Where do you live? If you have a farmer's market, try to make friends with the organic guys - if you're not picky they might cut you a deal, like "I'll give you $20 a week if you fill a box with ripe produce." It helps them get rid of the stuff that doesn't sell so well that week, and you get a bargain. Chinatowns are the best places for cheap (though not necessarily organic) sea

Harvested my first batch of kombucha last weekend. The scoby that grew was so tiny (more like a wee jellyfish) I considered it to be a dud batch. Nonetheless I bottled it for a 2nd ferment with juiced ginger, pineapple, lemon & lime (going for that ginger beer taste). On day 5 the bottles started fizzing over and popping their tops- it worked! Taste is not quite there yet, but my next b

I just started my own Kombucha this week - trying to cultivate a scoby from a bottle of GTs. I've read as much as I could on the subject & I'm rather sure that the sugar is only food for the yeast i.e. if you ferment long enough you won't actually be ingesting any sugar. Rejuvelac made fron sprouted rye is easy, too, & doesn't require sugar or anything caffeinated.

Amen to that! Hope I live to see that day. I have been watching that Jaime Oliver show out of sheer amazement - this chef guy from the UK that is trying to get people to eat better & improve school lunches in West Virgina. It's such a load of horsesh!t - he's ecouraging people to eat about as well as they did in the '50s - loads of 'healthy' of milk, meat, and grains - but hey they're wh

I got results of some bloodwork this morning. My CO2 was low (19) and my bilirubins were elevated (1.7). Bilirubins were elevated a few years ago, too. Makes me wonder how bad I abused my liver in my SAD days (socially akward driiiiinker). Anyone ever worked on liver repair through raw foods / herbs? ~CJJ

My fav treat is chocolate pudding: avocado + dates + cacao + a touch of agave and a pinch of salt. I usually make a bug batch then freeze little servings that I can bring with me to work. I think it's from one of the Jennifer Cornbleeth books =)

Hummus: I find chickpeas spoil really easily when you sprout them and then the hummus is only so-so. Find a recipe for zuchinni-based hummus - MUCH more like the original version. I live near Chinatown so I'm spoiled for choice on seaweeds (cheap and lots of selection). I like to throw wakame or lavera in onion-y, garlic-y "soups." Better than piling on the salt I suppose.

I've been off raw for a while (4 months or so), but still vegetarian. I got a head-cold 4 weeks ago that turned into a sinus infection weeks 2. A few days into the cold I started getting this 'feeling' to the left of my belly button. Not painful per se, more like heavy and sore. In the last week I've had a lot of pain in my ribs and small of my back that comes and goes. I've so far had blood

A buddy of min was in jail for 6 mos. (NorCal) - he got coffee + toast for breakfast, then white bread sandwiches with 2-3 deli slices + an apple or orange for lunch & dinner. Places outside the produce-belt have it far worse (no produce, period is my understanding). Prisons, like school lunch programs, are a tremdous business with loads of government contracts up for grabs like food, clot

I buy berries at the farmer's market once a week and find that they will definitely go bad by 'day 5' so I rinse, de-stem, and freeze to get me through a whole week of breakfast smoothies. IMO frozen organic berries from the market are better than no fresh berries and frozen berries from Safeway. (Speaking of I looked on a bag of frozen mango I bought from them this morning: picked in Mexico

I loved Lara Bars but stopped buying them once General Mills bought out the company. As far as I'm concerned GM is on the same level with mega-fast-food chains and Wal-Mart (evil). I've read somewhere that mushrooms purify the soil, i.e. suck up all the bad stuff so I think you're good-to-go if they are organic mushrooms.

And recommendations for mercury detox? I've read cilantro, garlic, and chlorella tabs have anecdotal results. I'm getting my old mercury amalgams out today and expect to receive a good dose of mercury vapor in the process...

Hi Jon, Is it more about the "waking up in the morning," part or the taste? I was able to quit coffee when I started dragging my sorry butt outta bed an hour earlier and hitting the gym/jogging/exercise DVDs before work. If it's the taste...hard to say. I used to have coffee as a dessert, now I usually have a little taste of raw chocolate puddings or truffles.

That's a really great point, Jodi. I am terrified about what I read in regard to fat and the human body. Trying to stay uber low-fat seems to lead me to crashing every few days. These are the two "fats are bad" sources that always come to mind: 1. This site spends a lot of time tearing down a diet with more than 10% fat through a lot of what Ornish, Mcdougall, Barnard, studies s

QuoteIt can get kind of tricky for me eating in public... I don't like people knowing I'm not one of "them" Personal experience: If someone is nosing around regarding what I'm eating, and I don't feel 100% comfortable in the situation explaining the "raw" thing, sometimes I underplay it, fib a little, and get them involved.. I usually say something like, "Oh, my friend

Arg! I was informed today that I have a cavity in my wisdom tooth. (It's my 4th cavity ever so not that bad, but still no party. On the plus-side I'm getting my remaining two mercury amalgams out and replaced. I'd love some inspiration from this experience - do any of you long term raw foodies find that your teeth stop turning against you? I'd love to get the rest of these suckers on my

Welcome rcullen! Though I consider myself still 'transitioning' to raw; here's something that really helped me bridge the gap: I spent every morning for a few months checking craigslist until I found a Vitamix blender (used is way more afoordable). I hear Blendtecs are good too, basically anything with some real horsepower, not the cheap-o ones from Walgreens. I would say a good secondary

I too have a bony ass - here's what I do: I have a 8+ hour a day office job. I bought one of those fitness balls (after 6 months of wanting to do it, but being too embarassed). It's awesome because you're getting a work-out the whole time / you can't just relax on it, plus it forms to your butt. I seem to have a habit of bouncing around a lot on it - good for the abs! (Warning: it will

Thanks for the great info! QuoteDoes anyone else notice them? Just curious; what is your diet? Are you a raw foodist/vegan/juicer, etc.? They tend to become visible (puff up) at the slightest hint of a cold or allergy. Regularly, they are present to the touch. *I'm vegan minus honey *Usually raw in cycles ((80% raw for a week followed by a crash of "raw all day + cooked dinner"

I had mono in 1997, and since then, the swollen lymphnodes in my neck never really went away. (Better, for sure, but still present). Over the years I've asked various doctors who said "it's fine," and the opposite, the doctor finds them and asks me, "did you ever have mono?" None of my 'web research,' has really told me anything about what's going on...anyone know?

I eat a fair share of quinoa sprouts because it's a quickie calorie boost on those days when I'm low on fruit in the cupboards. (Not necessarily recommending this, tho). They don't taste like much, digest just fine, but one thing to keep in mind: some websites claim that quinoa sprouts are 'very acidifying' (I've also read it the other way, too, that they're alkalinizing) so I'm not sure what t

Anyone else experience this / know what it's about: Last week I had a pretty big cooked (vegan) binge - this week I'm back at about 80% raw. Typically, in the past, when I'm raw I really can't stand a lot of raw garlic (too strong!). I might use like a quarter of a clove in a dressing. Now? I cannot get enough. It thought it might be something along the lines of seeking out an overstimul
