Tahukha, The petition mentioned in last years' CBSnews article is the very same as that mentioned in the OP's opening link, a petition to review the APS (American Physical Society) "National Policy" statement of 2007. Again, the *APS* issued this "National Policy" statement in 2007, what Lewis describes as sounding like it was arrived at "over lunch", and Halid

Conflict over global warming policy within the American Physical Society has been reported on for some time. Here's an excerpt from a CBS news report December of 09 -- "Socolow's research institute at Princeton has received well over $20 million in grants dealing with climate change and carbon reduction, plus an additional $2 million a year from BP and still more from the federal govern

He does. Hal Lewis' resignation letter was addressed to APS President Curtis G. Callan, Jr., Princeton University. Princeton scientists are currently working on global warming research funded by grants of at least 20 million. Late in the letter Lewis does note the possible connection to Princeton funding, though he states he's wary of assigning motive.

I see, well then if the desired degree of accuracy in that last constant (655.0955) is 4 decimal places then that might imply the answer to be accurate to within 3 decimal places, so P might = 1204.361 kcal, or rounded to 1204.36 accounting for just the significant figures of that last constant, for the example given in wikipedea -- "According to this formula, the woman in the example abo

Oh, that should have read significant figures, not "decimal places". The significant figures of the constants should reflect the number of significant figures expected in the variables, in this case 5 significant figures. That would mean weight might be recorded at, oh say, 56.456kg, height at 177.82cm and age at 32.765yrs, to give a BMR of 1892 kcal (four significant figures obviou

The American Physical Society can be evasive as well.. "There is no truth to Dr. Lewis’ assertion that APS policy statements are driven by financial gain. To the contrary, as a membership organization of more than 48,000 physicists, APS adheres to rigorous ethical standards in developing its statements. The Society is open to review of its statements if members petition the APS Council

If never heard that line of reasoning. What I find devious is the American Physical Society publishing their "National Policy...07.1 CLIMATE CHANGE(Adopted by Council on November 18, 2007)" without a proper review of the science as evidenced by the controversy caused within its ranks, and by going outside their field in conclusions drawn -- "If no mitigating actions are taken

I can see why Hal Lewis is disappointed with the APS, the American Physical Society has its own constitution which Hal Lewis and fellow members abided by in submitting a petition to form a Topical Group to discuss Climate Change. Those in authority responded by informally proposing (in compromise) a group to discuss simply the physics of "Climate"

The term "unbloody sacrifice" is not universal of course in the church. The LDS references John 6:35 -- "And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst." "The sacrament is an ordinance instituted to remind members of the Church of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, t

Mislu, those are good points about bones and evidence. I try to see things as they are. When in John 6 He tells his followers they must eat his flesh and drink his blood he did not qualify the statement and many left. Those who stayed, while not understanding they had faith there must be a meaning to it. It turned into the "unbloody sacrifice" we have in the church to this day, sti

Has anyone tried making their own salt? In Brittany they use a series of drying ponds in order to separate out unwanted minerals like chalk which settles out as the sea water loses the first 50-80% of its moisture to evaporation (I can see tiny needle-like gypsum crystals settle out as I reduce sea water to seasalt). When moisture is reduced to 1% the salt crystals can be washed or stockpile

Well, Jesus left it to others to carry on saying even greater things would follow. I've always been most fond of John who is the only one to give an account of the raising of Lazarus, and that written in John's Gospel dated by some around 90 AD, well after Paul's letters of around 60 AD, so the story of Lazarus may have been unknown to Paul (all four Gospels were purhaps written after Paul's let

Mislu, I went back and read a few chapters in I Corinthians. Apostle Paul and Mary Baker Eddy have similar intensities and vocabularies but reach different conclusions. Paul's mission is to preach the Gospel and considers Jesus to have been the "first fruit" of those raised from the dead. What about Lazarus who was also raised after 3 days by Jesus himself? So "what will it be

A novel approach indeed. Mary Baker Eddy believed in the Holy Spirit as the "key"? to understanding scripture, so when it says Jesus breathed his last Eddy feels free to believe it only appeared that way and that actually if he was walking and talking three days later it was because he never really died. I have to admit to always thinking the scene where Jesus appeared to the disciple

Mislu, it's more that a Christian Scientist would identify with the teachings of the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy, rather than the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, IMO as a non Christian Scientist. I wasn't identifying them properly by saying they were "non mainstream Protestants". They are not Protestants at all. My mistake. I think faith healing works and seldom worry ab
