It sounds like you're all set, but I agree with the Oxo decision. What I like about mine is that it has finer, smaller holes than most. It's good for spinning things like teeny clover sprouts that would get washed out with the water using many other spinners.

I second the recommendation of "Wild Fermentation". The author covers a lot of ground, explaining how to make a wide variety of fermented foods.

P.S. The very first post I ever made on this forum was when I was just thinking about trying raw, and I had doubts about my ability to pull it off during the NYS winter. Over time, this has become less and less of a concern for me. The more I experience and read, the more possibilities there seem to be.

I'm in upstate NY too. This time of year, local apples really become the calorie-wise staple of my diet. I went berry picking several times over the summer, and my freezer is now well stocked with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and tart cherries. I spoke to a local blueberry farmer who makes blueberry vinegar, and made special arrangements with him for a jug of his vinegar unpasteurized.

Buying an expensive blender like the Vitamix is a big decision. If you have a blender already, I would recommend making smoothies with that for a while. You can see how much you get into them, and see where you might want extra power to make them smoother or faster. It's easier to see why you might spend the big bucks, when you've spent enough time with a regular blender for comparison. If yo

Thanks, WY. Next time I will definitely alternate sprigs of parsley with another green. I'm intrigued by the effect. My best guess is that the juice contains too much dissolved soluble fiber to remain a liquid. That doesn't explain why it remains a liquid long enough to drip out of the juicer, but that's probably just part of the mysterious behavior of soluble fiber.

This morning, I tried juicing parsley with my Omega 8006. It worked very well, and I was happy with how dry the stringy pulp was. The weird thing happened when I was done and tried to pour the juice. It had gone almost instantly solid, and wouldn't pour. It had the texture of tub butter kept on the counter. I really should have taken a picture. Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Is p

Any raw vinegar should explicitly say "raw", "unpasteurized", "not pasteurized" and/or "live culture". It will probably include a warning to those not used to raw vinegar. I've purchased a couple different brands of raw apple cider, and one of raw red wine vinegar.

Where I live in New York State, it's almost impossible to find a pineapple that was picked fully ripe - they don't ship as well if they're ripe. I usually get a weird feeling in my mouth if I eat too much. My strategy is to eat fewer pineapples, and not to try to eat an entire pineapple in one day.

People can do very well on diets including only a small amount of greens. If you aren't enjoying them right now, then your body is probably telling you that you should concentrate on eating lots of fruits right now. If you enjoy salads and only a few other greens, then that's enough for now. Your tastes may change over time, which I would interpret as an indication that your body's needs have cha

A juicer isn't necessary, though some people swear by them. You might try buying some nice fresh juice if there's anywhere near you where you can do that. Drink some juice once in a while, and see if it does more for you than the smoothies. If it's that amazing, you might want to consider investing in a juicer. Otherwise, you can probably put it off for a while, or forever. Raw foodists don't fol

I agree. Smoothie thickness is a matter of taste, but I think most people feel the need to add some liquid, depending on the water content of what is already going into the smoothie. Water is a good option, or coconut water, or juice. Instead of adding oranges, I sometimes manually juice them and add just the juice. I've never been able to tolerate much of the bitter orange rind, and this method

I love raw corn when it's in season. Corn is always best fresh, but when you're eating it raw this is even more important.

Vitamineral Green is a good product. You can see an interview with the owner of the company here. I don't think that any dried product can or should replace fresh greens in your diet, if you want more greens than you can get fresh then a scoop of Vitamineral Green now and then may be the right thing for you. For myself, lately I'm craving huge quantities of greens, and I'm willing to go to the

Hi dhsredhead, I was only trying to point out that high speed blenders cannot be made with glass containers, which I felt was an important point because many people assume that it is due to the manufacturer's failure to understand concerns about plastics that no glass carafes are offered for sale. Given these restrictions, we each have to decide whether we're willing to sacrifice glass in favo

As I understand it, the high speed blenders are never made with glass containers because of the risk that at high speeds the inside of the container may be chipped. Since swallowing glass shards can kill, I'm on board with this decision. The decision you need to make is which feature is more important to you, a huge motor, or a glass jar.

I really enjoy parsley in smoothies. Tamukha's explanation sounds reasonable to me. If you're adding tons of fiber you may need more water to keep it "sippable". Fruit contains more water than greens, so if you're using a lot of fruit you may have less need for added liquid, but I usually add some anyway.

Yeah, tahini. Good thought. You could make a garlic-tahini, or a tahini-ginger dressing. That would be yummy on a green salad made with 1-day sprouted lentils, carrots, and cucumber chunks. A dressing made with turmeric could be very pretty. Ooh... how about a creamy orange-colored lime turmeric dressing, and a light sprinkle of whole black sesame seeds over that? That could made a gorgeous pr

I'll have to look up the recipe I used when I'm home, but I know it was a blended recipe that I don't think contained any nuts or seeds. I remember being impressed by how it came out, but it probably isn't the recipe you'd want if you just wanted a serving of yogurt. Designed after a yogurt-based sauce, this was thinner, and garlicky.

Green salads aren't a traditional Indian dish, but you can certainly make a salad with an Indian theme. I sometimes make this curry-flavored salad dressing which is based on one from Ani Phyo. Creamy Curry Dressing 1 tbsp. curry powder 3 red apples, cored and diced 1 clove garlic 1 tbsp. ginger 3 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil juice of 1 lemon 1/2 tsp sea salt Combine all ingredient

Hmm... well, anything will kill you in excess, including oxygen. We're designed to be creatures of moderation. If you're looking for the most "raw" alcohol, I would suggest dry wine. Most beers are actually pasteurized these days and then artificially carbonated, as this increases the shelf life. Distilled liquor is obviously quite dead. As wine ferments, sugars are used up, so the

I've been enjoying green juices a lot lately. Yesterday my dad gave me about a bushel of lettuce, because he's thinning the beds on his farm and had more than he and my mom could eat. I had the brilliant idea that though I couldn't eat that much salad before it all goes bad, I could try using the lettuce for juice. This morning I made some lettuce juice, then added some fruits to sweeten it up.

Do you have good light? It sounds like you might when you say you're in a loft. With good light you can grow almost anything. All kind of herbs are good. People grow tomatoes in pots. I recommend cherry tomatoes over full size for home growers. The reason is that farmers charge more for the cherries because they're more work to pick, but if birds and animals get at them they'll eat some of th

I didn't notice any emotional detox early on, but I've had a few episodes unstable feelings which have generally led to a greater understanding and acceptance. Recently, I started to include more greens and more juice in my diet, which I think has led to an accelerated detox. I've been finding myself a lot more vulnerable to stress in the last few weeks. (Of course, since my parents moved in w

Traditionally, blenders work best with a liquid base, and that's still true, but some of the high-end blenders will work reasonably well at pulverizing drier foods. If you want to turn a yellow onion into paste, then you could probably do that with a powerful blender. If you want to chop the onion, then it's a no-go. Some of the onion will be reduced to paste while other pieces are still the same

Wendy, Do you feel that your blood sugar dropped on the Atkins diet because of the animal fat vs plant fat dynamic? I would have assumed that it was the extreme low carbohydrates that did it. If all the sugar you have in your system are the sugars your body converts from fat itself, then that may have put a stressful but effective cap on your sugar levels.
