Mallow - you _can_ do that! You could adapt the kale recipe here - leave out the olive oil and only use one avocado, maybe use spinach instead of kale. I also make a 'mashed potatoes' by blending cauliflower and avocado (with some nutmeg, black pepper, lemon - you can add whatever seasonings you like) - you can play with the ratio of cauliflower to avocado so that the fat content works for

It sounds like your mouth was irritated by the pineapple. If you're not careful with pineapple, it can make your tongue bleed! Ian's advice of smaller chunks so as to avoid it contacting the corners of your mouth is good. Also, avoid eating the fibrous core of the pineapple (the middle part) as this is the sharpest part. I'm not sure of the science of it but pineapple contains this enzyme, b

Hey All, I live in the SF Bay Area but am thinking of visiting family in London for a week or two around Christmas. I've been a rawfooder for years but never connected with the London raw food scene - just wondering whether there are any gatherings going to happen there over the break: I'd love to come to a potluck or something. love Ela

Hey Ian, I help co-ordinate the East Bay potluck and it's a really lovely gathering in a yoga studio - the energy helps! I'm planning on coming to the SF potluck this coming Sunday - maybe will meet you there? cheers, Ela

Hey there, One of the lifelong problems that probably (as disguised blessings) led me to raw food is/was celiac. One of the best things about being a rawfoodist is that it just removes the entire gluten issue for me. I have discovered that I don't do well with starches in general (I think I always knew this actually), so I tend to avoid all kinds of sprouted grains as well as roots like yams a

Ani - I'd love to help you in any way I can. One thing that I would like to raise, though, is that the food is only part of the picture. I agree that it is one of the most crucially important parts but would like to offer the suggestion that when one is digesting one's emotions well, one can digest food well also. From my own experience, when I was full of pain and unhappiness and unconnected

This is a really good question - they say that we're meant to be tropical animals and every time winter comes round and it's time to wear layers and layers again, I feel in myself that this is true. THAT SAID - I am continually grateful for how much less I'm feeling the cold nowadays! It seems like the longer I'm a rawfooder, the less I feel the cold. Even before raw, I used to be the coldest

As the leaves turn and fall and the wind sweeps them up into piles, chilling bones as it goes, and the sun's angle lowers and I recall once again that my roots are in the tropics, that months of wearing layers of clothing are here, I feel such gratitude for the late bounty that California offers in consolation. Melons and figs are gone, but oh, the persimmons! Last week, picking persimmons, I

More than anything, eczema is 'caused' by stress. I had really bad eczema as a little kid and yes, I am allergic to gluten - but I would generally only break out in fairly specific situations - usually when my parents went away for periods of time and left me staying with people where maybe I wasn't comfortable. Ani, I have read your posts for a long time and I really condole for the difficult

Hey Rawrr, I think you're doing a really good thing for yourself. My friend whom I live with, who's been a high fat rawfooder for a couple years or so, has recently decided to go low fat, high fruit, and it seems to be having such a good effect on him! Definitely nicer to be around, and not just because we're now more in line diet-wise. But he's also trying to get precise about 'how much fa

Sounds like you have a _lot_ of sleep deprivation to catch up on! Take care, keep warm, stay horizontal as much as possible, drink plenty of water; if you're hungry some coco water or some grapes sounds good but I wouldn't say that your day needs to 'consist' of those things so much as of rest Hope this is some help!

I make cauliflower mashed potatoes in the vitamix with the main ingredients being cauliflower, avocado and lemon juice (and then add whatever spices you want). You can keep the avocado to a low proportion to keep it low fat - that's what I prefer to do. Hope it went well!

Yes - I never add oil when I make recipes and have noticed (at potlucks and restaurants and such) that if I eat something with more than a very small amount of oil in it, I feel really uncomfortable. And it's not that I can't digest the fat - I'm fine with reasonable quantities of avocadoes, nuts, cocos, etc. If you're following a recipe, you can frequently just leave out the oil, or add a lit

I love how you share the story of your explorations and body listenings, and can relate so well to your story of the cacao/avo pudding and your body preferring another mango. I've had that experience so many times and I think that eventually I'll either have to become part of a rawfood preparation business or just stop doing it: I love and have some talent for making recipes but seldom actually w

I agree with David - beautiful and concise advice! Is there any chance that you could get to bed earlier than that? Getting plenty of rest and sleep is _key_ when your body is fighting something, especially in this cold and dark time of year. When your body is trying to get rid of something, it needs as much energy as possible to concentrate on that, which means that if you eat at all, it's b

I took a look at the article and feel like it should be pointed out that its main concern is the toxicity of avocados for birds. I felt sad to read that nonetheless, some humans experience the allergic reaction too. I don't understand the anaphylactic shock phenomenon and why it's seemingly becoming more common. Wonder whether the vogue for vaccinations and sanitized environments encourages peopl

Shep, once again I'm full of admiration. Having kids to take care of adds a whole new dimension to the whole raw game and makes it much trickier to know the truth because everyone has an opinion and puts emotional pressure on you. (I have a good friend with small kids who goes in and out of raw for a lot of that kind of reason). Glad that you're taking care of yourself! love Ela

Hi Amy, Sending you love and support also. Most of my family is in Israel, so I've spent time there and know how food-based a lot of the culture is there. Whereabouts are you staying? Israel actually grows _wonderful_ produce but I agree that it isn't always easy to find. I was last there exactly a year ago and the best produce was the romaine lettuce (chassa) (huge heads, wonderful fla

It seems to be the experience of many people that when first going raw they feel the cold _bitterly_ and intensely, but that after some time on raw they find themselves not quite so sensitive. I was always a very cold person even before going raw. For my first couple of years raw I was _freezing_ - and worse, when I was cold like that I had no energy and didn't want to do anything at all. For

Shep, it is really courageous of you to come out and admit that. I guess I was so brief in my first post in this thread but actually I have a lot to say on the subject. Despite the fact that the raw food diet was such tremendous help to me in recovering from a very severe eating disorder, I'm wary of recommending it as a panacea. I know people who developed eating disorders through becoming r

Greetings! Yes, becoming a rawfooder has been an essential component in my recovery from a very severe eating disorder. In my case it was anorexia, but all the eating disorders are really related manifestations of deep pain. And whilst becoming a rawfooder has helped tremendously in my healing, it was by no means the only factor. I have had tremendous help gradually learning to open up to the
