Tam, No offense taken at all, please always speak your mind. A couple of you bring up some good points and let me elaborate a little on pollination. There are, as with any industry, the great, the good, the bad, the ugly and the despicable. I have seen them all and when people come to me for advice I try to help them out by placing different options on the table and then letting them decide

There are all types of commercial beekeeping operations so please do not classify all of them as "just wrong." With that said there are two major problems that are leading to CCD (colony collapse disorder). The first is the introduction of neonicotinoid insecticides. These can be found most prevalent in corn and soybeans. The seeds are coated with this insecticide and as the pla

Just a consideration, if there are cookies in the office go ahead and make yourself a stash of raw dehydrated cookies. Pack em in a tin and tuck them in your desk. Have one when the urge arises to devour a cooked cookie.

Katz, I have fought this battle with family and as the others have indicated, do just what is best for you. How do I deal with it? Well I cook, bake, fry, and prepare the foods that my family loves (meats included) but I eat only what I have prescribed for myself; raw. Sure I can preach, and I can teach, but the bottom line is that I can not manipulate the self will of others, no matter how

Yes the honey crisps have been awesome this year. I love that sound biting into them! I have a huge bag of Jonagolds here too and they are also good this year, but the honey crisp rules.

I have learned over the years not to say anything to anyone but let the observant take notice. I am not a vegetarian, I am not a raw foodist, I am not a vegan, I simply do not lock myself into a “higher than thou” label which most people associate stereotypes with. Most people, if you inform them of our dietary ways, will immediately judge you as being ego saturated and more superior than t

Thanks for the input, perhaps it is bloating but I do not have that bloating feeling. I eat it first thing in the morning and through out the day usually as a mono. Yes, sometimes I do follow it after eating nuts, avacados, fats, so maybe it is a combination of bloating and water weight. I eat a lot of right before I expire for the evening.

I've noticed that high water fruits mixed with greens do cause seperation but most of the drinks I make are veggy based (usually the same ingredients; greens, beets, carrots, celery). For sweetness I usually blend some dates with a little bit of water and add to sweeten. If I add apple, orange, or anything acidic it seems to cause bloating.

It is watermelon season where we live and they are addictive and cheap. The sweet dark red, pink, and yellow flesh is a constant temptation, so much so that I am consuming a full melon a day. The varieties are all in season so there is a lot to pick from and a couple of bucks a melon is a steal compared to the store price. The problem is that I am gaining weight! I am wondering if it is water

We typically buy raw almonds orchard direct in 40 or 50 pound increments. After a number of years of playing the container game we now place them in freeze bags (double bagged) and keep them in the freezer, usually in a box. The bags seem to take up less space. The same applies for beans, quinoa, seeds, berries, etc.

Never having had a Vita-mix all I can say is that I do have a Waring (commercial Blender made by Bosch). It is a 3.5HP machine and has never let me down. Bosch brand blenders are typically used as bar blenders and they are excellent. Still they are expensive but slightly cheaper than the VM. Considering I wear lots of designer clothes I still have a Bosch and have not moved up to compete with

Living on a border town (Texas/Mexico) we see sugar cane fields all over the place. On the Mexican side you see all types of contraptions that remove the juice from the cane. A common one (we have seen this a few times) looks like an old style ringer washer roller set, where the rollers are either large steel pipes, coffee cans filled with cement, wooden rollers, etc (ingenious uses of things).

Something that has always intrigued me........ We have a house rabbit (8 years old) and of course she is usually an organic eater but sometimes we have little choice but to pick her up some fresh greens from Wal-Mart or other sources. What is interesting is that if we mix Wal-Mart greens in with her regular servings; she will consume only the non Wal-Mart brand. So if the rabbit won't even e

As mentioned you should be getting small doses of UV thus aiding in Vitamin D production. Full spectrum lights are 6500K or above (K=kelvin temperature value). The K value is usually mentioned on the box that contains the light bulb. The lower the K value (3000 or 3500) the more yellow the light.

As I mentioned Coco it is a decision for each and everyone to make but here is the true irony…… Almost all of the commercial fruits and nuts in the US are produced via the use of pollination by commercial beekeepers. This includes organic fields as well as commercial or industrial pollination requirement crops. There are not enough natural pollinators at this time in history to produce l

As a former Commercial Beekeeper and Commercial Packer I would agree that nowadays honey production is nothing more than a numbers game that disregards the livelihood of bees. What isn’t about profits nowadays? Many honey bees die due to suffocation from traveling from pollination yard to yard and others are killed by pesticide spays. Others are crushed, disabled, lost, etc during the husb
