If you're going to try other oils, make sure they are cold pressed. The sunflower and sesame you asked about can be found cold pressed. Coconut is a popular alternative, but it tastes heavily of coconut. Alternatively, you could skip the oil entirely and try avocado or tahini as Sunberry suggested or also soaking some nuts and creating a creamy dressing (something like blending soaked cashew

I haven't noticed an off-taste with refrigerated avocado, but have been able to keep them for an additional week after ripening, which has been great. On a couple of occasions when I have put a few mangos from a case in the fridge to slow ripening, I've noticed the refrigerated ones take on a different texture, slightly grainy and sometimes ropey. Trive recently posted a nice link on the top

I see what you're saying. I agree it does seem more like a whim, fad, or even political position to go raw paleo than a dietary consideration.

Hey, Mislu. It sounds like you're already looking on the bright side. Your compost may rest until the spring and then suddenly pick up quickly. The pile compacts as it decomposes, so don't be afraid to put too much in. I'm not an eternal optimist, but my mother is. How does she do it? She's incredibly forgetful, lol. She metaphorically smacks into a brick wall, picks herself up and smack

Tamukha, I'm not advocating a raw paleo diet. I got the impression (perhaps wrongly) that Powerlifer was just discovering the wide world of raw meat eaters and commenting on how it wasn't new. I was also unclear on why you say that there is little anthropological evidence for raw meat when it is pretty well accepted that raw animal products have been eaten for centuries, if not millennia someti

Carpaccio, ceviche, gravlax, sushi, sashimi, beef tartare, hoe, yukhoe, live bugs, raw seal, some brined/pickled fish... Nothing new about that. The crazy part about it is eating it when it's obviously putrefied. Raw meat needs to be extremely fresh. I think there is some evidence of it being sustaining in the arctic where fresh veg and fruits aren't available. I think it was because th

Those videos were neat. strawberries are really sensitive to touch and bacteria. Good advice, suncloud. Another item to note is that some fruits are ethylene producing like bananas, avocados, tomatoes, and apples. Storing these together will speed up ripening of these fruits. Separating them will slow down the process. Storing ethylene producing foods close to ethylene sensitive foods

I don't agree with much of that article. The author seems to confuse concepts and pose opinion as fact. First off, fish can't ferment. It's not high enough in carbohydrate. Fermentation starts with carbohydrates by definition and produces alcohol or acids. Putrefation starts with protein and can produce ammonia. Rancidification starts with fats. Rotting is a general term for decomposition of organic materials. Fermentation is a more specific process that converts the sugars and carbohydrates to acids and alcohols. Powerlifer is right that fermentation produces carbon dioxide as an off-gas rather than ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, which account for smell of 'rot'. Rotten cabbage and sauerkraut are not quite the same. You might hav

Yeah, you can, but it will turn the skins black and if you're looking to store less in the fridge, bananas would be among the last produce you'd store there.

Definitely refrigerate berries and leafy greens like lettuce and spinach. It's also a good idea to refrigerate celery. Herbs like parsley and dill can be kept with their stems in a glass of water on the kitchen window. Fruits with thick peels (not bananas!) can generally be stored at room temperature for several days to a week, longer if you have a cool environment like a cellar or garage t

I think the market would be plenty big enough for incandescents. Although the market may have died down in the US, I would think lighting industry would still be able to take advantaged of the growing middle class in the rest of the world. Reina, you can find these types of places in the US. I currently live in a middle-class neighborhood in a city on over half an acre (as is most of the neighborhood). We do have a car for convenience, but just one and it's not necessary if someone is really set against it. I am two blocks from a bus stop, and 4 blocks from a large shopping strip. Commercial farming isn't allowed on lots this s

You can cure olives in water or salt water like sauerkraut. Check the links in the thread, or look up some more about water, brine, or salt curing.

Black olives are mature green olives. Black canned olives (Mission olives) are usually cured in lye, which does darken them a little more than other forms of curing, but not much. You can cure both black and green the same way. The flavor differences often result from the natural flavor differences between olive species combined with storing the olives (after curing is complete) in different bri

I bought a bunch of raw olives one time and tried water curing them. You basically soak them in water for a few weeks, changing the water every few days. I didn't like the result. The purpose of curing is to remove the bitter oleuropein. It can be done with plain water (very short shelf life), salt water (extends the shelf life), pure salt (extracts both water and oleuropein), or lye and wa

If you read the article, you'll notice that he consumes a protein shake, multivitamins, as well as vegetables along with his twinkies. I think the better lesson in this that many seem to be missing in that the 'markers' that we use to assess health currently aren't very good. For one, weight is used as a measure of fitness, and it just isn't the case.
