Thanks for all the responses! la_veronique: QuoteWhy do you say you are "torn"? I am not sure I understand your question. It's difficult to ascribe to someone's diet recommendations when they themselves don't look healthy. The raw foods group in my city has several raw folks, who at one point claim they were obese (like Victoria), who now look great (and no longer have to take in

There seems to be 2 sides on "fats" in the raw world. You have your 80/10/10 fans; (it's a book by Doug Graham). The breakdown here is that anything over 10% of fat in your diet (by calorie not weight) will clog your bloodstream and compromise your health. This prescription is a lot of fruit and no overt fats. Various cooked diets operate on this principle, too, Ornish, McDougal

I'd use mangoes to sub for tomatoes in dressings/salsa. You can also switch to pesto-sauces for "pastas." Pine nuts are a good sub for cashews in non-dessert type dishes.

Does anyone have an opinion on what Victoria Boutenko promotes versus her appearance? I LOVE reading her books, and some of her speeches I've downloaded are downright inspirational...but then I'm torn. She's not what springs to mind when I think of a healthy woman. Frankly, IMO she appears rather overweight for someone who's been raw for over a decade. What is that about? Her recipes are p

I second Bryan! I've also had some bizarre-o reactions to non-organic produce (same kind of reaction I get to jellyfish stings - nausea, headaches, shortness of breath) - tropical fruits and non-organic berries especially. If you have a little room you can always grow your own ( Square Foot Gardening ) to ensure no pesticides (you may want to have your soil tested first).

I was on "the patch" for about 6 mos. before I felt I had to stop the cycle of horrible, horrible, chemicals (never again!). A friend (who studies TCM) put me on chlorella tabs to help remove the synthetic hormones from my body plus sent me for a few round of acupuncture. I don't remember having a hard time re-adjusting after dumping th patch; but chlorella is at least easy to fi

I have two 32 oz. vaccum seal thermoses that are great for storing smoothies overnight. the night before work I make a batch of smoothie, and a big salad (keep avocados whole and romaine unchopped until you're ready to eat). On Monday's I bring in a bag of oranges or apples that I keep on the desk and share with co-workers. Making big batches of dehyrated 'raw' crackers / cookies / breads are

1.) Get tested first to see if you NEED B-12. 2.) The body can store reserves of B-12 for up to 5 years, so don't worry about deficiency unless you have other health factors at play. 3.) B-12 used to be in our soil, right? Well, that's because it is naturally occuring in @#$%&...and other excretions. (Looking for the data on this) I've read B-12 is 10-12 times more prevelent in ejeculator

Mushrooms function in nature as "soil cleansers." Specifically they are good at uptaking heavy metals from soil. I think they're fine to eat as long as you're getting them grown organically,

I've been having little success keeping on raw simply because I'm not getting in adequate calories. Also, I'm striving for low-fat / no oil so it's not as easy as drizzling oil on everything to boost the calorie count. Even with eating every 3 hours (mostly green smoothies and salads) by night-time I'm barely over 1000 calories....so surprise, surprise, I crash and pig out every few days on coo

Hi Guys - can anyone give me an idea of what a "pound" of greens looks like? I was assuming it was a "bunch" but then I realized that Whole Foods "bunches" change size depending on the season...

I keep a daily log going on Nutridiary to keep up on the calories/nutrients I'm getting. I'm noticing that every single day my Calcium is under the 100% mark. (I throw at least 4 cups of leafy greens in my smoothies every day and I eat sesame seed a few times a week). Maybe I'm not eating enough calcium-rich foods? I'm wondering if the Nutridiary amounts are inflated to account for people who

I took Victoria Boutenko's advice and got my hands on a jaw exerciser. Anyone else tried this before? What were your results? After two days my teeth are noticeable whiter.

I managed to pull a tendon in my foot 2 weeks ago and have had a swollen foot/ankle ever since. The doctor wrote me a prescription for ultra-strength ibuprofen to act an an anti-inflammatory. I'm not looking forward to taking pills for 3 weeks. Anyone had this problem before? If I amp up the raw-ness (I'm only about 50% these days) should this help knock out the inflammation? Thanks!

I've read a few times over that most women's monthly bleeding stops on raw foods and that bleeding is actually a sign of blood toxicity due to cooked foods. What's your personal experience?

Hey Veggiefreak - you may have luck meeting like-minded guys if you go the political route. A vegan diet is one of the easiest political statements a person could make, and those people are usually involved in some other type of activity. Check out your local anti-war, save the trees, animal rights, human rights, plant-a-tree, Naomi Klein read-and-discuss circle, (whatever you're into, really)

I was thrilled to see organic mangoes at Whole Foods, but they're from Ecuador. I was under the impressions that all imported produce was nuked. I'm in NorCal, if that helps. Anyone know if what I'm eating is alive?

*sigh* no more fresh fruit. At least not around here. The mangoes are gone, the oranges are from Australia, the watermelons (from Mexico) have no taste. I have no idea what to do with all the pumpkins they pile up in big displays. Trying to stay raw and local...

Keitt Mango + Kale smoothies. Drool.... I've found a food that makes me feel as good as chocolate cake used to! I've been making emergency stops at Whole Foods every two days because I keep running out of mango. I also made a grape + strawberry + chard one last week that wasn't half bad.

Last week at the farmer's market, waiting in line with my arms full of romaine and tomatoes, I was was actually attracted to the big mountains of grapes on the table in front of me. They looked beautiful and my heart was racing because I had thought as much. I think because they were small like blueberries, and not like the large squishy ones in see in the supermarket, I was not intimidated. I

I set my goals entirely too high. I made 80/10/10 work for about 3 days before I had a bad day at work and came home sobbing feeling the absolute most acute anxiety over job sucks / too old to go back to school / school costs money / what if I make the wrong decision / I'm unhappy / I have no friends / aaaaaaah. My boyfriend sat me down and told me that my goals were entirely too high, which

Hi Happyway, I've noticed some truly great things on raw so far including better energy, better digestion, less blemishes. All these things I've seen make sense to me from a scientific standpoint: better fuel = better performance. But things like someone's nose getting smaller? Or cavities repairing themselves? I'm interested if these things are really possible, and if so, what is the scie

I've done quite a bit of "raw" reading over the past few months, both book & blog. Some of what I've read (mostly blog info) leaves me quite skeptical. I thought I'd take a moment to list some of the more outlandish-sounding things I've read. Is there truth to any of these? 1 RF diet changing iris color 2 improving eyesight (I've read claims of people throwing away their glass

I have no idea how "eco-friendly" this is: but I use "green bags" my mother sent me for the stuff I know I won't eat within 3 days. Keeps ginger fresh for at least 2 weeks.

I've got two new fruits under my belt: Blueberries: definite keeper. They remind me of cherries with the sweet/tart sensation. I'm excited to pick up a tub at the farmer's market tomorrow. Honeydew Melon: chewier than I expected. Tasted quite "perfumy." I was eating this in a bowl with watermelon. blueberries, kiwi and pineapple, and found Honeydew to be the worst of the bunch.

It is so glaringly apparent how much of my time over that past 6 years has been spent in bars, or at parties, drinking and eating crap with people I'm not that close with. It's even more apparent that every single friend I've made since moving to the west coast has been a drinking buddy. Now that I'm toning down my inner rockstar, I'm at a complete loss of what to do. Where do raw foodies go o
