raw foodist). I absolutely LOVE her! She has an amazing personality. You'll be seeing more of her as the months go by--I don't doubt it! I like what arugula said about raw gurus--how even if they aren't perfect they are leading their followers to

Thanks for all of the information! We are definitely doing Northern California, but we haven't been able to narrow it down, yet. Our plan is to sell our home and possessions (most of them), buy a used RV, and then slowly travel to CA while having fun along the way. Sure, we'll most likely spend more money this way (the RV and slowly traveling), but it's going to be a fun adventure. So, when we

I tried mono meals for nine days and I had more energy--and slept an hour less each night. I can see myself transitioning to a simpler diet like mono meals in the future, but right now I'm emotionally not ready for the detox it will bring with it (my body is ready for the next level of health, however!). If you are curious about it, try it out. If it doesn't feel good at the time then you know

I gave up black pepper about ten years ago, when I read it was a carcinogen. I still use cayenne peppers from time-to-time, however. The longer I'm raw, however, the less I desire the spicy foods. XOXOXO

We're taking a break from laundry detergent and just using borax, to see if my daughter's itchy skin could clear up. It has! I once read that there's enough residual soap left in laundry that you can wash items up to five times and there's still soap in the water. If that's true, it's no wonder she was itching. In the past, when we've run out of laundry detergent, we've used Dr. Bronner's
