Tumukha, this blog says it slightly differently, by an Eastern Orthodox I believe -- "Kind of a combination of posts here. I have always wondered why we never heard the OT in liturgy. I was told that it was read during daily vespers but, I never see them in our liturgical calendar. Am I missing something. The Old Testament still has some beautiful spirituality to it even if is now preempt

By "Old Covenant" I mean Old Testament, roughly in the spirit of Hebrews -- Hebrews 8:13 (King James Version) In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away. JWs have daily or weekly readings that treat the Old Testament pretty much the same as the New, at least that's my impression after many discuss

One of my favorite recent movies is The Fifth Element where the four elements are wind, earth, fire and water. Under the Five Element system the fifth usually has something to do with spirit... intangibles maybe. "Space/time" might be a fifth element. What is the nature of space? Struggled with the origin of matter recently I came upon the "vibrating universe" theory which

Speaking of wealth, greed and opportunists, the JW who asked me if I would sell my house to him might have been a shark, according to my brother anyway who was visiting once during a JW visit. I'm not that good at reading people. What the heck, I can always build another one, but those who prey on others get a certain reputation. It takes all kinds and I still loved the guy and his wife and t

Earlier in the thread I said JWs don't identify themselves as Christians but as Jehovah's Witnesses. I don't think that's quite true. The JW organization does consider itself a christian religion, and I recall one JW suggesting to me a reading of the Sermon on the Mount, a discourse of Jesus as found in the gospels, where such teachings as "love your enemy" can be found. I still

I'm still confused by the "Himalayan Crystal Salt" trademark terminology, and suppose it varies by seller as well. "Salt washing" could refer to washing off the dust and grime from mining and handling, or to a production process where the salt is dissolved in water allowing impurities to settle out, then allowed to crystallize in solar evaporation ponds, essentially produc

I don't doubt it, powerlifer, the Japanese get on average 50 to 80 times the WHO upper limit yet don't seem to suffer, yet the warnings persist for those who exceed the "10-fold normal value" -- "3.2.2 Excessive intake from food In the normal human thyroid there is no real evidence that moderate acute excess iodine intake decreases thyroidal uptake of iodine largely because the

Thanks, Lee H, for the link to the study in China, which cautions in their conclusion about increasing iodine intakes in regions where it is already more than adequate, like the county that had high naturally occuring iodine in their water supply. The European Union (2002) notes that areas with traditionally ample iodine intake (like Japan) need not monitor iodine intake quite the same way as

"It is important not to over-consume iodine as it has a relatively narrow range of intakes that reliably support good thyroid function (about 100 to 300 micrograms per day). Someone consuming large amounts of iodised salt or seaweeds could readily overdo it. Excessive iodine has a complex disruptive effect on the thyroid and may cause either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, in susceptible

Hyperthyroidism is the price of excess... You're right Lee H. If I might add, too much iodine can result in either hyper or hypothyroidism depending on the case. It takes time for the body to adapt to h

Whole sea salt might have a significant amount of sulfate (8% of weight), the 3rd most prominent element after chloride and sodium (86% by weight). The other 6% is of minerals like calcium that seem to be in very small amounts compared to what the body requires. Did anyone notice that the Himalayan "Crystal" salt as sold by Mercola and Swanson might be ground and washed (purified) s

Oh, I see powerlifer, I was just thinking of the sodium. Himalayan "Crystal" salt at one website has 573mg sodium per 1/4 teaspoon serving (1.5g) , which is comparable to the sodium content in table salt .

Speaking of salt marketing, it's extraordinary what some put in print -- "The Crystal Salt from the Himalayas does not burden your body as other salts do. It is very difficult for your body to absorb too much crystal salt since there are powerful and effective feedback loops that regulate this process. Natural crystal salt always promotes a healthy balance and does not contribute to high

"Are there any proven differences between Himalayan pink salt and sea salt?" The traditional source for Himalayan pink salt appears to be the Khewra salt mine in Pakistan -- The Wikipedia link for Himalayan salt says the term is for marketing purposes and can also refer to salt from Poland, Utah... Rock salt is nice because it can be ground to suit. The home-made sea salt I use is soggy to wet so is difficult to use. Morton has come out with an iodized sea salt which contains a small amount of dextrose (glucose) so it will behave like table salt (it will pour even in damp weather). It's table salt, and works for me as well as any other salt. I hear the arguments against table salt but d

The way I understand it Himalayan salt is mined from the earth and so will vary depending on where in the earth it is taken, all sources being ancient sea beds. Sea salt varies more depending on the processing method, less on the location though an inland water like the Dead Sea might have much different mineral composition.

In New England there's not much either locally grown. My organic carrots come from California, organic kale from Texas, coconuts from the Dominican Republic. My backyard dandelion, chives, potatoes and local seaweed are about the best thing going for me, eaten raw as much as possible though not as a purist. Juiced or blended carrots are more "warming" than carrot sticks, IMO. Iodized

The mushrooms are all over here this fall season though it's more the different shapes and colors that I'm drawn too, like a white softball or a little hut. I wish I could sense them better. I can't quite figure the meaning of the scents, whether it's plant communication or our spidey senses at work...

Animal sacrifice went out with the destruction of the temple in Jeruselem in 79 AD, thank God, though prior to that sacrifices are tough to take, I agree. Jim Walker of nobeliefs.com wrote another article on atoms (JWs are science guys too), and though I'm more into the string theory of matter, his closing comment caught my attention -- "If you delve into the strange world of atoms, yo

The Turks are on board with the study of orthorexia nervosa (ON) doing another large study in 2008 -- They see the classification orthorexia nervosa as another tool in the study of eating habits, finding increased incidence of ON in Turkish women, yet noting in Italy it's more with men maybe due to cultural influences.

Brome, I stopped earlier at a patch of wild grapes that were known to me to taste like Concords but could only find a few. Later in the day I bicycled into the forest and actually went just past some without noticing until the fragrance registered. I turned around and there they were, growing in the understory, not very sweet but large and plump in nice little clusters. I'm guessing they a

These possible flesh eating proteases from eating certain (mainly unripe?) pineapples reminded me of the Venus Flytrap, the bug eating plant, which uses possibly both proteases and acids working together to digest their prey. It's a great plant defence against someone like me who is not very resistant to these enzymes and acids. As someone suggested, eating too much of the skin (and core) is al

The notion that people need both leafy greens and seaweed to be healthy is not going to sit well with those who follow the 80/10/10 diet who pretty much regard seaweed as toxic don't they? It's not surprising for that idea to be countered with anti-seaweed propaganda.

Some say there are two Biblical creation accounts, one of priestly origin and one tribal; 3 accounts of loading the ark, and there are 4 gospels, Mathew, Mark, Luke and John. The authors could have declined to record various tribal, priestly and gospel stories and beliefs but instead wrote them all down for others to decide. Ha, this is the sort of thing that made the JWs (and my priest) wa
